Astronomy is often described as a visual science, but a purely visual approach to communicate it leaves out a significant part of the population. In this ESO blog post we talked with two experts to learn how we can do better with tactile activities. www.eso.org/public/blog/... 🔭 🧪

An astonishing headline reporting on new observations from a team led to Nikku Madhusudhan claims they’ve found ‘hints of life’ on a planet orbiting a dwarf star some 124 light years away. What’s going on? (1/n) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... 🔭 🧪

An important point. I’m sure there are a lot of ways scientists and science communicators can do better, but as long as organized and funded political disinformation campaigns are rampant and unconstrained, we’re fighting a real uphill battle.

What a fun week! 🚲

So my Dad has been in touch with me twice this week… He does this through the modern medium of email (🤷‍♂️). First email subject line - “Venus”. 🔭 Couple of days later, it’s followed by a second email with a subject line of simply “Pies”. 🥧 Gotta hand it to him, he knows how to get my attention.

Thanks to the team at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh’s Science Centre & Planetarium, you can catch a small glimpse of Euclid’s beautiful new #Q1DataRelease images in their seasonal “What’s Up?” stargazing planetarium show this week! 🤩

Are you ready for it…? Make room in your calendar for 19th March at 11:00, when stunning results with contributions from UK scientists will be revealed. 🚨 🗓️ #Euclid #Q1Release #Astronomy #Cosmology

Little smiles: @esa.int just introduced rock legend Dr Brian May as "Astrophysicist and stereoscopic imager"- no mention of his celebrity past 😂. Now how to get my hands on a stereoscope so I can see these fab images of Mars' moon Deimos, over the surface of Mars, in its full 3D glory!! 🤔🔭

Just in! 📸 The first images from yesterday’s #HeraMission flyby of Mars and its moon Deimos. 👇 www.esa.int/Space_Safety...

Important story about what we’re doing to the upper atmosphere as Musk’s satellites rain into it www.sciencenews.org/article/sate...

We're looking for a physics engagement officer here in Oxford - lots of delivery, part of a great team and working mostly with local 11-15 year olds. It's a half time position, and suits flexible working. Details below, or ask if you have any questions: my.corehr.com/pls/uoxrecru...

Full marks to fellow cosmologist George Efstathiou 'removing Musk's fellowship could be seen as political interference...But Prof Efstathiou said "If somebody has a disregard for the truth and says things that are blatantly false, then that speaks to their ethical standards. That's not political"'

Mars climate scientist here. The oceans won't just return. We don't have a good explanation for how Mars had oceans when it did have a thick atmosphere in the paleo record billions of years ago. Everything in the last few months should prove that Musk is an idiot and knows nothing about anything.

How’s this for a Monday morning? 🤩 A team of #HumansOfEuclid discovered an Einstein ring 💍 in nearby galaxy, NGC 6505. Only possible with the unique capabilities of this wonderful telescope!

Swapping Edinburgh for Liverpool today this #NationalAstronomyWeek. Not so much of a #planetaryparade this time of day…but maybe a potential title parade coming this May! #YNWA #LFC 😉 🔴

Coming Monday, 10 February, #ESAEuclid will present a new science result. Something... special nearby galaxy something... 😀 #ESA press release is being finalized, consortium blog post written, paper will be in A&A. It will be cool, beautiful, amazing. 🤩 #astronomy #galaxies #space #EuclidLeaks

Last Wed @astronomyedinburgh.bsky.social organised some impromptu "sidewalk astronomy" on Portobello's Promenade. Here's me getting ultra excited about seeing the stripes on Jupiter through the 10” Dob 🤩 I took along our new #Seestar S30 who was promptly named "Telly" by 9yo local Evelyn! 🔭

Are you ready to chase the Moon? 🌖 #NationalAstronomyWeek begins tomorrow, 1st February! You can find out more about how to get involved and an exciting line-up of events across the UK at astronomyweek.org.uk. However, whilst us Earthlings gaze up at the Moon, Euclid won't be joining us... (1/4)

