Please do your part to help ensure that COVID vaccines remain available for the entire population. I even advocated for updating them every 3-6 months. They want to limit it to those >65 or with high risk conditions. www.regulations.gov/commenton/FD...

NIH moved up the expiration date for some funding opportunities, effectively *canceling* the next application date without removing it from the standard table. I can't even imagine how many people are still prepping these grants. 👀 List of impacted opportunities: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

The National Academy of Sciences is a private, non-profit institution. No one made them host a speaker who said that DEI "degrade our scientific enterprise." Would be nice to see some Academy members speak out on this (or what's the point) www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-st...

Tariff surcharges become reality for doing science --coming to your appliance and grocery stores soon 🧪

Brad Marchand is 5-0 in Game 7s against the Maple Leafs 👀

I do hate that we leave out USDA in these. I know it’s about congressional committee oversight of “science”, but ag research within and external to the USDA is also critical and already underfunded compared to other science. Key food security, animal and plant health, environmental outcomes, etc

"I'm still in shock. I know that there have been political issues around Harvard in recent weeks, but antibiotic resistance isn't one of them." My conversation with Harvard microbiologist @baym.lol, one of many researchers there who just lost millions in fed. grants. www.wbur.org/news/2025/05...

Having a hard time processing this. HHMI is pausing all competitions. Very demoralizing for early career scientists like me @hhmi.org

This is insane. I'm hearing from multiple sources that all federal grants at Harvard have been *TERMINATED*. Full stop.

It should be clear by now that "just apply for more grants" cannot be considered good advise much longer. What do other institutions discuss re: how to support pre-tenure (and post-tenure) to meet the grant requirement or, quite frankly, to continue running their labs?

Do you know a high school student who's queer and interested in STEM? Do they want to come to UConn for. *free* one day conference to meet and learn about queer scientists and engineers work. Join us for Queer Science June 8 in Storrs.

Just said goodbye to my NIH MIRA award. Really hurts to see the word “terminated” in writing. Even worse to see it next to the F31 awarded to a fantastic PhD student in my lab @aybv.bsky.social. I REFUSE to let this stop us!!!

Excited to introduce our lab's latest work describing how bacterial siderophores can provide an advantage to their producers. They can inhibit competitors' specialized metabolism by causing iron deficiency. 1/6 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

1/3 It’s official 🙌🏽 The Reyes Ruiz Lab is opening in 2026 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the Department of Pathobiological Sciences. My lab will focus on host antibacterial effectors and adaptation of bacteria to host-imposed stress during S. aureus infections.

Yesterday, the NIH R35 “Outstanding Investigator” grant to fund scientists in my lab studying antibiotic resistance was terminated for reasons not related to the content of the science, or any actions taken by me or members of my lab

If you're at one of the targeted institutions and have an active NIH grant you might want to check ERA Commons immediately for an "updated" NoA

The cost of the 4 F-18 planes lost in the Red Sea ($240 million) is now greater than the 2025 NEH Budget ($200 million)

The National Science Foundation marks its 75th anniversary this week. Rather than celebrate, it's time to save it. www.savensf.com/nsf-at-75-to...

An example of the disruption to science caused by the NSF’s 15% overhead dictate: At the University of Washington, all newly awarded NSF grants are now on hold indefinitely with no advance spending allowed.

Thinking about how much medical and scientific research could be funded by $180 million dollars, and trying not to die of an acute absurdity infarction.

Ok, who has the number of NSF grants $180 million would cover? Pretty sure this is 180 5 year NIH grants. How long would this fund the Alaska NOAA research on marine animal diseases? Would this cover the FDA cuts for a year? Fricking A

This is a lot of cancelled grants worth of fighter jets.

I'm very impressed with this article by @science.org highlighting how the destruction of science in the US is impacting the careers of scientists who are, you know, real people. They did a great job of capturing my fears and frustrations around my career. www.science.org/content/arti...

Innovative and truly unique work coming from academic:industry:NIH/NIAID collaboration (and a heroic self-immunized blood donor). www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

If you're a grad student or an undergrad interested in research I need to you listen to me very carefully. You cannot learn to write good research papers if you do not read good research papers. Stop asking LLMs to summarize papers for you.

Bezos plans to sell ~$4.8 billion of Amazon stock. That's only 2.5% of his holdings in the company. That sale roughly equals the proposed ~50% cut to NSF. IOW, with modest endowment-level growth of Amazon, Bezos could fund the entire NSF shortfall into perpetuity. www.cnbc.com/2025/05/02/j...

FYI: The Spencer Foundation, Kapor Foundation, The William T. Grant Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation have collaborated to offer $25K rapid response grants. "This rapid response bridge funding opportunity is for scholars and teams whose grants have recently been cancelled by NSF."

I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about the cost of that one fighter jet that slipped off the carrier deck, and how many NSF grants that a single fancy killing machine could have funded.

Welp, it begins. Sigma Aldrich.

Current NIH funding slump represents: - Research labs closing - PhD students abandoning their dreams. - Trial participants left to their own devices mid study. - A halt to scientific progress and innovation for cancer, chronic and infectious diseases. - Minority health research terminated. Etc.

From 1999-2013, RFK sold his own brand of bottled water (in plastic bottles, and with a horrible carbon footprint) that contained TWO TIMES the upper limit of fluoride recommended for dental health, which is more than the safely allowable amount per US Public Health Service, and IS potentially toxic

I have spent much more time putting out fires in the last 100 days than I have educating students or conducting research to address real-world problems.

All NIDA F31 diversity scholars officially losing their funding... I barely have words. Expected at this point but so so disappointing and unfair. We are effectively punishing some of America's best science students for telling the government they are from an underrepresented community.

Super thrilled to share our labor of love from the Asian Skin Microbiome Program! We collected >3,500 skin samples, built metagenomic libraries w/ >70 billion reads and >10TB of data to study heterogeneity of the skin microbiome in the general population (200 adults, 18 sites) t.co/ZylbJMpvpw

NEW: Per multiple sources, the National Cancer Institute’s Board of Scientific Advisors has been entirely disbanded.

Peace Corps to undergo ‘significant’ cuts after Doge review

The equivalent of ~60 multi year research grants just fell overboard
