Donald Trump has long-espoused eugenicist and ableist beliefs. For @motherjones.com, I put together a timeline of some of these greatest (or worst) hits, which shows a pattern, starting back in the 1980s. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

This is the first media coverage that I have seen of the UNC board's quiet decision to largely pause granting tenure outside of the health sciences. This is worth watching over the coming weeks.

Fellow faculty: Esther WIlder (CUNY) is organizing a letter to Congress protesting NSF cuts and asking for their support. Please consider signing (with signature and affiliation) and circulating to others who might be interested. #SaveNSF docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Kubovich also reports that the Israeli military believes that Hamas remains operational with some 40,000 fighters under its command, so things are clearly going well.

Haaretz’s Yaniv Kubovich reports that Israel plans to seize 75% of Gaza and relocate more than 1,3 million Palestinians in the upcoming offensive, ultimately forcing the entire population into three military zones with food supplies strictly controlled by GHF/Israel. www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...

George Floyd was murdered by police five years ago today. The Say Their Names cemetery in Minneapolis features memorials for Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Amadou Diallo, Oscar Grant, Korryn Gaines, Freddie Gray and far too many more Black people who died at the hands of police.

We knew this already. This outcome is a reminder that preserving police power in the US is a decades-long bipartisan project and the only way out of this is to dismantle this project. It's going to take a long time due to how entrenched police power has been in US politics and culture

tl;dr — this EO co-opts the language of open science to implement a system of political control wherein presidential appointees are given broad latitude to designate any number of reasonable scientific activities and inferences as scientific misconduct, and to penalize those involved accordingly.

New: A man who spent months in a Kansas City jail waiting to be transferred to a state psychiatric hospital for court-ordered treatment died on Monday. missouriindependent.com/2025/05/23/m... @missouriindependent.com

This is extremely significant. Former 🇮🇱 Prime Minister Ehud Olmert (2006-9) wrote in a May 22 Haaretz op-ed that Israel is: 🔴 intentionally waging a war of annihilation 🔴 premeditatedly adopting a policy of starvation 🔴 massacring civilians 🔴 making declarations of genocide A thread:

Alabama hires bespoke law firm to defend its prison system; firm uses ai and cites cases which don’t exist.

New article based on data from my organization Mapping Police Violence shows police killings have surged in Red states. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/24/u...

In 1229, some students at the University of Paris were beaten up by a local shopkeeper and some of his friends (over a disputed bar tab apparently). Students returned the next day and beat up the shopkeeper. In response, the monarchy sent in mercenaries...

Fascism is really exhausting.

NEW Bloomberg has put together a story that offers a comprehensive look at all the various ways the Trump family is making money during his second term. Gift Link:

I'm so distracted/distraught by all that's going on that I totally forgot I had a long conversation w/ the reporter who wrote this story a couple of weeks ago. As national politics get ever more chaotic, it's so important to remember how much stuff--both good and bad--happens at the local level.

Jails are some of the deadliest facilities in the U.S., and they continue to operate as black holes with very little oversight from the counties and sheriffs that run them prismreports.org/2025/05/22/j...

Colossal scientist now admits they haven’t really made dire wolves. the company's chief scientist now concedes that the animals are merely modified grey wolves www.newscientist.com/article/2481...

Just unbelievably sad and senseless--an act that serves no purpose whatsoever and makes and already awful situation even worse. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Race animates a lot of ICE/CBP, but I can't stress enough how—as with all law enforcement—a key factor is sheer *laziness*. They're not tracking down drug gangs, they're going for the easiest targets they can find. Official hearings (citizenship, court, etc) are fish in a barrel to run numbers up.

This is absolutely terrible news. With the shifting regulatory climate (i.e., antivax ratfuckery), Moderna has withdrawn their application for their eagerly anticipated COVID-flu combo vaccine. This vaccine offered better protection than getting each shot separately. h/t @merz.bsky.social

"'My world ended on July 18, 2013,' says Tawanda Jones, of the night that police officers killed her brother near Morgan State University." "Finally, after nearly 12 years, the independent audit [.] ruled [.] the death should have been ruled a homicide." #Maryland #USA #Policing

Football always makes me feel better for a few minutes!! Another fun game!

Some of y’all noticed I’ve been uncharacteristically offline. This is why, and I remain on leave for a few weeks to handle a PTSD relapse. CJR was dogged in its pursuit of my story. Because of what I do and who I am, I felt that I had to answer their questions honestly. www.cjr.org/feature-2/we...

NEW RESULT: Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner, one of the best-known 'reform DAs' in the nation, has won today's Democratic primary as he runs for reelection. Krasner is now overwhelmingly favored to win a third term in November in this very-heavily blue city.

RESULT: Philadelphia voters have overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure to bolster oversight over city jails. There's a human rights crisis in these lockups, and the measure creates a new board with powers to investigate. Bolts reported on this race here: boltsmag.org/philadelphia...

I wrote about this in March: the new playbook is to ignore a scandal until it goes away, no matter how egregious. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Not sure how accurate this analysis is, but I still found it to be a fascinating read… www.nytimes.com/2025/05/19/m...

1. This is just the first of many arrests of Democrats to come 2. It will have a chilling effect on the party, in that 95% of Dems will see this, determine it's not worth going to jail and roll over 3. The remaining 5% need to prepare for the type of politics we don't normally see here

"Nobody wants to be in law enforcement. It’s dying," one Missouri sheriff told @themarshallproject.org. Now, he thinks, ICE contracts could be what saves it... Such a well-written story: www.themarshallproject.org/2025/05/19/i...

Pittsburgh—unlike many other US cities—provides homeless people "credible offers" for long-term housing before sweeping encampments, rather than kicking people out & placing them in emergency shelters, which are often dangerous & inadequate. It's an interesting program other cities might consider:
