Remains of #Mayan city nearly 3,000 years old unearthed in #Guatemala - www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m... "Pyramids and monuments suggest Los Abuelos was a significant ceremonial site, archaeologists say" amazing what is still being found

leave my beautiful metro alone you twisted psychos

Musk bought Twitter on 22nd October 2022. Used Tesla price has fallen ever since that month, this chart seems to show... Causation and correlation intersecting nicely this time.

OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

Wow, two days in a row, done in two rows! Wordle 1,439 2/6 ⬜🟨🟨⬜🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

The Free Speech Administration throwing down arguably the biggest sledgehammer against free thought and association in my lifetime.

THis reflects my experience - there's a huge number of MIMBYs (Maybe imby) who don't oppose new housing in principle but want a strong say in where, how, design, connectivity, landscape... All the hard attacks on NIMBYs only harden opposition. demos.co.uk/research/the... (& social housing please!)

I don't like this kind of blah - Homes England interim CEO Eammon Boylan: "One of the things we've had a lot of issues with is asking places what their priorities are..." (Via Local Govt Chronicle) Places do NOT have priorities. A place isn't a person, not even a thing, but an abstract concept!

This has always been the GOP's strategy: 1) Cut taxes for the wealthy & corporations by claiming they'll pay for themselves. 2) Explode the deficit. 3) Demand cuts to vital programs that help millions. 4) Repeat. They're trying to get away with it again.

Great read in @prospect.org: Trump’s second term is on track to be defined as The Golden Age of Scams. “The first Trump administration didn’t pay much attention to white-collar civil and criminal enforcement, but this term is off the charts."

Unfortunately we all understand what the aim is - the forcible depopulation of Gaza via the killing or exile of its entire population.

“Israel helped nurture Hamas for the explicit aim of denying Palestinians a state. And now… it has laid Gaza to waste, in pursuit of a monster it helped spawn.” My Observer column, in print tomorrow, online today: observer.co.uk/news/columni...

So ludicrous. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is attempting to use the murders of the Israeli diplomats Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim in New York to whitewash his regime’s annihilation of 50,000+ Palestinians in Gaza.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court’s conservatives allow Trump’s firing of members of multi-member boards to remain in effect during litigation, effectively overruling a 90-year-old precedent. The liberal justices, in an opinion by Kagan, dissents. More to come: www.lawdork.com

i think it should be a bigger story that the president held a meeting with a foreign head of state where he ranted about the most gutter white supremacist propaganda you can find on the internet

Took part in an interesting Chatham House rule discussion this morning covering both the legal/policy substance and the public politics of the European Convention on Human Rights. I contributed on why many people have uncertain and cross-pressured views, outside two solid defend/oppose groups

Ah, it seems "drops" in American has different meaning from "drops" in English! I was worried for a moment...

Foreign leaders, top tip, next time you are doing a press conference in the White House go armed with a stack of printed newspaper articles on US school massacres. Will come in handy. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cp...

We have to face it: the Brexit Parliamentary Universe simply isn't drawing the crowds any more. thecritic.co.uk/brex...

“The heightened worries stem not only from public and private messaging from senior Israeli officials …but also from intercepted Israeli communications and observations of Israeli military movements that could suggest an imminent strike” www.cnn.com/2025/05/20/p...

The road to serfdom, Trump era.

I talked to NPR about seeing DHS White House liaison Paul Ingrassia at a Nick Fuentes rally last year.

Netanyahu wants a free hand in continuing to commit genocide (within the legal definition thereof)

The beginning of a chilling documentary series from 20 years in the future detailing the fall of the American Republic.

BREAKING: The Trump administration is working on a plan to permanently relocate up to 1 million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Libya, five people with knowledge of the effort told NBC News.

Terrible policy by Labour. Israel has become a state of state terrorism.

This is an incredible story when you read it and discover what actually happened was: - Lammy paid in advance - The driver tried to extort him for a massive tip - Drove off with his luggage - At somepoint clocked he was a VIP - Is now selling the story to The Sun.

Lord Iain McNicol, a former general secretary of the Labour party, has apologised for breaking the House of Lords code of conduct by writing to the Treasury to promote a cryptocurrency firm that was paying him. Standards investigation followed Guardian reporting in The Lords Debate project.

There were strong nominal and real Q1 GDP figures for the UK today I've picked up quite a lot of concern that the ONS figures might be plagued with seasonal adjustment problems GDP growth was also strong in Q1 2024 WARNING - This 🧵is nerdy (but I hope informative) 1/

Helpful call for a rethink on tax from a recently departed No.10 economics adviser But his description & justification of fiscal rules & assumptions reveals a constrained & rigid government mindset that will keep us locked into an austerity doom loop... 🧵 www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

NEW from me: China's CO2 emissions fell ~1.6% in the first quarter and have now been flat or down for more than a year. This is the first time on record that emissions are falling due to clean energy growth, not slow power demand.

Very good Martin Wolf article on the problem of excess global savings. Wolf is one of the few economists who thinks in global terms and understands the balance of payments. www.ft.com/content/c715...

It's good to see that Prince Andrew's rating has shot up by 25%.

extraordinary that Thames Water executives are getting *new* bonuses, this time as a result of the £3bn rescue loan from the spring - which loads the company with interest rates of nearly 10% via me and Gill Plimmer www.ft.com/content/1f6d...

Pathetic.

I’m not a celebrated political strategist - unlike another Irishman of a similar vintage living in the U.K. - but to putting your weakest position (immigration) front and centre of almost every media intervention and major policy announcement seems like political madness.

A beautiful, though asymmetric, handaxe. It was made half a million years ago by a person from an early Neanderthal population at Boxgrove, England. While sediment stained, it is still extremely sharp and would have made a very effective butchery knife. #FlintFriday 🦣🏺
