GET EM BOYZ

The key takeaway is that people hate the GOP bill when they learn what's in it, but most people don't know what's in it. One of the most important things we can do is keep sharing and talking to people about the fact that Republicans are cutting Medicaid & SNAP to give tax breaks to billionaires.

Gov. Tim Walz is doubling down on trans rights — and criticizing members of his party who are retreating — at a time when the issue has become a political lightning rod nationally and back home in Minnesota.

there’s a valuable lesson here for democrats in that voters want politicians to be bold and clearly stand FOR SOMETHING but i have a feeling democrats will continue opening TACO trucks in front of the white house or begging for war with iran instead sadly

Trevor has eaten his Dinner in front of the Warm Tree for the first time tonight!

Reem Zaidan, a mother of 8, was killed while waiting for aid in Rafah. Her children mourned her at Nasser hospital. Israel killed 27 Palestinians near a food line — the third attack in as many days. UN says blocking aid may constitute a war crime. #GazaFamine #AidMassacre

I'm repeatedly struck that all the scenarios the critical data studies / algorithmic bias / smart cities scholars warned us about over the past 10-15 years are now manifesting simultaneously

"Everything in the world is trying to keep us from getting lost in thought lately." My latest newsletter is about why art and culture are more important than ever, and why the world's most powerful people are trying to wreck them. This is a huge theme in my new book! buttondown.com/charliejane/...

I’m not alone in this revelation or anything but it would be great if Democrats actually noticed Republicans aren’t getting agitated and defensive about taco trucks or raising the debt. They’re getting agitated and defensive when you point out their budget bill will kill people.

In a widely expected move, the Trump administration has rescinded the Biden admin's guidance on the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), which reminded hospitals they were required to provide abortion care to protect the health of pregnant people, even in abortion ban states.

Along with abandoning DEI initiatives, Walmart has been quietly scaling back its promises to reduce its massive impact on plastic pollution and climate change—two crises that disproportionately harm Black and Brown communities. New from me:

SCOOP: The first wave of DOGE staffers was supposed to be gone after 130 days. Instead, core members of the team have signed on for the long haul. www.wired.com/story/big-ba...

I’m going to create a new fad in sensory deprivation chambers and I will sell it for millions of dollars to all of the tech bros and the Davos crowd and then I will lock it. Oubliette™️

i am simply floored to learn this about a guy who held a nazi rally at madison square garden eight months ago

Some people are already saying “sure it might be illegal but are we really going to defend the family of a terrorist” and it’s like, yeah, even if they were trying to deport just him illegally, that’s still bad. Edge cases with unsympathetic characters are used to erode *everyone’s* rights

They're kidnapping kids dawg

The English muffin makes him not a New Yorker. The word order “bacon, cheese, and egg” makes him not of this Earth.

either these immigration tactical squads have ammo in those rifles or they don't, and at some point either answer is going to be a big problem

He needed air. The price was $539. When OptumRx dropped coverage of his $66 inhaler, Cole couldn’t afford the new price. 5 days later, he died from a severe asthma attack—with no inhaler. He paid with his life. www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news... #MedSky #SciSky #PedsSky #PulmSky

Yes a cheeseburger uses more water than one ChatGPT request but I do not have to eat 16 cheeseburgers in order to compose an email to my landlord asking that the screens be replaced

if you really want to scare someone with some sort of spooktacular it should be some other time of year. not on halloween when everyone expects it

One thing all philosophers agree on is that the human body is basically a car and the brain is a little guy driving it around

Tesla is about to launch its autonomous taxi in Austin next week. But the company uses far fewer sensors to run its "full-self driving mode". A fatal accident in FSD shows the dangers that still lurk. Story by @danahull.bsky.social & @craigtruesdell.bsky.social: www.bloomberg.com/features/202...

I've seen folks talk about how "in four years" they'll be able to get back to their planned projects and I really don't think that's going to work out. People & projects losing funding now will not be able to hit pause and come back once funding is restored. Hard-won progress & capacity will be lost

Alright, so media! Who ostensibly do journalism! What is the thing all of those leaders have in common and what does it tell us about Hegseth and Trump? Could it be that they are all from marginalized communities? Gay, Black, Jewish, Chicano, and/or women…

this is a genuinely unsettling thing to see an NYT writer say. it's essentially an uncontested fact that in the social media era, large majorities of people don't read past the headline.

thus has been escalating for years now at the federal, state and local levels. covering badges, refusing to provide names, procedural and legislative obstructions to FOIA requests. they don’t want you to know who they are.

Medicaid work requirements could cost the government - and taxpayers - a lot of money. Georgia found this out the hard way.

That's kind of a weird question for you to ask, the LA Times, as you are the newspaper and I am just a guy, but it means he's fascist and I do hope this helps

“My patients were six-year-olds with shrapnel in their hearts and brains, pregnant women whose pelvises were obliterated. Fetuses cut in two while still in the womb.” Dr. Feroze Sidhwa gave a searing firsthand account at a UN Security Council meeting. qudsnen.co/us-surgeon-t...

what the hell is the justification for this?

Defunding the police was the basement and commonsense.

New — On X the Minneapolis PD said they were only present at the ICE raid protest "to ensure the crowd and the surrounding area remained safe," but photos shared directly with me show Police Chief Brian O'Hara personally escorting federal agents off Lake Street where protest took place.

There are 53 Republicans in the Senate.

“Dr. al-Farra said that most of the victims were children aged between 10 and 13, many with gunshot wounds to the head or chest.” The @nytimes.com edited out this quote from its reporting on the mass killing of people at a food aid distribution site in Gaza—here’s the original: archive.ph/oeRCf

It might be strange to say, but I'll say it anyways: I loved working on this story about glacier loss? Artists are capturing glaciers through thread, glass and even sugar. www.hcn.org/issues/57-6/...

MURRAY: Will you allocate the $220m for literacy programs that Congress appropriated? McMAHON: We're looking at the unallocated dollars to determine which of those programs we can best spend on MURRAY: Those funds were appropriated. It looks to me like the dept is illegally impounding funding

Another dumb gross irony here is Harvey Milk served in the Navy and Donald Trump's Navy secretary didn't www.military.com/daily-news/2...

Pride Month is still Pride Month even if the White House doesn’t officially recognize it. The default position of Pride Marches for most of their history was in opposition to the government, who were ignoring AIDS, legally discriminating against LGBT people, etc. etc. etc.

We really need more reporting on how much time and productivity AI is *costing*, not saving. If you teach in higher ed, for example, or work in the legal profession, how much more of your day now is just spent double checking things that you now suspect to be AI? It's become a huge time suck.

OK, there is no way this is random. Someone do the math.

New, from me: The Trump administration is already making it easier for partisan political appointees to fire career civil servants. A new policy will also allow them to politicize who is hired into the civil service. The spoils system returns! 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-politi...
