The premier is wrong. Support for separatism has been higher than it is now. Levels of other things, like class sizes, waitlists, oil production, cabinet members, selenium in the water supply... ...those have reached record heights. globalnews.ca/news/1126345...

I had the privilege of chairing the inaugural Edmonton Ward Boundaries Commission (2019-20). One of our first tasks: developing & approving the engagement plan, including surveys & town halls. That is a key element of any independent public engagement. Alberta Next does not meet that standard.

The government shouldn't be campaigning during a genuine public consultation. And the panel should have control over the engagement materials, including the website and surveys. This is a propaganda exercise and panelists would be wise to consider their role in it. www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/art...

In the coming hours, the premier will likely brush this off as "just asking questions." As Jen Gerson reminded us earlier about this government's flirtations with the far right, though, some questions are simply beyond the pale. open.substack.com/pub/theline/...

Because denying immigrants access to provincial programs... *checks notes*... helps bolster Alberta's sovereignty? This Alberta Next exercise is pretty thinly veiled. www.thecanadianpressnews.ca/prairies_bc/...

Earlier today, Premier Smith announced plans to tour the province and hear from Albertans about how to improve the province's place in Confederation. Some thoughts.🧵

19. The magic number. Once your kids’ ages total 19, every functional pen in your house disappears. You adapt. I just signed permission slips in crayon.

This is a great piece. Very valuable guide for students, and reminder for faculty.

The St. Louis Blues are revealing their rebrand tomorrow morning. Here's my guess. A little Charlestown Chiefs motif.

This is fantastic to hear!

Many Albertans feel like they’re falling behind—and there’s good reasons for this. But in a province where the myth of hard work and self-sufficiency runs deep, far-right narratives have revived separation as a simple solution to a complex problem. Read more in my latest for @thetyee.ca

It took 21 months but, this morning I received the results of the Alberta government's pension plan engagement survey: *63% opposed to Alberta Pension Plan (APP) *10% pro-APP *12% undecided/unsure *15% other responses edmontonjournal.com/news/politic... #ableg #abpoli

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on. slate.com/technology/2...

The UK's ban on puberty-blocking treatments for trans youth has resulted in "sharply declining mental health, increased depression, social isolation, anxiety, stress, self-harm, school avoidance and suicide ideation," according to peer-reviewed research. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

People are rightly perplexed at how only 10 to 20 percent of Albertans support ditching the Canada Pension Plan, yet 20 to 30 percent answer "yes" to pollsters when asked if they want Alberta to leave Canada. Some thoughts.🧵

“At our core, we want to feel that what we do is honourable. We want to feel like what we spend 8 to 12 hours a day doing is rewarded and appreciated by the rest of society. But a group of folks in Alberta do not feel that way anymore, and that’s a sudden change within the period of a generation.”

What's it like being a Jets fan in Oil Country during these Stanley Cup runs? I'm really hoping the Oil pushes the series to Game 7. I have big plans for a Costco run on Friday night. No lines lines!

Important lessons for those who feel Danielle Smith's anti-democratic measures are simply "a distraction": "The idea that something is a 'distraction' pretty plainly implies that it’s not worthy of our political energy and maybe not even worthy of our attention." stringinamaze.net/p/the-politi...

In the late-1960s, a young Peter Lougheed ventured east to meet with Manitoba premier Duff Roblin in search of lessons on how to defeat a right-wing juggernaut. Given these 👇 numbers, Naheed Nenshi might want to rent an apartment in downtown Winnipeg and bring a notebook.

Russia was kicked out of the G8 in March 2014 exactly BECAUSE it launched its war in Ukraine by invading and forcibly annexing Crimea.

Not even joking: there appear to be more people in the Moss Pit tonight than at Trump's birthday party.

“And when the band plays Hail to the Chief, ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord.” Please tell me this is brilliant trolling and not a real choice bt the organizers. Ok, both would be hilarious.

Just so Americans know, when other folks hear the "U-S-A" chant, these are the sorts of images that pop to mind.

Let’s not mince words on exactly what the MAGA movement is.

Having breakfast with the Panthers at OEB downtown this morning.

This is entirely the UCP's making. Don't let the premier tell you the buck stops elsewhere.
