UPDATE- I’m told there are 99 signatures

MPs who have signed the amendment - spearheaded by Treasury select chair Meg Hillier - include a dozen other SC chairs and the former cabinet minister Louise Haigh. They also include Vicky Foxcroft, who quit as a whip last week.

Holy crap it's being led by *Meg Hillier* Hillier did once raise concerns about the planned cuts in Parliament - specifically about raising the minimum qualifying age for the UC health payment to 2022 - but I didn't really expect her to rebel, let alone lead it www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Good scoop. Yet more evidence that welfare remains totemic in the party cadre.

Here’s the story - the amendment will be published later this evening but expect more names to be added in the coming days www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

BREAKING - I understand a large number of MPs - potentially 80+ and including select committee chair are signing a reasoned amendment to the welfare bill which declines to give it a second reading

The US did not ask to use UK airbases to support its overnight bombing of Iran because that would have required British ministers to take a view on the legality of the attack, according to a former government adviser.

PM this morning: “Iran’s nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security. Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the US has taken action to alleviate that threat.” 1/2

My weekend long read on the assisted dying bill - the alliances brokered on each side, the disquiet in Number 10 and the pressure felt by MPs on making this historic change. It has been fascinating to cover, I feel so fortunate in this job to have been able to have such thoughtful conversations

🚨 Assisted dying passes the Commons - 314 votes to 294

Understand David Davis voted for assisted dying - long courted by the other side

Keir Starmer expected to vote on assisted dying today

Amendments put forward by opponents of the assisted dying bill are being defeated, including the one just now from Daniel Francis. It's not an exact science but might give us some indication of how the vote will go at 2ish.

The assisted dying vote today will kick off at 9.30 but the first hour we expect to be voted on amendments. From 10.30 the third read debate will start, Kim Leadbeater will open. James Cleverly to speak for the opposition. Expect a closure motion to push it to vote around 2pm - result 2.15ish

The sudden normality of this in recent months is incredibly frightening

BREAKING- Vicky Foxcroft has resigned as a government whip over the welfare cuts - first resignation amid deep dissatisfaction with the bill. She was shadow disability minister before the election.

The UK is “behind the curve” on assisted dying among progressive nations, the bill’s sponsor Kim Leadbeater has said on the eve of one of the most consequential votes for social change in England and Wales. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Exc - Blue Labour Dan Carden to vote against assisted dying bill. “The values of family, social bonds, responsibilities, time and community will be diminished, with isolation, atomisation and individualism winning again.” www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

One of my favourite recent pastimes is looking through Keir Starmer's old Guardian op-eds. Here's a great one, from 2003. (h/t @tom-clark.bsky.social) www.theguardian.com/politics/200...

Pretty comprehensive public backing for assisted dying in latest YouGov poll -75% believe that assisted dying should in principle be legal in some form in the UK, compared to 14% opposed. Interestingly, this is basically identical to opinion last November.

Attorney general warns UK joining war on Iran may be illegal Richard Hermer is understood to have said Britain must limit its involvement to defending allies www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

“If anyone can tell me where the PM is, I would be astonished, because it is not entirely clear.” Senior civil servant quoted by Tim Shipman www.spectator.co.uk/article/star...

My piece on what could be one of the big moments of Labour’s second year - the ECHR. Mood is hardening in government that government must be seen to act, probably through legislation, to change how convention can be interpreted by judges www.theguardian.com/law/2025/jun...
