Occasionally I think about one of my all-time favorite line readings. Not the famous part that everyone knows and quotes, but the final sentence. Duvall says "Someday this war's gonna end" so sublimely that you can't tell if that fact relieves him or upsets him.

I'm a week or so late to the 60th anniversary of the single day in June that Paul McCartney and his mates recorded "I’ve Just Seen A Face," "I’m Down," and "Yesterday." All in a day's work.

In my latest at NO SUCH THING AS WAS: Dave Alvin's "Wanda and Duane" and John Prine's "In Spite of Ourselves," two songs, two messed up couples, two very different endings. joebonomo.substack.com/p/on-the-oth...

I had a great time talking with Steve Tarter at his Read Beat (...and repeat podcast about noisy essays, records, and some of my favorite music writers. Link in comments or wherever you dig your podcasts (Apple, Google, Spotify, and the rest)! read-beat-and-repeat.onpodium.com/episodes/pla...

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but also a reminder: freedom delayed is freedom denied. #Juneteenth #BlackHistory #FreedomDay #NeverForget

I see a lot of people jumping to conclusions but we really should wait for a detailed report from our non-existent environment, labor, and public safety regulators

In my latest at NO SUCH THING AS WAS I write about Ty Segall's new album Possession, a collab with filmmaker Matt Yoka that is among Segall's best. Plus: goodbye Brian Wilson joebonomo.substack.com/p/complicate...

In honor of McCartney's birthday, I listened to a solo-era playlist on shuffle at the gym, and I marveled at the many deep cuts—(I Want To) Come Home, Try Not to Cry, Good Times Coming/Feel the Sun, The Mess, Vanilla Sky, Dominoes, One More Kiss, Don't Let it Bring You Down, Great Day, 1/2

Helluva turnout at No Kings Day, DeKalb! Peaceful, nonviolent, and righteous. #nokingsday

The Dodgers’s silence about ICE in LA — and Dave Roberts’ feigned ignorance about what’s going on — is an absolutely horsehit look for the franchise of Jackie Robinson and Fernando Valenzuela www.latimes.com/sports/dodge...

“First of all, I want people to understand that I'm here to create for them. To create music for people so they'll know that I'm a source of love. And they can depend on my name.” RIP Brian Wilson

In my latest at NO SUCH THING AS WAS I write about a raucous Wyldlife show at a raucous Liar's Club, and wonder about the place of rock and roll in anxious times. joebonomo.substack.com/p/those-satu...

"Time needs another minute." Rest in Power the incomparable Sly Stone

In my latest NO SUCH THING AS WAS: inspired by @craigcalcaterra.bsky.social's recent musings on hometowns, I wrote about five songs from Maryland and D.C. bands that bring my hometown back to me. joebonomo.substack.com/p/i-know-its...

Love the teacher who says it is like sending a robot to lift weights for you at the gym.

ICYM my latest at NO SUCH THING AS WAS: I wrote about the Strokes and how I've approached them at an angle for most of their career. Cheers to my new subscribers! If you dig what I do at NO SUCH THING and haven't subscribed, please do, and spread the word! joebonomo.substack.com/p/gone-now-a...

I regularly stayed in NYC for month-long stretches in the early to mid 2000s, when the Strokes were seemingly everywhere. In my latest at NO SUCH THING AS WAS I write about how I've approached them at an angle since then. joebonomo.substack.com/p/gone-now-a...

I'm digging this trip. My first car was a '72 Datsun. I never knew it had its own theme song!

In my latest at NO SUCH THING AS WAS, I listen to George Harrison's 1969 album Electronic Sound for the first time, and discover an ideal place to do it: 35,000 feet in the air. joebonomo.substack.com/p/the-sounds...

I’m stoked to announce that my 33 1/3 book on AC/DC's Highway To Hell, which published in 2010, is now available as a Spotify-originated audio book available on their platform. It was selected by Spotify as part an initial group of 51 books in the series to receive audio treatment.
