As US-China trade talks begin, diplomats tell me Beijing believes it can stand up to and outlast the Trump administration in a trade war. www.cnn.com/2025/05/09/p...

The new pope tweeting in February:

Breaking: New Pope is Chicago Cardinal Robert Prevost, the first American pope in history and a close confidant of Francis. He will take the name Leo XIV.

Breaking: White smoke from Vatican conclave signals new pope elected.

Appears the WH is abandoning its own ceasefire plan due to Russian intransigence: “What the Russians have said – again, you don't have to agree with it, but it's important to understand where the other side is coming from…is a 30-day ceasefire is not in our strategic interest,” VP Vance said.

Breaking: Pakistan shot down two Indian aircraft during the strikes, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif, spokesman for the Pakistani military, tells me on the air just now. He called the Indian attack “a blatant act of war.”

Breaking: India carries out strikes inside Pakistan-administered Kashmir, says Indian Armed Forces

What is the benefit to the U.S. of repeating a 51st state jibe resoundingly rejected by Canada’s newly elected leader, both of Canada’s leading political parties and the Canadian public? What does it bring the American public or even the Trump admin now looking for a new trade agreement with Canada?

Breaking: Germany’s Friedrich Merz has won a parliamentary vote to become chancellor on the second attempt, hours after an unprecedented defeat. In a hastily organized session on Tuesday afternoon, 325 lawmakers voted to approve his ascension — more than the 316 required.

New: The US economy registered its worst quarter since 2022. Gross domestic product, which measures all the goods and services produced in the economy, *shrank* at an annualized rate of 0.3% in the first quarter, the Commerce Dept said - a sharp slowdown from the fourth quarter’s 2.4% growth rate.

New: Consumer confidence sank 7.9 points in April to a reading of 86, the Conference Board said in its latest survey released Tuesday. That’s the lowest level since May 2020 and a larger decline than economists had projected.

A remarkable turnaround for Canada’s liberal party, driven in no small part by reaction to Trump’s tariffs and 51st state jibes. Breaking: Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney is on course to secure a full four-year term with Canadian media projecting a win for the Liberals in federal elections.

Patently false. In fact, Ukraine fought back an invading Russian army inflicting punishing losses. Q: What concessions has Russia offered up thus far to get to the point where you're closer to peace? Trump: “Stopping the war, stopping, taking the whole country? Pretty big concession.”

One of the most consistent features of Trump’s foreign policy through two administrations remains his reluctance to criticize Putin or hold him accountable.

“The lack of context minimized the government’s own findings that atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide — the most abundant planet-warming gas in the air — jumped up by a record amount in 2024.” www.cnn.com/2025/04/22/c...

Hi folks, Special one-day deal from my publisher today: “The Return of Great Powers” - selected by the @nytimes as a notable book of 2024 - is just $1.99 today in ebook form. A new chance to dive into our rapidly changing world. Thanks! www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/734287...

Pope Francis was a true man for others - championing the Jesuit values of care for the person, service and education - a man for our times as well. Rest in Peace.

New: The Supreme Court early Saturday morning paused the deportation of immigrants potentially subject to the Alien Enemies Act, freezing action in a fast-developing case involving a group of immigrants in Texas who say the Trump administration was working to remove them.

Due process what the 4th Circuit emphasized in its decision: “If today the executive claims the right to deport without due process and in disregard of court orders, what assurance will there be tomorrow that it will not deport American citizens and then disclaim responsibility to bring them home?”

The El Salvador story is less about Abrego Garcia himself than about the right to due process. The assault on Harvard is less about the school itself (there are and will be others) but attempted federal control of private universities. 1/

It’s been 37 days since Ukraine agreed to Trump’s ceasefire proposal after the U.S. suspended intel sharing. Russia has still not agreed and continues to wage war without any additional U.S. penalties or sanctions. www.cnn.com/2025/03/11/w...

Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna tells me Putin is taking advantage of Trump’s ceasefire push: “He's just using the opportunity that President Trump gave him to ask for more…he's asking for everything he asked for years ago.”

Consider the logic: a statement condemning an attack on civilians is apparently a greater impediment to peace talks than the attack itself.

The day after a devastating Russian attack on civilians, Trump blames Biden and Zelensky for the war but not Putin, who ordered the invasion. When will Trump’s long-threatened vow to get tough on Russia happen? In fact, he and Witkoff are echoing Putin’s talking points more, not less of late.

This happened 48 hours after Witkoff met Putin in Moscow: New - Russian missiles hit the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy in the deadliest attack this year, killing at least 31 people, including two children, as residents gathered for Sunday church services, according to President Zelensky.

Very informative chart from Washington Post

JPMORGAN: To argue that today’s 145% China tariff clarification “is somehow less of a shock as a result is very misguided .. The sudden stop of roughly $450bn in US imports and the resulting disruption to US supply chains would be a significant blow .. We maintain our call for a US recession ..”

New: Consumer sentiment plunged 11% this month to a preliminary reading of 50.8, the University of Michigan said in its latest survey released Friday, the second-lowest reading on records going back to 1952. April’s reading was lower than anything seen during the Great Recession.

Bond yields, the dollar and global stocks are an antidote to the Trump reality distortion field. Unlike election fraud or condoms to Gaza and the like, he can’t create numbers out of thin air. When money is on the line, if investors don’t believe him, they will sell.

New: Oil prices tumbled on Thursday on concerns that the trade war will threaten the world economy and damage demand for energy. US crude dropped 4.6% to $59.50 a barrel in recent trading. That means oil has given back virtually all of Wednesday’s big gains.

So now “only” 50% of the global economy (China + the U.S.) is involved in a punishing trade war.

Breaking: President Trump says he is applying a 90-day pause on new tariffs as his trade war shakes the world economy.   At the same time, he announced he was raising tariff rates on China to 125%, ratcheting up his tit-for-tat with Beijing.

Consider this: one man, against the advice of some of his own close advisors, bank chiefs, CEOs, several GOP lawmakers and trillion-dollar moves by the financial markets, is attempting to remake the global economy against the economic and political interests of allies and adversaries alike.

Venezuela and Greenland now oddly on the same page:

Remember: for Chinese leaders to back down to US pressure is intolerable weakness. They view it not just in strategic terms (the U.S. wants to weaken us) but in historical and colonial terms (the West has always sought to weaken us). They are unlikely to be in a mood to negotiate on Trump’s terms.

Escalation/Accommodation

The lemmings are running for the cliff and dragging us and the world along with them.

Smart point:

Do not underestimate the enormous blow to U.S. soft power from the U.S. President sparking a global economic crisis of choice: “The risk of recession in the global economy this year is raised to 60%, up from 40% earlier” - JP Morgan Note: “in the *global* economy”

Putin invaded Ukraine in part because he built a system favoring fealty over honesty. So, Russian commanders and intel officers told him what he wanted to hear about Ukraine’s capabilities, not what was true. Who - other than the markets - is speaking honestly to Trump about the costs of tariffs?
