The Department of Natural History at the museum in Trondheim is seeking an associate professor in vertebrate evolutionary genomics using ancient DNA approaches. Working alongside great colleagues including @museumevogen.bsky.social Deadline May 25 www.jobbnorge.no/en/available...

It's publication day of my first book: The Tree of Life. The tree of life is a time machine that can take us back 4 billion years to meet our most distant ancestor. It is the magic that lets us tell the origin stories, beginning with this ancient relative, of everything from mushrooms to man.

I’m recruiting a PhD student in macrogenetics at Dalhousie University 🇨🇦! Focus will be on the biogeography of vertebrate genetic diversity or urban evolutionary ecology. Full ad: www.schmidt-biodiversity-lab.org/macrogenetic... If the ad is up, applications are still open. Please share widely! 🧬🧬

A punk revival is overdue.

I was so fortunate to work with @rejectresubmit.bsky.social on wrapping up some work from my postdoc with @stepheniwright.bsky.social. Check out our very cool paper pulling apart the history of sex chromosomes in Rumex! academic.oup.com/evlett/artic...

I say this every time de-extinction comes up: it makes no sense to devote science to bringing back extinct animals when we can’t be bothered to keep extant ones alive in the first place.

We have an open 4-year PhD position in the Slotte lab at Stockholm University, to investigate genomic signatures of selection associated with pollination mode shifts. Full ad: su.varbi.com/en/what:job/... Apply by April 22, 2025 via the University application portal (link). Please repost! 🧪

NSERC Discovery Grant award results have been communicated to institutional research offices today (NOT an April fools joke).

I'm not sure why, but I seem to have been added to a couple MAGA-resistance starter packs. The people who followed me from those in the past few days are going to be sorely disappointed with my normal posts about evolutionary genetics and my dachshund. Sorry in advance.

There should be no question about this!

Recording the audiobook version of my book ‘The Tree of Life’. Out 24th April! It’s fun but very hard work. @johnmurrays.bsky.social

Fabulous university. I loved my time there. Okay, a wee bit of rain…

Apropos of nothing and in no way whatsoever related to current events at all… I wrote about how in nature, sex is so much more complicated than XX and XY. From insects and fish to lizards and even mammals, there’s an incredible amount of diversity.

A great piece in The Scientist by @hannahthomasy.bsky.social on the stunning diversity of sex determination across species. A fun read on why sex determination is anything but simple. www.the-scientist.com/sex-determin...

“ERC succeeds because it’s different. Its simple, tailored procedures allow Europe’s best researchers to thrive. Bureaucratic processes designed for other programmes should not be imposed on it.” @marialep.bsky.social spoke up for an independent ERC with a doubled budget today @europarl.europa.eu

It has been nearly 20 years since I lived in the US, but I still have strong ties, friends and family there. The last month (has it only been a month?) has been hard to watch from the outside, and I can only imagine how much more difficult it is on the inside. @eseb.bsky.social sums it up well.
