I write a bunch of code (mainly Python), have cats, tinker with and detail cars, and fiddle with FreeBSD. I like making photos. Playing with Internet […] [bridged from https://mastodon.jamesoff.net/@jamesoff on the fediverse by https://fed.brid.gy/ ]

Oh it finished building in time before I had to go out #OpenBSD #RunBSD

Here’s a meta-fastfetch #OpenBSD #RunBSD

Like all good OS installs, this is done over serial #OpenBSD

It begins #OpenBSD #RunBSD

Someone is rather put out that his space on my desk is occupied by old tech

Well I haven’t found my serial adaptor stuff nor a USB to PS/2 dongle (which I’m hoping will work for a keyboard) but I have found a Quantum Bigfoot! 12GB! This was my data drive in the machine I took to university :o

Found my VGA cable but yeah, I also need to find a keyboard or a serial dongle :)

It's powered up without any sad hard drive crunching noises or anything through, but doesn't seem to be booting (literally just power and network plugged in right now)

I found my Sun mouse but not keyboard, which may also hinder progress. Was wondering about getting on the serial port and realised in rummaging through boxes I've not come across my USB/serial dongle, so I wonder if my VGA cable is with that somewhere

The Ultra5 has VGA, but I can't find a VGA cable :( I'm sure I'd have kept one...

@lapcatsoftware hello :) thanks for StopTheMadness (Pro)! I mainly use LibreWolf and it works fine there, until I need to upgrade the extension, when I end up having to have the desktop app launch Firefox so I can copy the "install page" path and then load it in LibreWolf. I've "fixed" it by […]

I have a spare RPi 2 (model B v1.1) and 3 (B v1.2)... think I'll try #OpenBSD and #NetBSD on them to tinker with. Last time I tried OpenBSD was on my Ultra 5 back in, um, probably ~2008 (I should boot it and see what version is on it, if I can find suitable cables). It looks like NetBSD runs on […]

Set up a TamperMonkey script to s/AI/Word Soup/ which is really improving a lot of websites

Types of codebases my customers send me: - Enterprise javabean factory factory... on a SIM card - C# programmer retasked to write an authenticated bootloader in C for an arm platform with no training - Beautiful well-written, easy-to-read C by an experienced systems programmer, with one […]

Always impressed with how a little battery like this can (with a bunch of capacitors or something, in the dongle) jump start a car

I have completed my long-overdue Sights and Sounds video on Aztec youtu.be/IrZCYj2ZHj8 These videos are intended to help non-sighted folks have a better understanding of what the devices I feature are like, which is quite a task for pinball! And there a clean audio recordings of the machine itself

I've written a blog post about how Amazon S3 security demonstrates limitations of LLMs in cloud security. This mastodon post acts as an anchor for comments on the blog post. The gist of it is this: Amazon S3 has encrypted objects at rest automatically, by default since January 2023. Not only is […]

Ugh need to work out if these jockey wheels are compatible with both my derailleur and my football league

“I’m sorry, Ms. Delacourt, but your son has tested positive for Linux.” “Give it to me straight, Doc. How bad is it?” “It’s terminal.” [anguished cry]

Passed my 7 year anniversary at AWS this week. 2/5 of the way to my next tenure-based badge colour!

What the f is this abomination of layout? Images that fade in as you scroll are bad enough but… wat?

1. Go to office 2. Take photo of office 3. Use photo as background on work call 4. Appear as if in office! 5. Cat jumps on desk and ruins the effect

Ordered a Very Long Brush (well, Normal Length Brush with a Very Long Handle) to clean the solar panels

Tuesday 22nd April was the last day we drew meaningful energy from the grid*, since then we've been entirely self-sufficient with solar and batteries! [* Our inverter pulls ~40W all the time except when exporting, for things like making sure it's in sync] #solar #HomeAssistant

Two types of cat for #caturday

Corrado steering column switchgear successfully reassembled, and the hazard switch now works properly (which was the reason for taking it apart in the first place). Plus the nut holding it on is torqued to spec now, which based on how easily I could undo it, it wasn’t before…

Corrado progress: brittle plastic strikes again, now waiting for epoxy to cure before I can continue reassembly (not my fault, someone getting in there before me damaged a screw mount and it wouldn't withstand another use)

The Corrado’s steering column surround has this weird flap which can lift up on the top. It’s got a little felt piece underneath to stop it rattling, but I’ve no idea what it’s for. Maybe something to do with the adjustable steering column (and the gap […] [Original post on mastodon.jamesoff.net]
