"And so, for all the warm words, for all the good intentions, the summit has done little to compensate for the economic impact of Brexit." @anandmenon.bsky.social & @jdportes.bsky.social on the economic impact of May's UK-EU summit ukandeu.ac.uk/the-economic...

A short 🧵 on this piece by an ex Biden adviser in the FT. First, and most obviously, a lot of “left behind” places are short of the growth industries identified in the IS, which is an important reason why they’re “left behind” Not much in the IS for places like Blackpool.

Robert Jenrick has declared that he is an "Anglofuturist" today. It is not a phrase that many people will have seen in mainstream politics and the media. What does it mean? It may have two distinct and overlapping meanings to those who are championing it, such as the Anglosphere Institute

India threw it away with bad fielding, but Rahul and Pant were amazing, and I suspect they'll win the series.

When is a ceasefire not a ceasefire? More Starmer drama. And the observance of Daniel Hannan Day with all the trimmings & traditions. tinyurl.com/4rrn2mkx

I was on @mrjamesob.bsky.social's Dan Hannan Day spectacular on this morning, at 10.45 am. I tried to keep it strictly factual, unlike our subject. www.globalplayer.com/live/lbc/uk/

Voltaire, after visiting the Royal Exchange: "the Jew, the Mahometan, and the Christian transact together as though they professed the same religion, and give the name of Infidel to none but bankrupts".

Most literature reviews miss the point.
 Not because they’re sloppy.
But because they treat the literature like a box to tick. In my latest Respect the Marble Post, I carve out a 6-step process to writing a meaningful lit review: catherineeunicedevries.substack.com/p/most-liter... 🧵

It's here! It's finally here! It's Daniel Hannan Day! The future he promised everyone a mere 2 days before the Brexit referendum is so exciting, I think my heart may burst with joy when I step outside and experience it for myself. (Read it. You deserve a laugh.) www.reaction.life/p/britain-lo...

Important work by @johnspringford.bsky.social surveying what is known about economic impacts of Brexit There's room for reasonable people to debate the magnitudes & mechanisms, but the key lesson is clear ... Mainstream economists were right that Brexit would reduce UK trade & harm the UK economy

"Nothing happened but that was a quality over from both players." This is a fantastic match www.theguardian.com/sport/live/2...

BREAKING: Iran says it launched an attack on U.S. forces at Qatar's Al Udeid Air Base.

For my latest ECIPE long-read I analyse what the realities of globalisation should mean for nation state governments. First and foremost, publicly acknowledge today's economy in all its complexities. Then to identify government's priorities and role. ecipe.org/blog/modern-...

Excellent thread by John, once again proving that raising barriers to trade is bad for trade, and therefore the economy - compounded by the extended uncertainty around the Brexit process. Other nations should take note.

Excellent summary of the economics of Brexit, nine years on, in a new paper by @johnspringford.bsky.social. Well worth a read. Key point is that most pre-referendum estimates were broadly correct – not exactly surprising to anyone looking at the state of the UK economy today.

Stonking thread, that takes a detailed look at the automotive industry as a post-Brexit microcosm and finds that, well, erecting barriers to trade is bad for trade. ~AA

Pay varies hugely across England: in 2024 weekly pay was just £610 in Liskeard to £1,130 in London. Is this because high‑earning areas attract inherently higher‑earning people, or because the jobs located there pay more to any worker? Our new @resfoundation.bsky.social report finds out.
