With generous support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Spencer Foundation, we are pleased to be offering the Just Education Policy Institute for doctoral students interested in research to reduce racial inequality in education policy this fall. Applications are open, due June 30.

This is great reporting about terrible things. Just look at the research the Trump administration wants to kill.

I wonder if legacy admissions has come up in the Trump-Harvard negotiations even once. Or athletic preferences? Or the fact that almost a tenth of the freshman class comes from 21 high schools? This is about merit, right?

Madness

Austria announced new proposals on private gun ownership, including raising the minimum age to 25 from 21 and strengthening the mandatory psychological test that must be passed to buy one, eight days after the deadliest school shooting in Austria’s history. https://trib.al/bYj01gp

Habermas is 96 today, and that is because Habermas is still alive.

I was genuinely surprised by what I found here. For all the talk of opportunity hoarding, a lot of ranked colleges have in fact expanded enrollment in the past two decades.

Democrats on Maine's budget committee voted to end the state's three-year run of tuition-free community college for recent high school graduates. It's an early sign that state financial aid programs are at risk during an economic slowdown and uncertainty from Washington.

It's pretty much a myth that highly ranked colleges haven't increased enrollment over the past 20 years.

I revised this piece about the endowment tax to reflect the Senate proposal, which includes --new, lower tax rates for the wealthiest universities --an exemption for Hillsdale --the House exemption for religious schools, which will take Notre Dame off the list. bit.ly/4iTjiT6

Finance reconcillation plan is out. Here's a rundown of what's happening with the endowment tax: 1. Only 3 rates and they're significantly lower than what the House wanted: $500K-750K per FTE: 1.4% $750K-$2M : 4% >$2M: 8%. 🧵

OPINION: The inability to measure and publish data on college outcomes weakens the ability of the U.S. to maintain its global position as a leader in higher education: hechingerreport.org/opinion-clam... via @mitzkow.bsky.social

Fairly silly to use wages paid to federal workers in this calculation (that's why MD and VA are near the top of recipients).

I did not edit this, this is the actual parade with the actual music being played. CINEMATIC

Do you know how badly you have to screw up as a Republican to get this kind of turnout in IDAHO? #NOKINGS

“I’ve never seen anything that simultaneously really goes after poor people and then really helps rich people,” said Chuck Marr, the vice president for federal tax policy at the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

For all their talk of merit, the President and his allies seem to think that universities should be using quotas to hold spots for Americans. That’s no way to maintain our status as the world leader in research and innovation.
