If you were planning to watch one forgotten 1970s beer commercial today, make it this one. In its own way, this is up there with Major Benest.

"This pub is available for tenancy." A Burton-on-Trent institution. Former Bass malt & bottle store. Small rooms & snugs. Draught Bass. Drinks can be taken to Indian restaurant next door. Filled cobs at weekends. Burton Bookworms meets every Wed. An iconic pub looking for the perfect fit.

Just heard a clip of Nigel Kneale, saying Philip Purser claimed the 6x30m drama serial was clearly the highest form of television, the medium’s great dramatic innovation. I heartily agree. And it’s interesting that we’ve completely got rid of it. Like abandoning the three minute pop song.

Heads up for HGV drivers wanting to go northwards from M4 jct 13 (Chieveley) towards Oxford on the weekends beginning 27 June and 4 July. Resurfacing work taking place. If you only want to go to Didcot that means an officially recommended detour of about 75 miles!

This will be on cask at @skbeerfestival.bsky.social from Thursday this week.

Just a quick reminder.

A wonderful archive fragment circa 1964. Ringo's mum was asked for an autograph. She didn't want to sign Elsie Starkey or Elsie Graves or Elsie Graves-Starkey and she probably wanted to reassure the applicant she was Ringo's mum, so she signed Mrs E. Starr, a name she never had.

Watched 12 Angry Men again last night. Loved it as much as when I first saw it decades ago.

Bar towel of the day. Not sure where I got this one from. I guess maybe it was tucked in with some beers from South America, where Skol is still a thing.

The wonderful brewing historian Martyn Cornell died suddenly yesterday at 72. He was a wonderful man, kind and gentle, and his writing transformed the way we understand beer and the people who made it.
