very fun to read frederick douglass accurately describe the problem with the pardon power in 1867

As critical as I am of the current editorial direction of the Washington Post, I am grateful the paper can still produce commentary like this.

The U.S. government is breaking up families without an ounce of compassion. ICE is detaining migrants at court—asking judges to dismiss cases so they can arrest people as they leave & shove them into fast-track deportation. Word’s out: Show up, risk deportation. Stay home, lose your case.

When warnings of Insectageddon were issued a few years ago, there was widespread denial. Less so now. It's devastating. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

NEW: The mother of an Arizona man who died after being unable to find mental health treatment is suing his health insurer, saying it broke the law by publishing false information that misled its customers. By @maxblau.bsky.social

People so often overlook the importance of good penmanship.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

That would be awful. Don’t share this.

Another v good piece at @wired.com : TL;DR: No timeline promise Musk has made has EVER come true. It's always "full confidence we'll see this next year" I personally interviewed him at conf in 2011 when he was "highly confident" of *manned* Mars missions by NOW. www.wired.com/story/theres...

"Today we're going to talk about liars. Specifically, the well-credentialed, well-compensated liars who spent years telling us that Trump and his movement would be 'better on balance' for free speech, free markets, and the free world...They were lying." www.notesfromthecircus.com/p/the-well-d...

This has always been the GOP's strategy: 1) Cut taxes for the wealthy & corporations by claiming they'll pay for themselves. 2) Explode the deficit. 3) Demand cuts to vital programs that help millions. 4) Repeat. They're trying to get away with it again.

“In this environment, we drop the rigs and buy back stock,” said Travis Stice, chief executive officer at Diamondback Energy, which recently warned investors US oil production has probably peaked. “Every single conversation I’ve had is that this oil price won’t work. www.ft.com/content/2ca6...

This good news for people who want more Americans to drown in swimming pools.

I love how Rs are always given the free pass to 'not be informed' about what their own party is doing or the President is doing because they've been saying 'I haven't seen it' for 10 years now and that's good enough. Tweets, pressers, statements. They always look away for some reason and that's OK.

If you say you love freedom, but you don't believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn't freedom. It's privilege. – Tim Walz

For those of you who knew Victoria Brownworth on Twitter, she passed away from cancer yesterday. She was a fearless journalist who reported on AIDS in the 80s (when Reagan was ignoring it), lifted up the LGBTQ community, & rooted out corruption. Her wife, Maddy Gold, died of cancer in 2022.

I want to tell you about a cat. This cat, specifically. He was named Noodle at the shelter where I found him. I planned to give him a more dignified name, but I never really came up with one that stuck, so he became simply Mr. Noodle.
