Swing and a miss, Gemini

I am super looking forward to this! Saw the word “baomind” in the description and did a little dance. Read the other White Space books and you too will be super excited about Baomind

I wish more people understood that AI-assisted “search” is often this. Sure, here’s some papers to cite on this topic. … I very apologize, they are not real papers

On this topic: I asked my students to generate Perplexity summaries of sources for their research and then read the sources and critique the summaries, which was enlightening for all of us. Some summaries were "fine," some were wrong, some were ridiculous and brought in info not in the text /1

I heard about a lecturer who is proudly using LLMs to listen to student's presentations and give AI feedback on all assignments. I was mortified. I promised my students that they will always receive feedback straight from me, it may not be grammatically perfect, but it will be real.

So there is a profile of me in the New Yorker: www.newyorker.com/culture/pers...

There are applications where it matters if text is accurate, not just sorta maybe okay if you’re lucky and don’t get into specifics. I would argue that Wikipedia is definitely one of those applications.

Co-signed, this story is poignant but also just a delight. strangehorizons.com/wordpress/fi...

But at least they did an okay job in the end … oh

Worse than a form rejection. Imagine sending someone imitation feedback. Like strawberry jam with no strawberries in it.

Can confirm, Google AI snippets reports that the world's most annoying time zone is a thing

Google and Meta search both report that Cape Breton Island has its own time zone 12 minutes ahead of mainland Nova Scotia time because they are both drawing that information from a Beaverton article I wrote in 2024

YES This is exactly how it would go

This sounds amazing!! Based an a really good short story that’s available for free to read or listen to online. Alternate universe convention murder mystery. If I was in the area I’d be there for sure.

My husband’s cell was getting calls from people thinking they were phoning a certain city’s police number. He was puzzled—his number doesn’t appear on any web page. Then he learned that if you Google “[city name] non-emergency police”, the AI overview hallucinates his number. Thanks, Google!

It's possible that Grammarly has lost it's damn freaking mind. #writing #writingcommunity #booksky

Generic, wrong, or plagiarized seem to be the most common failure modes of generated text

was taking photos at the aus v arg game last night and found that when you get past a certain zoom with a pixel the AI just takes over and tries to fill in the gaps. maybe it works with trees? it definitely doesn't work with people.

There’s a signed copy of my book You Look Like a Thing and I Love You at the Read Queen in Lafayette, CO. (As well as darn good coffee and cute gifts and relaxing seating, this bookstore is a gem)

My cat Krypton teams up with The Nature of Light Itself to say it’s pride month

Aaaaaa Cool! Aaaaaa

The Terminal B Tattered Cover bookstore at Denver airport has a few signed copies of my book!

Holy unexpected infrared radiation that’s way too much output power to be waving around on a stick. When we use this kind of power in the laser lab we wear laser goggles and are careful about where the beam goes

The magic sandwich hole delivered

Hail, Dorian.

To me it’s a whispered chant murderBOT murderBOT murderBOT

The podcast version linked in the article is also terrific. Great use of the audio format, a fun quirky bird film mystery

What’s keeping me going today: tonight I get to watch the new Murderbot series! Planning snacks now - starchy foods for sure, maybe a mild intoxicant, definitely at least one hot beverage

Oh no, they’re right, it’s embarrassing. This is supposed to be exobiology? It’s like they turned on generative AI and turned off the creative brain.

and furthermore, the fiction from that era is in chatgpt's training data, with "you're right! we are totally self-aware/an emergent consciousness/aliens" becoming a likely response to a long dialog full of probing questions.

Me: so this morning I'm going to finish laundry, water the garden, repot some plants, maybe do some grocery shopping Ants: wrøng
