Asked by @By_NathanBrown about why Saturday's qualifying results weren't changed, Doug Boles says: "It was a safety violation. If you ask most in the paddock…this had a 0.0 mph impact on the car." Says he feels "very comfortable" the fastest cars are in the field.

Doug Boles, asked by @marshallpruett about Newgarden's car in the IMS museum that also has the modified attenuator on it: "It won the Indianapolis 500." Pruett asked if any results could be changed from last year due to this revelation: "No sir, it won the Indianapolis 500."

Sorry I know there's some other stuff happening in IndyCar today, but I do have a 12 Questions interview with the champ and points leader @AlexPalou here! https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6362056/2025/05/21/alex-palou-indy-500-indycar-champion-12-questions/

Stunning news from Team Penske, which effectively parts ways with its entire IndyCar team leadership (president, managing director and GM). Roger Penske says "nothing is more important than the integrity of our sport and our race teams."

After voting in the HOF, I flew into Chicago before driving back down to Indy. Figured I’d swing by Chicagoland Speedway and see how it was doing, but of course had the bad luck to catch a super foggy day.

A lot of the replies to my NASCAR Hall of Fame vote were asking why Burton over anyone else. I’ll explain my reasoning here and what I made of the feel in the room today: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6371048/2025/05/20/nascar-hall-of-fame-2026-kurt-busch-jeff-burton-harry-gant

Voting percentages: Busch and Gant each got 61% on Modern Era ballot. Jeff Burton was third. Ray Hendrick got 31% of Pioneer ballot. Bob Welborn was second.

Kurt Busch, Harry Gant, Ray Hendrick voted into NASCAR Hall of Fame. Humpy Wheeler gets Landmark Award. Here was my ballot.

Our #Indy500 week feature coverage kicks off with a profile of @PatricioOWard, by @mwc13_3. A look at IndyCar's rock star: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6367963/2025/05/20/pato-oward-indy-500-mclaren-f1/

Practice report for Kyle Larson today, via @ArrowMcLaren. Only one more practice remaining for the #Indy500 now (Carb Day on Friday).

Team Penske cars penalized at #Indy500 after illegally modified part is found before qualifying. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6368008/2025/05/19/indy-500-penske-josef-newgarden-will-power-penalty

Whoa, major Indy 500 development as Newgarden and Power are sent to the rear as the result of their technical violations.

Was the All-Star Race a good race?

Gotta disagree with Logano that Bell did anything wrong because I sure felt like Logano ran Bell up high first. No? Didn't he open the door to the same thing happening to him? I need to see a replay I guess.

18 lead changes in an All-Star Race, folks. 18.

That's an actual All-Star performance, what Christopher Bell did there. I'd like to know why Logano stayed out, but Bell went up there and got it and deserved to win.

Remember that Bell wants to change the reputation of Cup Series racing for the lead, so you know he was trying to do that as fairly and cleanly as possible. Deserves credit for that IMO. That's actual racing.

Joey Logano has 41-lap older tires. Is he simply the best defender out there? Seems to do it better than anyone.

Please someone take my microphone away before I can podcast tonight. I'm begging you

Har har har har har har

Oh shoot me

Here's the flag I'm waving

Coming to The Teardown later tonight. Fun interview!

BOB and his camera are used to hearing from officials to explain a rules violation

Indy 500 polesitter Robert Shwartzman mentioned his music career in the post-qualifying press conference. Here's his hip hop song "Active." Pretty good??? https://youtu.be/EvjSAAB6t4c?si=IaN8-G90o1QaA55Z

Robert Shwartzman becomes the first rookie in 42 years to take #Indy500 pole. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6366193/2025/05/18/indianapolis-500-pole-winner-robert-shwartzman/

Rookie Robert Shwartzman said he’d let himself think about what winning the #Indy500 pole would be like and then told himself “Robert, get back to reality.” How’s this for reality?

Excited to have Robert Shwartzman on The Teardown tonight!

NO WAY. That just happened!! Rookie driver. First-EVER oval race in ANY series. Brand new IndyCar team. ROBERT SHWARTZMAN has done it! He takes the pole for the 109th #Indy500

ONE driver to go. 1. Shwartzman 2. Sato 3. O'Ward 4. Dixon 5. Palou

ROOKIE Robert Shwartzman for a brand new team moves to provisional pole at Indy with two drivers to go! Front row secured at a minimum. Amazing stuff. 1. Shwartzman 2. Sato 3. Dixon 4. Palou

After three cars of the final round of Indy 500 qualifying: 1. Sato 2. Dixon 3. Palou

Technology is amazing, I'm mesmerized

Fox has the most insane ghost car graphic btw from the in-car camera view.

After two of six cars in final round of Indy 500 qualifying: 1. Sato 2. Palou

Here we go. Six drivers to determine the pole position for the Indianapolis 500. Have to go all out, everything on the line here.

Rookie Jacob Abel can't go fast enough to bump his Dale Coyne Racing teammate Rinus VeeKay and he misses the Indy 500. High drama in the final minute. VeeKay in, Abel out.

Over in Indy, Rinus VeeKay pulled his time to make a better run, and now he's gone WAY slower and is at risk of being bumped out of the Indy 500. His teammate Jacob Abel is going to have a chance to knock him out with TWO minutes left!

Robert Shwartzman, the former F1 hopeful, continues to astound in his first oval start of any kind. He just launched himself into the Fast Six. For a brand new team, too (Prema). Insane.

NEWS: IndyCar says Josef Newgarden and Will Power will not be allowed to make a qualifying attempt today after failing tech inspection.

Time for top 12 qualifying at the #Indy500. Six drivers will advance to the Fast Six pole shootout later tonight. They have one hour to settle which drivers move on. After this is Bump Day (four drivers, one goes home). Then the Fast Six for the pole. TV: Big FOX

As seen on the media center TVs, a large gouge in the track at Indy. Look at the dude’s hand.

Holy crap, that was big. Just a massive wreck with the car coming apart. McLaughlin is P1 in practice, and now that car is completely destroyed. There's even a GOUGE in the track.

Huge crash in Indy 500 qualifying practice. It's 2024 polesitter Scott McLaughlin.
