A moment of quiet on this Monday morning. This is from Japan, a lake near Mt Fuji

Reread my (father’s) battered old copy of Slaughterhouse Five for the first time since I was a teenager. This is a novel that hits differently when you’re a teen vs middle aged. The parts that stuck with me as a teen boy aren’t the ones I found myself focusing on this time around

This week on the blog: the big iconic opening battle scene from Gladiator (2000)! This sequence has become the image of the Roman army for many, which is unfortunate because - for as fun as it is - it doesn't work much at all like a Roman army. acoup.blog/2025/06/06/c...

#caturday I’m not upside down, you’re upside down

Finished listening to the audiobook version of @chuckwendig.bsky.social’s The Book of Accidents. Really enjoyed the novel (especially the ending!) and both narrators, although I especially liked Xe Sands’ rendition of Maddie in her sections

Maybe my personal favorite of the photos I took during our most recent trip to Japan

Recognizing I’m far behind on this, I finished Dan Abnett’s Eisenhorn Omnibus. My first real foray into WH40k. I was impressed with Abnett’s work tracking an obsessive man, convinced of his righteousness, gradually descending to the level of his enemies… and the destruction this leaves in his wake

Tokyo at night. Two of us in the family couldn’t sleep after the flight so we were up at 4am and decided to walk around and take photos. Extreme urbanization—but safe—and filled with interesting sights makes for endless photo opportunities

Rattlesnake Ridge. Not for those afraid of heights or prone to backing repeatedly while trying to take the perfect selfie Amazing view though

Fireside this week, discussing the US system of officer training, with a focus on 'PME' (Professional Military Education) in the staff and war colleges. It's an important ecosystem for training America's military leaders, but not one the public thinks much about. acoup.blog/2025/05/30/f...

The weather system in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is amazing. Running across a bridge at night during a rainstorm, fires rippling and snapping in the wind, rain beating down… it’s incredibly atmospheric and well done

This week on the blog: The logistics of Road War in Mad Max (and similar) settings: given logistical and tactical constraints, how might we actually expect warfare to be waged in a post-apocalypse? The answer is...a little bit technical. acoup.blog/2025/05/23/c...

I had so many questions. Was there concern regarding a geriatric murderer on the prowl? Or a killer after senior citizens?

Update: our talk regarding not laying on the receiver did not have the desired outcome

#caturday Kitty, hey. I don’t think that’s great for the receiver. Yes, it’s nice and warm but…

I finished @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social’s Absolution. My thoughts collapse into single word impressions. Hallucinatory. Compelling. Surreal. Personal. Unmooring. Memorable. My favorite of the Southern Reach books since Annihilation and maybe just straight up my favorite of the series.

I’m a slow video gamer (just like I’m a slow TV watcher). Years ago I beat Elden Ring. The beast at the end did *not* cooperate with my build/skill. Well, I finally got Shadow of the Erdtree. I’m making my slow way through it. I’d say it has partially recaptured some OG ER discovery magic for me.

I’m reliably informed the cat is having Big Feelings today. Apparently said feelings revolve around kitty treats, or lack thereof Luckily, there is packing paper upon which to sit

It all starts tonight 💪 🆚 @pwhlfrost.bsky.social at @pwhlcharge.bsky.social 🕖 7PM ET 📍 TD Place 📺 In Canada: TSN + RDS 📺 In MN Area: FanDuel Sports Network 📺 Outside of Canada: YouTube + thepwhl.com

A few weeks ago I read The Bright Sword by @levgrossman.com. I’m a bit of a sucker for Arthurian stories but wow! What a ride and what a great take on what comes after the traditional tale we all know

Apparently my grandfather took one look at the exposed bolts partially holding up the Needle and refused to go to the top. That was 40+ years ago and the Needle is still standing, but I can’t help but think of that anecdote now whenever I see the Needle on the skyline

I finished “The Endless Vessel” by @charlessoule.bsky.social on Friday and let it sit with me a bit, as it deserves. I quite liked it, especially the ending. It built towards something and, I feel, delivered. Recommended.

#caturday Watching squirrels

Congratulations to @marthawells.com as Murderbot premiers on AppleTV+. I have loved the books and the first two episodes are great. Looking forward to the rest of the season

Last one in the Night’s Dawn trilogy, straight from my bookshelf. Dust cover on this one is in better condition. I understand the criticism that the series ends on a literal deus ex machina but Hamilton sets it up in the first book, so it has never bothered me. Love this trilogy.

Second in the Trilogy. I apologize for the beat up dust covers… if I could go back and tell teenage me to be more gentle, I would. The books inside are in good condition. These had to survive in boxes for years as well as multiple moves… so the dust covers have done their job, I suppose

Pulled from my bookshelf: old school cool. I read the entire Night’s Dawn trilogy probably ten times before I graduated high school and I’ve gone back to it again since then. Sometimes your favorite books as a youth don’t hold up as an adult, but Night’s Dawn absolutely does for me

Regal catloaf

I’m a slow TV watcher, and I fall behind the watching curve (e.g. current discourse seems to mostly be around Last of Us S2 and Andor S2… neither of which I’ve seen). But! I’ve been enjoying S2 of For All Mankind. Yes, I’m behind, but I feel like the show found its footing in S2

CATHERINE DUBOIS IN 4OT FOR @victoire-lphf.bsky.social!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there. Hopefully you can spend at least part of the day today relaxing
