🚨 HOUSING WIN 🚨 Last night, South Lakeview Neighbors overrode their advisory board’s recommendation and voted 23–19 in favor of the 40-home proposal at 1225 W. Belmont Ave. 🥳 This win is due entirely to the hard work of AHIL members, who spread the word on social media to drive turnout. 🏘️

Just walked out of this 2.5 hour meeting with two of my offline roommates, and they’ve totally been radicalized by the NONSENSE that happened during public comment. Requiring neighborhood approval for housing is a nightmare. We shouldn’t expect normal people to spend their evenings this way.

What are we doing here www.chicagobusiness.com/politics/cta...

This is my first time learning about James Wilson’s observation about the bias in public comments about local housing developments. How have we not learned our lesson yet? This bias was observed in the 1950s! www.governing.com/urban/housin...

I've held out for years on joining TikTok because I dont like that the CCP controls the narrative on there. That said, @jmisci.bsky.social might pull me in to make pro-housing content. His post about 40 new apartments went really viral www.tiktok.com/@jmisci/vide...

My comments to the Chicago zoning committee this morning, in favor of allowing ADUs citywide as we’ve reached the four year anniversary of a three year pilot program.

Hey Lakeview residents, there’s a neighborhood association meeting on Wednesday night where members are gonna vote on whether to recommend that new homes get built on Belmont Ave. Details in @jmisci.bsky.social’s video, but it’s on 5/21/25, 6:30 PM, and you have to live in the specified area.

SOUTH LAKEVIEW RESIDENTS: please show up to Wednesday’s public meeting to support 40 new homes (15% affordable units)! Here is my TikTok explanation of this meeting’s significance:

NWS meteorologists will do everything they can to uphold the NWS mission and save lives despite already being stretched so thin. The government needs to stop treating them as our enemies.

Chicago River appreciation post

DC, Maryland and Virginia agree to funding to fully automate @wmata.com — new signals, trains, and platform doors — over next two decades.

Colorado governor’s new executive order will condition municipalities’ receipt of $100 million in state grants on those cities’ compliance with state housing laws, including: —Allowing ADUs —Eliminating parking requirements near transit —Denser zoning districts near transit

Here is the flyer that the neighborhood busybodies are circulating about the new apartment they’re planning to vote against on Wednesday. Can anyone imagine the horror of a 5 STORY APARTMENT BUILDING on our streets?!? Oh wait, there’s one right here and it’s lovely.

Do you live within the South Lakeview Neighbors boundary? If so, you won’t want to miss their meeting on Wednesday, 5/21! Even if it’s your first meeting, you will be eligible to vote YES on 40 new homes. 🏘️

A CEQA attorney whining about SB 607 and AB 609, two bills that re-focus the California Environmental Quality Act on actually protecting the environment, reminds me of SF auto glass shops complaining about their lost business after the cops cracked down on car break-ins.

Incredible imagery of yesterday’s dust storm in Illinois from the GOES-19 satellite.

As violent tornadoes tear across eastern Kentucky tonight, remember that because of DOGE initiated budget cuts, the Jackson, KY NWS office is forced to close at times (in quieter weather). That this is even something they need to worry about is an *utter disgrace.*

Dust storm in the loop, seen from a rooftop in Lakeview

I managed one shot of the cotton candy cumulonimbus before darker, low-level clouds slid into the top of the frame. It was a gorgeous, surreal moment to see rain still falling over the east side of downtown, while fluffy pink clouds and blue sky belied the strength of the storm still in progress

Update: South Lakeview Neighbors has confirmed that there is no 60 day membership requirement to vote on the new housing proposal on Belmont. If you live in the neighborhood, you can join the group (with a $10 annual fee) at 6:30pm on Wednesday before the meeting. Vote YES to rezone for apartments!

That was a great show in the sky this evening #ILWX

It's safe to assume the vast majority of these neighbors' homes were not voted on by the residents who came before them. So who gives them the power to deny housing that we desperately need on land they don't own?

"Moore didn’t sign up to talk during the public comment period, but a board member spotted him in the audience and CTA board chair Lester Barclay invited him to speak" ...about how mad he is that his former Chief of Staff isn't being handed the CEO job on a silver platter. This city, man...

I have to brag about my engagement again. It was the coolest thing I’ve ever planned and I will treasure these photos (taken by Victor Hilitski!) for the rest of my life. Took a lot of work to figure out the ideal location/time to align with the moonrise, but it paid off!

Remember when Brandon Johnson appointed 7 school board members, but those 7 refused to fire the CPS chief, so Brandon Johnson somehow got them all to resign instead of denying him? I’ll stop short of calling them cowards for resigning, but I appreciate Roberto Requejo for standing his ground here.

Great Tribune article: www.chicagotribune.com/2025/05/14/3...

Timely reminder that CTA has 50 fewer train operators than we did in 2019, and they’re failing to run around 20% of scheduled trains every single day.

This state bill seems like it was written by the car dealership lobby. I can’t imagine this being beneficial to Illinois consumers. What are the upsides to it?

My neighborhood association (South Lakeview Neighbors) will be voting on a rezoning for 40 new apartment units next Wednesday (5/21). The site is an 8 minute walk away from the Belmont train station. More details about the meeting below!

Hyper local thing. If you live in the 'SLN' part of this map, please attend the South Lakeview Neighbors meeting Wednesday May 21 at 7pm. They are voting on a 5-story 40-unit apartment building at 1215 W Belmont. They've rejected it before, and probably will again slneighbors.org/2025/05/may-...

Previously, NIMBYs rejected a proposal for 59 new homes in Lakeview. Now, they’re aiming to kill the downsized 40 home proposal. 😠 If you live in Lakeview, we encourage you to attend the May 21st South Lakeview Neighbors meeting and vote in favor of the development! 🏘️

Monday evening in Chicago - so much activity going on at the lakefront!
