As I get older, my sleep cycle becomes this absurdly delicate little flower that can be broken by the light breeze of a rabbit fart.

Rep. Julie Johnson to Noem: "Are you aware that ICE agent jackets are available on Etsy for $20? Anybody can throw a mask on and run around and terrorize people of color without any regard for the law because your agency does not have proper protocols to make sure your agents are clearly identified"

“The entire landscape of American science, research, and engineering are under heavy attack,” the employee says. “It’s really critical that we all speak against it and be unified in our opposition.”

University: Grow the grad program! University: Grad classes don’t count for workload! University: Teach more undergraduates! University: We’re not replacing the four faculty who retired.

“Science policy is not just about managing budgets - it is about shaping the future”. Never did I think a Forbes article would explain the dismantling of the NSF so clearly and expansively (beyond economics). The loss is profound, and for some of us, Earth-shattering. www.forbes.com/sites/johndr...

Excellent NYT graphic. In the space of about 3 months, tariffs on China: -- doubled; -- went up ≈ 2.5X from there; -- roughly doubled again; -- went up ≈ 40% from there; -- and now have dropped ≈ 80% from the peak -- but are still 3X what they were in February. www.nytimes.com/article/trum...

Trump reaches a “deal” to pause the tariffs he imposed on China. I guess all those manufacturing jobs aren’t coming here now, the tariffs won’t replace income taxes, and all the other amazing things they were supposed to do for us are over. So much for Liberation Day.

Katie’s amazing and an incredibly thoughtful scientist. The MSC is a collaborative and vibrant academic community. Living in the North Shore of Boston is awesome. A postdoc in Katie’s lab helped change the path of my career for the better. This is a dream postdoc.

It really is this simple. #TransRightsAreHumanRights

Pediatricians say that childhood vaccines are safe. A heroin-addled nepo baby with a brain worm says they may not be. For busy voters, it can be hard to know who to believe.

I got hit by some rather sudden and extreme financial hardship so if anyone is in need of remote wetlab contract research, strictly BSL1, do let me know. Currently scrambling for gigs. Plant, Bacterial, Archaeal Non-model Bioeng Custom Lab Hardware Turn Key Genetic Design Please repost for reach 💚

Science news is particularly grim this week. For NSF funding, 2 key fronts: 1) freeze on ALL existing grants (portal is down - no $$ going out, including reimbursements) www.nature.com/articles/d41... 2) budget proposes 40% overall cut & 15% cap on indirects (lawsuits blocked same for NIH in Feb)

Most academics in the US are paid only for 9 months, and get their summer salary from grants. NSF is the biggest source of grants for most faculty. So, freezing grants is just giving professors a huge pay cut. (Never mind the students & postdocs, or actual science) www.nature.com/articles/d41...

NEW: US weather forecasting is in worse shape than previously known, with 30 NWS forecast offices missing meteorologists-in-charge and about a dozen offices at risk of no longer serving their communities 24/7. www.cnn.com/2025/05/02/w...

Trumpty-Dumpty is defunding PBS. What he calls "bias" some of us call "facts Trumpty-Dumpty doesn't like."

About NSF’s new(est) bulletin - 15% indirect cost rates will kill universities. Apparently that’s the point. I am sick.

Less Deans and Associate VPs, and more actual administrative and fiscal staff please. Admin/fiscal errors cost money and oh so much time.

I don't mind paying my fair share of taxes, but I hate the thieves that make money off a service that should be free. There is no reason to have to pay money to FILE your taxes.

Colossal’s bungled wolf announcement isn’t a conservation win. It’s a sad reminder of how the offensively rich want to foist their vision of the future on everyone. My latest for @slate.com

There have been many lab leak articles in the media recently, but none had actual new data In a new preprint, @zachhensel.bsky.social and I analyze early COVID-19 cases sequence data that have been overlooked so far. These new data continue to point to a natural origin ▫️1/7 doi.org/10.1101/2025...

The thing about misinformation and the distortion of public health is that it desensitizes the public to the abnormal. It is completely abnormal for a measles outbreak to continue unchecked in a wealthy country with abundant vaccine access. www.reuters.com/business/hea...

Trump’s "science policies" pose long-term risk, economists are warning. Since World War 2, U.S. research funding has led to discoveries that fueled economic gains. Now cutbacks are seen as putting that legacy in severe jeopardy. MAGA is making a mess of U.S. science www.nytimes.com/2025/03/31/b...

Love this!

Just a reminder that when the Trump people refer to "Marxism" they mean it the way jeering segregationists protesting the integration of schools meant it. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

I bet the U.S. university system could draw attention *real fast* to the administration's attacks on university research budgets if we threatened to cancel the upcoming college football season... No money for cancer research, then no money for 🏈

Le Monde reporting that a French scientist traveling to Houston to attend a conference was denied entry to US after a search of his phone & computer revealed messages critical of Trump's science cuts, "which [says CPB] conveyed hatred of Trump & could be qualified as terrorism". Computer confiscated

Amazing thread! Here here!

Here's a super helpful site called Signal in the Storm that is automated to keep track of federal policy changes (EO's and Ed dept) and news re: academia. Also includes suggestions on what to do, and a faq's page about indirects, etc. Pls RT! signalinthestorm.org/index.html

Naturally-derived & synthetic versions of a chemical are the same chemical. Ex: formaldehyde, formula CH₂O. TRACE levels in some vaccines, <50 micrograms (µg) per dose. YOUR BODY makes 42,520,000 µg formaldehyde a day. (1.5 oz, 850,000-times more than a vaccine). It’s the SAME formaldehyde. 1/

Pet peeve: I hate how often ppl claim “all the researchers will just move to Europe/Canada!” You vastly under-estimate how little money there is there vs the USA- and unless that changes ASAP this loss is just going to decimate global science, full stop. 🧪🔭

“Illegal immigrant” was their first success. Now comes “Illegal boycott” “Illegal protest” “Illegal votes” “Illegal posts” Until the “illegal” is you. #3E

I'm voting NO on the Republican shutdown bill. NO on handing Donald Trump and Elon Musk a blank check to spend your taxpayer money however they want. NO on cutting funding that helps families put food on the table and crack down on wealthy tax cheats. We need to push back.
