Realizing how much of the project's history was on Twitter before The Troubles started, today on the blog, I offer a brief history of the Ignyte Awards, winner of the 2025 Locus Special Award. www.ldlewiswrites.com/news-updates/blr1cll6k240urnbkg9dmjrmg8iyqq

Retired Lawyer asks: when did "EXCEEDINGLY transformative" become a criterion for fair use? Does it require a BIG BEAUTIFUL transformation? (And I snark in full recognition of Judge Alsup's generally admirable record, particularly w/r/t some of his DOGE rulings.)

Despite the headline, mixed ruling by a Federal judge in the Anthropic AI lawsuit. Judge ruled using books to train the company's AI didn't violate copyright laws bc it fell under fair use by being "exceedingly transformative." I disagree with this interpretation. 1/ www.reuters.com/legal/litiga...

I often think of the time one of my books got review-bombed on Goodreads because a podcast sent their fans after me. Hundreds upon hundreds of one-star reviews, many explicitly saying "(podcast) sent me," and GR's response was "We have not detected any sign of rule violations."

Same thing happened to me with the release of my first novel Plague Birds and is happening again with We Who Hunt Alexanders, which will be published next month. Both times this review bombing was due to political attacks aimed at me as a person.

I'm attending the Celsius 232 festival in Spain next month. My novel Plague Birds was also recently translated and published in Spain by Dolmen Editorial so I'll also be doing a few book signing around the country. 1/2 dolmeneditorial.com/tienda/aves-...

Controversial opinion: Editors/agents/studios do not have to read your whole story/script to know they don't want it. You want your thing read. But *they* want to be blown away. It does not take that long to know you aren't blown away. (My goal in writing is to FORCE people to keep reading. 😈)

I didn’t know this was controversial. Even if reading every submission beginning to end was feasible—without ballooning response times on every one to several months, at least—it wouldn’t be useful. You can tell within a few pages, paragraphs, sometimes even sentences if a story is working for you.

AAAAAAAARGH

You definitely should! Then they can find put if they're one of the Alexanders who should be worried.

My gothic dark fantasy We Who Hunt Alexanders will be released next month. The novella focuses on a neurodivergent monster dealing with both her mom's wrong expectations for her life and religious extremists hunting them down. Preorder now! 1/2 www.apexbookcompany.com/products/we-...

*taps mic* Hi, there! I’ve lived all over the country, wet, dry, hot, cold, and high humidity will not only kill your ass dead faster than anything else, it will suuuuuck the entire time you’re dying. Your low resting heart rate won’t do shit when your sweat is a marinade instead of a coolant.

As a multi-award nominated Editor of Fantasy Magazine aka @fantasymagazine.bsky.social AND as a literary agent, not to mention the other things I do in genre, including working at Locus Magazine... I really want you to know: Rejection DOES NOT MEAN you are a bad writer. Keep Going! You got this!

Hooray! My frothy sapphic fantasy rom-com story "Five Reasons Why I Am Not in Love with my Nemesis" is out today in Worlds of Possibility, along with lots of other great stories by authors including @swantower.bsky.social, @cornellwriter.bsky.social, & more. www.juliarios.com/introducing-...

This whole piece is a delight to read. We need so many more disabled voices in our storytelling world. But it brings me special pride seeing @tinywriterlaura.bsky.social's THE AWAKENED featured there. Laura has worked so long for this, and she's a star!

We may be entering “settlement watch” territory in one of the fastest-moving AI cases, Bartz v. Anthropic. What happens if the AI copyright class action lawsuits settle, and why care about settlement? More on why authors should be watching closely below: www.authorsalliance.org/2025/06/20/w...

"I only use AI to generate ideas." Why? You're carrying around the greatest idea-generator in the history of the world right between your ears. All you have to do is oxygenate it, feed it, and prime it. It's ready to adapt to whatever use you decide is important to you.

So uh, guess who forgot to talk about having a story come out? I wrote "Ripped At The Seams" which consists of trans people being forced to return from the dead and trying to not completely tear someone's face off. wolfpaper.itch.io/meat4meat

My first GenAI Grapevine column is out and examines if generative AI will change how people think and experience the world, a look at the manipulative language used to promote AI, if James Frey's the new posterboy for writers using AI, plus other news and info. www.patreon.com/posts/131375...

this New Yorker profile of Martha Wells is very good and also contains the following sequence of words: "Wells recently completed the eighth [Murderbot book], 'Platform Decay.'" YAY.

"Stories and art change the way people think and experience the world around them. That ability is something the rich and powerful have long coveted and attempted to use for themselves." Amazing article, as usual. Highly recommend you subscribe if you haven't already.

This is an extremely good overview both of what's happening in the conflict between AI companies and artists, and how we might think about that conflict.

Sue Ann Carwell was an early Prince protegée. He found her in 1978 and decided he was going to make her a star. But by then, this teenage girl had already been at the heart of the Minneapolis music scene for years. I asked her about the origins of Minneapolis funk: buttondown.com/charliejane/...
