My office is on Brick Lane. Every day we push through hordes of tourists who are there to marvel at the exciting success story that is that neighbourhood, London and the Uk more generally. Building successful multi cultural & confessional democracies is one of the greatest achievements in history

Up there with the most cringeworthy things an advocate could do.

The spending review is a Labour government doing Labour stuff. The welcome investment in the NHS, education and social housing would never have happened under the Tories.

Visiting Lindisfarne, and reading about the campaign to restore the Gospels to the North East (where they plainly should be), but which the British Library furiously resists: 'Where will it end? Next you'll be wanting us to give back everything we took!'

A reminder that when the Sycamore Gap tree was cut down people immediately started blaming immigrants and teenagers... It was neither. It was two white Englishmen in their 30s.

So depressing that we finally get an informed, progressive prisons minister in James Timpson and all the headlines reference him being soft on crime. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

An anniversary worth marking. I'm sure we're going to see the very people who have trashed its legacy seek to appropriate WW2 today - so let's remember what was really fought for: peace, a more united Europe, a land fit for heroes (mark 2) and the defeat of fascism.

TANK vs TESLA "We've crushed fascism before and we'll crush it again" - WW2 veteran Ken, 98, in the tank

On May 7, 1824, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony premiered in Vienna. Though completely deaf, Beethoven conducted as his final masterpiece roared through the hall, introducing “Ode to Joy,” a timeless anthem of unity, resilience, and human spirit. #StayCurious #Skystorians #DiveIntoDiscovery

Can anyone with a highly trained editorial eye spot the mistake on this front page ? 😂

Something lovely for the weekend! About 40,000 years ago, during the #IceAge, this small figurine of a ‘big cat’ was sculpted from mammoth ivory. Thought to be a cave lion, it is one of the world’s oldest known works of figurative art. 📷 me #Caturday #Archaeology

Up through the forest at Dodd Wood, near Keswick this morning.

Every week I see trials for alleged offences from 2021 being adjourned to 2027 because we don’t have enough courts, judges or barristers to give people justice any quicker. Meanwhile politicians are losing their minds over a Guideline which - whatever the merits - will change nothing in practice.

A national treasure.

To mark publication day of Maybe I'm Amazed, I've done a long read for the New Statesman about one of the book's elements: the inhuman, cruel grind of the Special Needs system & how it's collapsing... one of the things that James's love of music got us through t.co/GZhqO6E13i

The pithiest summary of a lawyer’s function is to “do right, and fear no one” on behalf of their client(s). If, when threatened by the unlawful threats of an autocratic bully, your lawyer caves, you need to fire them and get a lawyer with principles and courage.

As @barristersecret.bsky.social pointed out in their book, the rules around compensation for a wrong conviction are perverse and an affront to justice. It's impossibly hard to *prove* you didn't commit a crime. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The sight of Rupert Lowe and Nigel Farage disagreeing over who'd make the best Prime Minister is the political equivalent of Charles Hawtrey and John Inman debating who should be the new James Bond. @skynewsrss.bsky.social

I find it a very moving image, symbolising so much (Plus Z not wearing a bloody suit and no-one caring)

Something lovely for the weekend! Marvellous Minoan cups known as Kamares Ware. They look so modern, yet they were made by Bronze Age potters about 3,800 years ago! Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete. 📷 by me #Archaeology
