I'm staying at a hotel that is so fancy and spa-oriented, I fear I might get kicked out if they find my Kit Kat bar.

Here's this week's newsletter. The Survival Weekly Dispatch - Volume 12, Issue 23 open.substack.com/pub/jimcobb/...

This was really nice to see. We've very happy with how this issue turned out, and we're not the only ones!

The manuscript for the revised edition of PREPPER’S HOME DEFENSE has been turned in. All told, I’d say about 20% of the manuscript is new information, with the remainder having been tweaked throughout for clarity and such. I believe we’re looking at a release in early 2026.

From something I'm working on today: "As always when it comes to interpreting body language, you need to put signals into context and read the overall message. Concentrating on just one individual cue is like seeing one letter and trying to discern the meaning of the entire sentence."

Not sure what to get Dad for Father's Day? Here are five knife recommendations, including models from Bark River Knives, Spartan Blades, Buck Knives, and Smith & Sons Knife Company. gatdaily.com/articles/get...

Realized last night that I have a book due in five days. Looks like I'll be chained to the keyboard for the foreseeable future.

Recently, I’ve noticed a couple of authors I follow post about emergency preparedness. I don’t know either of them to be any sort of #prepper. It’s these sorts of random mentions that I love to see. It tells me that preparedness is becoming more mainstream. That’s a good thing.

As excited as I am to read the stories in this anthology, I'm also eager to see what @stephenking.bsky.social might have to say about two cherished friends of mine, @cgolden.bsky.social and @briankeene.bsky.social. August 19th can't come fast enough. www.amazon.com/dp/1668057557/

Tomorrow is the Walworth County Preparedness Expo. This FREE event will run 9AM-1PM. We’ll be in the South Building at Gateway Technical College, 400 County Highway H, Elkhorn, WI. Classes, giveaways, lots of great information to be shared.

Playing around with the Wingard Wearables Empress. Review coming soon, but thus far I'm pretty damn impressed with it. #prepper #prepping #selfdefense #tomahawk #coolstuff

Something I learned over the weekend. When a trail description includes the word level, it's referring to the trail's side to side fluctuation, not the absence of hilly terrain. Also, the folks who write trail descriptions have a wildly different interpretation than I of the terms easy and moderate.

I'm headed to the post office tomorrow. If any of you wanted to order a signed copy of Countdown to Preparedness (2nd edition), now would be a great time to do so. They're $25 each, including shipping in the US. Drop me a DM if you want to order one.

The newsletter went out a little late today, but here's the link. open.substack.com/pub/jimcobb/...

I was very honored to learn that one of my books was selected to be a recommended Father's Day gift in this article. gatdaily.com/articles/fat... #preppers #prepping #survival #tactical #511tactical

I have a few copies of Countdown to Preparedness (2nd edition) available before the book releases in July. Happy to sign them, of course. Cost is $25/each, including shipping in the US. Drop me a DM if interested. Thanks!

Saddened to learn Luke won't be posting any more videos to his Outdoor Boys YouTube channel. Such great content, wholesome and genuine. youtu.be/VwC8jwnXfo4?...

I’ve been doing this a while now, and this feeling never gets old. Just received my copies of the new COUNTDOWN TO PREPAREDNESS (2nd edition). The first edition is on the left. It doesn’t come out officially until July, I believe. You can preorder it anywhere you buy books.

Pro tip – if you’re caught in severe weather with tornadic possibilities while on the road, do NOT park under bridges. The wind can be channeled through these areas, creating a wind tunnel effect and putting you at even greater risk.

We have some potentially severe weather headed in locally today and tonight. It’s fun listening to national weather correspondents try to pronounce Wisconsin town names.

Happy birthday to George Carlin. He’d have been 88 years old today. Carlin was the first comedian I got into when I was young, the first of many to follow. I listened to his albums so often I had many of his routines memorized. I even got an opportunity to briefly chat with him on the phone.

“Your magazine has too many ads!” Tell me you’ve never actually read Backwoods Survival Guide without telling me you’ve never actually read Backwoods Survival Guide. For those unaware, there are ZERO ads in the magazine. It’s just actual content from cover to cover.

We have a road trip coming up in a few weeks. Looking for suggestions for an audiobook or two my wife and I can listen to during the trip. Preferably something funny or filled with action, ideally both. Not looking for anything too deep or gory. Please and thanks!

If it doesn't open, then it's not your door.

Saw this morning that my review of the Peacemaker from Wheat State Cutlery was the most popular article on the GearJunkie site. That's pretty cool! #knifereview #knife #knives #finchknifeco #gearjunkie

Happy book birthday to my good friend Christopher Golden! THE NIGHT BIRDS releases today. It looks absolutely amazing and I can't wait to check it out. www.amazon.com/Night-Birds-...

Finally managed to snag my own copy of Recoil Offgrid #67. As always, it's filled with great articles from some of the best writers in the niche, including Reuben Bolieu, Scott Finazzo, and Matt Williams. There are even a couple of articles from me in this one.

When it comes to #prepper-centric YouTube, which channels do you follow?

If you're on the hunt for well-written, riveting novels that take place during and after a world-changing disaster, I encourage you to check out the Victoria Emerson series by John Gilstrap. Easily some of the best books I've read in years.

A key #survival trait, one that isn’t talked about very often, is a sense of humor. Being able to take a step back and find the funny in a bad situation can go a long way toward reducing stress and anxiety.
