Dear God.

Thank you to @michellegoldberg.bsky.social for just telling the truth about #ElonMusk. The rest of the media should hang their heads in shame with the fawning, irrelevant pieces they ran yesterday. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/30/o...

NO.

Abominable.

Why has the UNC Board of Trustees has stopped approving *all* tenure cases in the College of Arts & Sciences? Without any explanation, this inaction by political appointees will undermine academic careers and threaten academic research in North Carolina. www.chronicle.com/article/at-c...

Kennedy, Makary, and Bhattacharya announced on X that they are pulling recommendations for Covid vaccines. They will no longer be part of the childhood vaccination schedule, and they're no longer recommended for pregnant people. There's a process for changing recs. It's not posting a video on X.

this sucks for me because i can’t get emory healthcare to *simply apply my health insurance* to $30,000 in medical bills which they are now sending to debt collectors.

lol I just got momentarily hysterical thinking about the fact that the New York Times got its managing director for communications to confirm on a Saturday that it is standing by its reporting that young women in China have tiny hands and this is why Apple has its factories there

“… peer-reviewed literature is dominated by articles supporting a zoonotic origin” while lab leak papers “are rare, fringe, and mutually incompatible with each other.” Correct. And it’s not because one side is “censored”. It’s because one side has zero evidence. www.factcheck.org/2025/05/trum...

The spread of Mpox in Sierra Leone is unlike anything we have ever seen - and we have been keeping an eye on this bug in the region for >15 years. Given geographical spread, 50/50 men vs women, this is no "sexual network". This could be the next one. clt.npha.gov.sl/outbreak.aspx

WASHINGTON (AP) — Harvard University sues the Trump administration over ban on enrolling foreign students.

We live in such a golden age of science with so much potential for discovery and alleviating some of the most severe human diseases. And we are going to piss it all away because … I’m not exactly sure why. No one has made a convincing case why this helps anyone, red or blue or purple.

I’m not sure what else to say except that like the many other actions this administration is doing day after day, this is heinous.

And this kind of collective shrug from people who say “what’s the big deal it’s just down the street” are why it’s so emotionally devastating

Tragic. Having to get only one shot that is more effective than getting two shots separately was going to be a huge step forward.

I was PREP cohort #1. Today was the LAST UNC PREP symposium. Watching Dr. Joshua Hall, who was the Director my year and 11 years after, give the closing keynote was 😭🥹 But what was built cannot be undone. Our community is strong and all 137 of us are not going anywhere 💪🏾

Striking. SEN. DURBIN: Do you know the #1 cause of preventable death in America today? SEC. KENNEDY: Number one cause…not sure what you're talking about SEN. DURBIN: I'm talking about tobacco. You fired the head of CDC’s Office on Smoking & Health and eliminated their efforts from your budget

Good.

🚨According to litigators, ICE just put a dozen men on a flight (which may have already taken off) to SOUTH SUDAN, a country on the brink of civil war, in direct defiance of a court order requiring ICE to give people an opportunity to raise objections before being sent to a country not their own.

say it again: 4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities ROI for NIH and NSF for local economies is conservatively 4x, often close to 10x demolishing higher education is economic sabotage

The next president has to do two things: 1) right the wrongs of Trump and go after those who broke the law and were corrupt. 2). Then spend time divesting power from the presidency and building real guardrails and passing laws like, “the president is not immune” etc. And get the money out

Everyone deserves dignity and equality regardless of who they are or who they love. On International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, know that Illinois stands with our LGBTQ+ community. Hate has no home here in the Land of Lincoln.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court rules 7-2 that Trump violated the due process rights of Venezuelan migrants in its expedited removal efforts under the Alien Enemies Act. More to come. From: @jaknutson.bsky.social

Excited my peonies are finally putting out a lot of flowers! ❤️

The burnout at the end of the semester is especially dismal this year… to everyone in academia…this all sucks. Prioritize mental health in whatever way works best for you. It’s OK to take extra time for that task and/or time off. We need you all here as the foundation for rebuilding US science.

Raw (unpasteurized) milk can harbor a variety of pathogenic microbes, including highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1. Here's what you need to know about raw milk at the microbial level—the risks & overall impact on the human body. asm.org/articles/202...

BREAKING: Attorney General Pam Bondi sold more than $1 million worth of Trump Media stock the day Trump announced bruising new tariffs on "Liberation Day." @propublica.org's @robert-faturechi.bsky.social @bxroberts.org have the exclusive story. www.propublica.org/article/pam-...

We’re baaaaaaaaaack!

The goal of biomedical research is not just to help and save those who are already seen as healthy, but to protect the vulnerable as their lives matter too.

NIH is allowing us to recruit postbacs and postdocs again. Please reach out if you are interested in working with us! Ad: genomeinformatics.github.io/jobs2025/

Trump admin files an emergency motion at the Ninth Circuit asking them to overrule the district judge in California who ordered the RIFs paused. It’s a motion for stay of the TRO issued by Judge Illston. 1/3

A USDA employee can’t accept a box of fruit from a foreign country because it could be viewed as a bribe…

The gutter racism at work in the Claudine Gay situation and the craven, wholly unforgivable complicity of the NYT in the stitch up I think will go down as a shining light example of how the liberal US establishment helped pave the way for Trump’s fascism.

Gross.

So let me get this straight: masks are bad and un-American if worn to fight a pandemic, but good if worn by people claiming to be government agents when they kidnap people off the street

This is heartbreaking and also complete bullshit.

Have you ever looked at a weather map online? Or seen a nice visualization of weather forecast model output? If so, NSF Unidata almost certainly made that possible in one way or another. Modern meteorological education would not be possible without the data, tools, and resources they provide.

OMFG. If there's any agency that is NOT top-heavy, it's NSF. Over 95% of the money flowing through NSF goes to awards.