If you've got clear skies, it's a #DoLookUp moment. Crescent moon, #Saturn and #Venus all in a lovely line to the West! #astrophotography 🧪🔭

Back at Dynamic Earth today for the UK premiere of Voyager: A Never Ending Journey. You can catch it in their planetarium throughout February half-term. Top tip: stay for the end credit scene! 👽 📡 📀 #Voyager 1’s perspective of our Pale Blue Dot is perhaps now more poignant than ever. 🌍

Who says you can’t stargaze while waiting to escape the incoming apocalypse? 💨 #PlanetaryParade #StormÉowyn #Astronomy #Edinburgh

Want to witness the beauty of half the planets in our solar system? Why not take part in National Astronomy Week! 🪐💫🔭 Running from 1-9 February, it will feature 250 events across the UK, including stargazing nights, planetarium shows & schoolchildren quizzing astronauts 👩‍🚀 ⤵️

WOW! You've got to watch all of this. A priest just confronted Trump's fascism to his face. She's so incredibly brave.

Weird that we have to say this, but the government doesn’t get to decide what gender a person is.

#PlanetaryParade excitement is fantastic! #DoLookUp But I'm baffled by the media saying 25th Jan is a "once in a lifetime event" 🔭🧪 The awesome foursome Mars, Jupiter, Venus & Saturn have been on display for weeks + Neptune & Uranus if you have a telescope. We won't see Mercury until late Feb🤔 🧵1/6

Download a 'Chase the Moon' printable skyguide to track the Moon across the sky from 1-9 Feb during National Astronomy Week. We'll show you how to use the Moon's position to find a treasure trove of interesting objects in the sky 🤩https://astronomyweek.org.uk/resources/

Back to work means being distracted by the views from Blackford Hill again…with very snowy Pentland hills this morning! #Edinburgh

What a start to 2025! By coincidence, @notverymedieval.bsky.social was driving us to the Borders tonight. We saw the red alert. As I looked out the car window I could see the silhouetted clouds amongst a glowing white sky. We soon parked up at the roadside and got VERY lucky! #aurora #snow 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Happy new year! 🥳 On 1st January 1925, Edwin Hubble presented a finding that would forever change our view of the Universe - that there are other galaxies beyond our Milky Way! 100 years later, Euclid is mapping many billions of galaxies. Who knows what we’ll discover together in 2025…?

Aaaaaannd that’s a wrap on #EuclidUK2024! 🎬 After two days of fantastic talks, UK-based Euclid scientists are on their way home… 🏡 (1/4)

Venus over the Higgs Centre, Royal Observatory Edinburgh #astronomy

It’s Day 2 of #EuclidUK2024 at @royalastrosoc.bsky.social ! Astronomy is all about collaboration, and the coffee breaks are perfect for catching up and meeting new people ☕️

Today is Day 1 of #EuclidUK2024, where scientists from across the UK are meeting to share their latest updates about the pioneering Euclid Space Telescope! Thanks to the @royalastrosoc.bsky.social for hosting - a beautiful venue 😍

Always a pleasure to see my old stomping ground, Dynamic Earth Science Centre & Planetarium, on the way to the Observatory. Looking particularly beautiful against the silhouetted Salisbury Crags this morning! 😍

1% of the Euclid mission's map of the night sky just dropped... and it's 208 BILLION pixels & 14m galaxies!!! 🤯 😱 🔭 🔬 Never before has such a large map of the night sky been made at this resolution. Image 1 features blue cirrus clouds between stars in the Milky Way. Image 2 is a 600 TIMES zoom!

As I settle into my new role at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, I’m struggling to take my eyes off this view each morning as I reach Blackford Hill. Stunning! 😍

Just off BBC Radio Scotland, talking about 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿ScotRail's decision to sign up to Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet for all their Highland trains. I think I rather upset presenter Kaye Adams with this story of space junk falling from the sky...😬🔭 ℹ️: www.scientificamerican.com/article/spac...

Attention any aliens.

Had a great time at BAP2024, and had a lot of interest and support for the 100 Hours project 🤩 Coming to 100hours.online in just TEN DAYS TIME, on 2 October 🤯
