Great researcher-and-trainer-on-a-project position @uossocstatdemo.bsky.social @unisouthampton.bsky.social ‪for anyone who knows both their survey data and their big data. #surveys #southampton #synonymous jobs.soton.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx...

Reminds me of what I suggested would become necessary back in 2014. And every year of inaction has made the transition harder to achieve. www.hepi.ac.uk/2025/03/29/w...

We need more discussion about the way the ECHR has been interpreted under common law traditions to seriously weaken the relationship with Parliament. I doubt ad hoc tweaks will restore the balance. (Nor need we leave the ECHR)

“There is one policy option open to the Government which would lay the groundwork for a deep shift in how public investment secures better outcomes”. @jydenham.bsky.social‬ & @jesstud.bsky.social‬ set out 5 reasons the Government should launch Total Place 2.0.

I would stick by 👇: from a week ago

The language is good but unless I’ve missed it, few mechanisms for delivery. And those that are there are of the ‘we will tell you where, what to do and who to deliver for’ variety. Happy to be told I’m wrong.

“Total Place 2.0 is surely a no-brainer.” @jydenham.bsky.social‬ & @jesstud.bsky.social‬ make the case for this “over ready” policy that would lay the groundwork for a deep shift in how public investment secures better outcomes.

Strong call from Robin Tuddenham SOLACE and Calderdale for Total Place 2.0 www.lgcplus.com/politics/gov...

An eternal classic

Wonderful to hear Director of the Centre for English Identity @johndenham.bsky.social speaking on how to get a radical, mission-led government. #RadicalRenewal

Very interesting read. Total Place (originally implemented by ‪@jydenham.bsky.social‬ when Communities Secretay in 2009/10), could be a useful tool in the Government's desire to improve efficiency. Worth an interview ‪@newsagents.bsky.social‬ ? www.theoptimisticpatriot.co.uk/post/7848865...

Great summary of the case for Total Place. As the article says, there's a wide coaltion of organisations who support this. This was @instituteforgovernment.org.uk's contribution from earlier this month: www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/publication/...

I wondered why none of the local supermarkets had tinned sardines today. Not exactly a ‘canary’ in the mine but a warning of what is to come, perhaps www.thegrocer.co.uk/news/tinned-...

Cricket’s biggest problem is that the people who run cricket hate cricket. I don’t think any other sport faces this issue. Even the corrupt clowns at FIFA have a genuine soft spot for football.

I keep telling people that they should not underestimate the prestige the BBC enjoys abroad but nobody ever listens to me 😂👇

I’m old fashioned enough to think the BBC should be leading on what the deal is and what it means. Rather than the political claims from both sides.

Really interesting by @jydenham.bsky.social on Labour's soft left and its perpetual lack of organisation. journals.lwbooks.co.uk/renewal/vol-...

Whoever this para was seeking to evoke, Keir Starmer has yet to give one substantive speech directly on themes of social cohesion, or race/multiculturalism/integration having been Labour leader since April 2020 (5 years ago), Prime Minister in July 2024 (10 months ago) news.sky.com/story/who-pm...

What a week! Marked dissertations and pre-dissertations, re-examined a Masters, gave a talk about New Labour, talked that over with ex-Cabinet Minister John Denham, research brainstormed, was on a panel about Oxford luminary Olive Gibbs, refereed an article. Might get off down the pub. 🍺🍻

Funded workshop at Southampton on the topic of "Public Opinion, Identity, and Security in Europe"! Workshop will be held on June 16. Please submit your proposals/abstract by May 21. (Please help circulate widely!) Kamil Zwolski, John Denham, and I are the coordinators of this event.

Inaccurate to say "Reform voters are our people". Many people who have never voted Labour. Many say never would. "Some Reform voters are engageable" Lab should be interested in sixth of its vote [5% of voters] were Labour 2024 & would consider Reform. Few Reform 2024 voters gettable, maybe 1/6 are

The first two points contradict each other, and the last is meaningless. Great.

The debate around care visas in the political space boils down to people saying stuff like this - we desperately need people. It's a good soundbite but... A significant surge in care visas were issued since 2020 in response to sector demand and yet the problem of shortage has persisted. Why?

Our model of care provision is also hollowing out local democracy by drastically eating into state capacity the local level

Lots of deliverist talk from @teamlabouruk.bsky.social but what about when you do deliver and people still aren’t happy? In 2006 I set out to find out why. TDLR is about values. www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/essays/59007...

NEW REPORT: in 2009, the last Labour govt launched Total Place That aimed to better meet residents' needs in a local area by encouraging services to pool their budgets and cooperate 15 years on, there is a strong case to return to Total Place 🧵👇 www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/publication/...

If the government wants to boost public services productivity then it should use the spending review to launch Total Place 2.0. Services are already ‘double running’. That money could be used far more effectively and deliver meaningfully better outcomes in this parliament

Universities excel at providing access to debate - fantastic discussion tonight with Glen O’Hara and John Denham on taking the long view on New Labour in power.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us yesterday evening for our New Labour in Power event! It was great to hear @jydenham.bsky.social and @gsoh31.bsky.social discuss the Blair governments and what lessons might be drawn for our current Labour government.
