OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

Yup.

RFK Jr’s Department of Health and Human Services has notified Moderna that it is canceling a nearly $600 million contract with the company to develop, test, and license vaccines for flu strains that could trigger future pandemics, including the dangerous H5N1 bird flu virus.

New May demand record in ERCOT with over 79,000 megawatts today. Huge forecast miss as ERCOT expected <75,000. Solar and wind met 50% of that demand throughout the day. No conservation calls, no drama. All resources contribute to grid reliability. #energysky 🔌☀️💨

Somebody get Bill Kristol, Jen Rubin, and their crews to back an invasion to bring democracy and freedom to Texas. 🪖

This is what an authoritarian regime would do. Hidden deep in Trump’s 1,100-page bill that passed the House today is a provision that would block federal courts from enforcing contempt charges against government officials who violate court orders.

This bill would limit coverage of gender-affirming care as an essential benefit under Affordable Care Act plans and prohibit Medicaid & CHIP from covering the treatment. Earlier drafts limited this prohibition to care for minors; the approved bill extends it to care for all ages.

I wish journalists would stop framing political news as wins or losses for politicians or political parties. It’s an abrogation of our mission. Why do we keep doing this? Is the spending bill a win or loss for the American people? Who does it help? Who does it hurt? Is it sound policy? Fiscally?

BREAKING: By an evenly divided vote, the Supreme Court affirms an Oklahoma Supreme Court decision blocking the creation of a Catholic charter school. Barrett recused, allowing for the deadlock. We don't know which conservative joined the liberals. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

After a two-and-a-half-hour debate Wednesday night that started as an effort to regulate hemp-based products containing THC, the Texas House gave its initial approval to a complete ban on such products.

Yes. Theft, larceny, robbery, a shakedown, pockets picked, purses snatched, wallets lifted, accounts pilfered, assets liquidated. A massive wealth transfer from the most vulnerable to the wealthiest.

No one experiencing the tragedy of a miscarriage should be arrested, much less abandoned in jail for 5 months with a $100k bond. But that’s exactly what happened to Mallori Patrice Strait in Texas. Women, particularly women of color, in this country are no longer allowed dignity even in extreme loss

Not getting much attention, except in a recent NYTimes story, is a provision to increase the tax on university endowments and those of other nonprofits.

If Republicans were proud of their bill, they'd debate it in the light of day. Instead, they're trying to move it under the cover of night like the cult of cowards that they are. They know that ripping away healthcare and food assistance from millions is harmful and unpopular.

Is there anything more Republican than giving tax breaks for buying tanning beds while removing the health insurance you'd need if you get melanoma from one?

Aaaaaaaaaa-men. People wonder how we can corral the runaway power of billionaires and the finance industry — and while direct taxation of fortunes can play a part in it, taxing the rapid-fire trading that turns Wall Street into more of a casino than a site of patient investment is important too.

Donald Trump tried to fire hundreds of airport safety workers. Newark Airport is a mess. The FAA just had to cut tons of flights. And what has Transportation Secretary Duffy been up to? Trading stocks. Congress needs to BAN stock trading by public officials.

BREAKING: Texas lawmakers passed a bill that claims to clarify when doctors may be allowed to provide abortions under limited exceptions. S.B. 31 won’t undo the harm of the state’s cruel abortion ban — the only real solution is to repeal the ban entirely.

“The decision to cancel every community project request for Congressional District 18 is not just unfair—it is a blatant disservice to the working families, Black and Latino communities, and historic neighborhoods that make up the heart of this district." bit.ly/3SfFkEY

Republicans advanced their budget at *11pm on Sunday* and they'll vote again on *Wednesday at 1am.* They know their bill is deeply unpopular and will rip away healthcare & food from millions of people. We'll keep fighting back because this shameful bill is not an inevitability.

A recent audit of CenterPoint Energy’s management found that the utility company did not adequately assess the risks or potential conflicts of interest before agreeing to an $800 million mobile generator lease.

If Trump successfully installs his heinously corrupt henchman on the 3rd Circuit, it will be because SENATE DEMOCRATS refused to confirm Biden's nominee to this very seat—based on their own Islamophobia and credulous embrace of bigoted GOP smears. Just a total nightmare top to bottom.

Cato has published my comprehensive review of the ~240 Venezuelans the US government renditioned 2 months ago to Salvador’s notorious prison. We identified FIFTY who came legally, never violated any immigration law, but are imprisoned at the US government’s request and at US taxpayer expense.

Oooof. Those direct air capture machines built by Climeworks in Iceland, to pull carbon dioxide out of the air? Turns out ... they have generated more CO2 than they have captured.

When will voters ever learn that the GOP is not the fiscally responsible party?

✅Clean holding that Trump violated due process ✅Classwide relief for targeted migrants ✅Bristling skepticism that this administration can be trusted to keep its word ✅Frustration that the conservative lower courts failed to intervene Yes, this ruling is a big deal. slate.com/news-and-pol...

do any of these people actually know what medicaid is?

🚨BREAKING: The Supreme Court in a 7-2 ruling Friday said the Trump administration violated the due process rights of Venezuelan migrants in its rushed effort to remove them from the U.S. last month using the Alien Enemies Act (AEA), a 1798 wartime law. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

The Houston Chronicle comes out in support of wind & solar on the Texas grid, and kindly requests that the Texas legislature not shoot the state in the dick.

Republicans just blocked their own "big, beautiful bill" that would kick millions of Americans off their health care...because it doesn't cut Medicaid enough.

The nation’s air-safety system suffers from the same malady as much of the federal government: years of underfunding by politicians who somehow expect to get something for nothing, David A. Graham writes in The Atlantic Daily.

#Opinion: Half of all counterfeit pills contain fentanyl. Texas is one of only five states where test strips aren't legal. House Bill 1644 saves lives. trib.al/hwRvcA7

We’ve busted past 431 ppm. The last time CO2 levels were consistently this high was 14,000,000 years ago, when your ancestor was also the ancestor of all chimpanzees, gorillas & orangutans. These are not normal times, & carrying on as normal is the single worst thing we can do.

The peak demand record for May fell today, no conservation call or energy emergencies, as solar met 25-30% of demand throughout the day. Also, the New York Times covers anti-energy bills that would render the Texas economy "dead in the water." #txlege www.douglewin.com/p/peak-perf...

@repfletcher.bsky.social "This budget begs the question, 'who are we?' What kind of society do we want to be? And today, the House Republicans' answer in this bill is that we want to be one that takes away health care from people like Ricky, to give tax cuts to people like Elon Musk."
