Dear Bluesky algorithm, please help us connect with cozy gamers who love: 🖌️ Pixar-inspired art styles ✍️ Beautiful wholesome narratives 🐸 Frogs 🍲 soup

The reason we make games about immigrant food is because food is is the first step in connecting with culture. People will accept immigrant food before they accept the people that make it. You can’t separate the two. We got to celebrate our game in LA this week despite the anti-immigrant assholes.

✍️ WRITER SPOTLIGHT ✍️ Please give a great round of meows for our next writer, @kathrynthehuman.bsky.social! Their writing is the paw-sitively the cat's meow! Please look forward to what they have in store for us~ 🐈

This rules for a lot of reasons, but especially because it dispels the myths that A.) old games were never political and B.) games like this are just stories, they aren't "about" anything. Should serve as a reminder to anyone writing about games why we should be close reading 'em.

Flesh, Blood, & Concrete, which is set in the decaying ruins of Soviet Russia, is one of the more intriguing free-to-play RPG Maker horror games I've encountered. It’s bleak as hell, but also oddly charming in its own catastrophically morbid way. digitalfantasydiary.com/2025/05/31/f...

It's very cool to see my essay about Tifa on this week's issue of Critical Distance. All of the essays included in the "Relational World" section, whose guiding theme is how games exist reciprocally within the world, are absolute bangers. I'm proud to be in such powerful company.

DELTARUNE Chapter 3+4 came out. But you're not reading this because you're playing the game... right?

"The juxtaposition between Tifa’s personality and her involvement in an active terrorist organization begs the question of how such a kind and gentle woman could become so politically radicalized. The question Kazushige Nojima asks... is much sharper: under the circumstances, how could she not?"

What's in a word? If that word is "femininity," quite a lot! Especially if you're translating Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex into Japanese. Read more here for one way that could go very, very wrong: storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/91a8...

The Final Fantasy VII Remake prequel novel, Traces of Two Pasts, hits surprisingly hard. I was impressed by how Tifa's struggle with medical debt deepens FFVII's anti-capitalist critique, so I wrote about it in an article for @sidequestzone.bsky.social. #FFVII 👊🌟 sidequest.zone/2025/06/02/f...

I got my copy of @silentprincesszine.bsky.social, and it's gorgeous! The zine contributors will start sharing their work soon, and I'm really looking forward to the outpouring of love for my favorite fantasy princess.

"The time-traveling zombies in Crow Country don’t allow the player to displace anxieties about an inhospitable future. The victims of the coming environmental collapse are none other than ourselves. Ultimately, Crow Country is a game about climate change." Read more: sidequest.zone/2025/04/22/c...

As pride month looms ever closer, I want to give a shoutout to all my brothers, sisters, and nonbinary cousins who are library gays instead of parade gays. I see and respect you while you sit and translate ancient texts in the long summer twilight (and I hope the handsome librarian notices you too).

Graphic Novel Review: The horror of THE HARROWING GAME dwells in the details The eerily detailed illustrations of The Harrowing Game twist gothic stories into broken reflections of cultural anxieties.

"We’re going to need a new kind of solidarity. One that stands for more than platitudes and posts." @unwinnabledavid.bsky.social‬ stresses the importance of solidarity in the current era of videogame and pop culture criticism:

Please keep making art. It's helping me stay sane. Every day I wake up to new dystopian bullshit and hate the world we're wading into. But you making stuff makes it worth it. As long as we're making art, it feels like it's going to be ok.

Long time since I last painted a character 100% digitally (Crono - Chrono Trigger)

Ben Whaley's Toward a Gameic World takes the serious cultural topics addressed in a key selection of Japanese video games and, with sensitivity and grace, transforms their analysis into an entertaining and enjoyable discussion. It’s quite an engaging read. 🎮 japaneselit.net/2025/05/26/t...

Yesterday, I uploaded the ISO image of one of the rarest videogames known to exist, of which a single copy is known to exist in the online world. After years of appeals, its owner finally agreed to share it with me so that I could in turn share it with the world.

Comforting Japanese books about cats are enjoying a small cultural moment, and She and Her Cat is among the best of them. Naruki Nagakawa maintains the distinctive narrative voice of Makoto Shinkai’s films, and this gentleness is conveyed perfectly in translation. japaneselit.net/2025/05/17/s...
