If we stop training new coders, who will build the *next* generation of models? Who will debug the bad outputs, or develop good tests? No current model is sufficiently reliable or accurate to design its own replacement.

Hey, the dataset is out now. A million books: huggingface.co/datasets/ins... H/t @naitian.org for the link

A win! A federal judge has ordered the government to restore hundreds of NIH grants slashed by the Trump administration, ruling the cuts were discriminatory against minorities and LGBTQ individuals. The judge said he’d have to be ā€œblindā€ not to see the discrimination and declared the cuts illegal.

🤠 New release announcement for our datawrangler package! Try it using: pip install --upgrade pydata-wrangler Lots of awesome performance improvements (including native polars support!), simplified API, support for @hf.co text embeddings, etc. More info here: data-wrangler.readthedocs.org

Neuroscientist Kristina Visscher writes, ā€œI’m reaching out to you as a nerdy kid from Northport, Alabama, who – thanks to a great Alabama public education – got a Ph.D. in Neuroscienceā€ @visscherlab.bsky.social www.al.com/news/2025/06...

I'm excited to announce that my lab's open textbook on Scientific Computing for Cognitive Neuroscience (v1.0) has just gone live! Our goal is to help mend the gap between the computational skills needed by cognitive neuroscience, and typical curricula that don't yet include it. 1/3

My new piece in Nature Human Behavior: "We need to fight for the next generation of US researchers" All trainees need 3 things to thrive. In the US, those things have been ripped away. Let's brainstorm and fight to get them back. (share link): www.nature.com/articles/s41...

must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have federal funding that was promised to you for important work suddenly and arbitrarily ripped away

If you hate statistics like I do, then you'll love my free lectures. Putting science before statistics, 20 lectures from basics of inference & causal modeling to multilevel models & dynamic state space models. It's all free, made with love and sympathy. 🧪 #stats www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

For anyone in the memory field, an incredible summary and tribute to Endel Tulving from Gus Craik. Read it for the writing alone. royalsocietypublishing.org/action/oidcS...

Hard copies have arrived!!!!!

I'm Dr. Annie Andrews. I’m a pediatrician, not a politician. But either way I know how to handle people who are full of sh*t. Today I am announcing my campaign for US Senate to replace Lindsey Graham. Share this if you're with me. www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8wM...

A huge step from HHS that is at odds with science showing significant risks for young children and pregnant women — and that directly contradicts *the FDA's own publication* from last week listing pregnancy as a high-risk condition that would qualify people for this fall's Covid vaccine

tl;dr — this EO co-opts the language of open science to implement a system of political control wherein presidential appointees are given broad latitude to designate any number of reasonable scientific activities and inferences as scientific misconduct, and to penalize those involved accordingly.

Well said. It was never about antisemitism. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/23/o...

Trying this again and tagging the right @sarahehenderson.bsky.social 😬 Hopefully other Sarah learned something about neural states šŸ˜‚

Registration for #CogSci2025 IS OPEN and you'll get the BEST RATE if you register before June 2! cognitivesciencesociety.org/registration/ If attending poses financial challenges, we're still offering financial hardship waiver and support for your additional family care costs! Apply by May 30!

🚨 A new rule would let career scientists like NSF/NIH program officers be replaced by political appointees Already 14,000+ public comments, deadline is Friday šŸ“£ Comments can be short. Courts consider them—and scientists with NSF/NIH experience are especially impactful Speak up! shorturl.at/WKuBj

🄳Excited to share that I am joining Columbia July 2025 @columbiauniversity.bsky.social Looking for🚨lab managers🚨postdocs🚨grad students! Not that anyone asked, but during my tenure on the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Board, under part of Obama-2 and all of Trump-1, we visited Military Bases domestically & abroad. At no time did any member of the Armed Forces I met say to me: ā€œAmerica needs less science funding.ā€

Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family. Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace. We pray for a fast and full recovery.

who did this

Reminded of Ed Yong’s response to this question: ā€œIf I cover a preprint, I talk to 2-3 experts to get their views before writing the story. That’s exactly what I do if I cover a journal articleā€¦ā€

šŸ“£ It's official: I'm super excited to share that I'll be joining Rice University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences! Lab will launch in Summer 2026— I'll be recruiting over the next year, so please spread the word! Short thread ā¤µļø

this is a letter to the editor from a high school track runner who came in second to a trans girl in a race. her state house rep in maine started talking about it. so she wrote this: www.pressherald.com/2025/05/14/r...

Shout out to all of the faculty and students who made it through this semester in particular. What a time to be teaching and learning in spaces that are directly under attack from people who benefited from having access to the same resources themselves.

When you successfully anticipate future events, what happens to your ability to encode the present? šŸ¤” Successful prediction increases the likelihood of successful encoding. We speculate about how switching between distinct encoding & prediction states can produce this effect. osf.io/preprints/ps...

"Imagine the auto industry without 3D printing. NSF funded that. Artificial intelligence? NSF. MRI machines that help doctors diagnose you? NSF. Doppler radar technology that makes aviation safer by conquering wind shear? NSF. Duolingoā€˜s underlying programming? NSF. The internet itself? NSF."

Despite everything going on, I may have funds to hire a postdoc this year šŸ˜¬šŸ¤žšŸ§‘ā€šŸ”¬ Open to a wide variety of possible projects in social and cognitive neuroscience. Get in touch if you are interested! Reposts appreciated.

Now they are gutting NSF. This is radical destruction. The Trump goal is to end scientific research in America. Our sense is that few people, even inside the government, have actually grappled with this reality.

I’m thrilled to announce that I will start as a presidential assistant professor in Neuroscience at the City U of Hong Kong in Jan 2026! I have RA, PhD, and postdoc positions available! Come work with me on neural network models + experiments on human memory! RT appreciated! (1/5)
