What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? The Envelope Theorem is about stationery points.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? ceteris paribus

Repeat tonight of this, on Bletchley Park geniuses Bill Tutte and Tommy Flowers. Tutte was later awarded a Fellowship of @royalsociety.org. The programme stressed the rigorous and demanding selection process/criteria, and the illustrious roll of past recipients. Correct when first broadcast in 2011.

Here’s the massive, magnificent but very rare Octobasse, invented in 1850. To play it, the musician must stand on a platform. You can hear its rather alarming deep bass tone, and see it being played, at www.youtube.com/watch?v=12X-...

A small simple building of national significance. Farfield Friends Meeting House in West Yorkshire is one of the four places of worship that we recently acquired from the Historic Chapels Trust.

@gideonrachman.bsky.social shrewd on why Trump will beat Musk. But he’s wrong that this is a ‘surprise’ for Marxists. He should read Lenin and Gramsci. As Adam Tooze acknowledges, they are very relevant to understanding our era.

This whole thread is excellent. As Patton said “Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity”

Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio tried to give a press conference to announce his lawsuit against DOJ. Much to my surprise it turned out to be the greatest press conference of all-time.
