Physicist and astronaut Sally Ride was born #OTD in 1951. She was the first American woman and the youngest American in space. After NASA she worked on arms control and physics, investigated the Columbia and Challenger disasters, and promoted STEM through Sally Ride Science. 🧪 👩‍🔬 🔭 🚀 Image: NASA

I mean, I credit Pratchett with teaching me that one could expect the worst and the best of humanity (but often the worst) and yet never lose hope or stop trying to make the world a fairer place. Kind of "pragmatic pessimism"

Explore the formation of a star, as only #NASAWebb can. This 3D tour exposes the structures around the protostar L1527 IRS in infrared light. Telescopes that observe visible light see L1527 as a dark, featureless cloud. 🔭 🧪

A late #OTD post. Georg Simon Ohm was born March 16th, 1789. He is known for his law stating proportionality of current & potential difference between two points: V=IR. ⚛️ 🧪 Bluesky: Why'd you do another OTD tweet Me: Sorry, I couldn't... Bluesky: No. Don't do this Me: …resist

Going over my old posts, I found these fantastic #CERN sugar sachet pictures. Yes, a bag of sugar contains a LOT of protons ! #scicomm on #sugar

English Idiom of the Day: "When HeII freezes over" This is a euphemism for "never" because HeII only exists as a solid at pressures above 2.5 MPa, and even then only after it has recombined to form HeI, which basically never happens.

Happy auspicious New Year to me...

21 December 2024 Happy Solstice to planet Earth and all its residents. For the next half year, daylight gets longer north of the Equator and shorter south of the Equator. Confirming that yes, contrary to what many people think, days get **longer** in the Winter and **shorter** in the Summer.

Christmas is in 8 days. Just sayin'.

As we’re about to enter a New Dark Age one might ask ‘Why am I here?’ I’m here for one reason — so Hope doesn’t die. So we remember there’s good in the world and that we’re gifted with the miracle of life around and within us. Pandora let loose the jar yet we still hold its most precious bit: HOPE.🌿

Computer science pioneer and United States Navy rear admiral Grace Hopper was born #OTD in 1906. 🧪 👩‍🔬 As far as I am aware, she is the only person who has both a supercomputer and a US Navy destroyer named after her. (1/n) Image: Computer History Museum

Does anyone else whisper "no whammies no whammies no whammies" under their breath while their code is compiling?

Most distant object known to humanity. Found by JWST, JADES-GS-z14-0 is the most distant galaxy ever discovered. It's located 13.6 billion light years from us, and since it takes time for light to travel, we see it as it was only 290 million years after the Big Bang. 🔭 🧪

Thinking about this a lot of late

I regret to inform you that cleaning your place—including vacuuming, washing dishes, emptying the garbage and recycling, reorganizing and throwing out expired items in your fridge, picking up stray items, and doing laundry—is better than doomscrolling and will make you feel better

Diwali mubarak to all those celebrating! May light vanquish the darkness this week and every week.

The Star Trek vibe I bring to the party: I can't find a gif of it, but there's an ep of NextGen where they're hosting a diplomatic function and Geordi spends the whole time awkwardly hanging out by the food table. As an engineer, I've never felt so seen.

Remember to check your bass guitar for toads

AND. THEY. FOUND. MULTIPLE. WAYS. TO. SOLVE. IT. 👏👏👏👏💐💐💐 There isn’t enough hype on this one, y’all.

Parents, PLEASE check your kids’ Halloween candy this year. I just found atoms in this candy bar that were formed during BIG BANG NUCLEOSYNTHESIS, and many more that were the result of earlier generations of stars exploding as POWERFUL SUPERNOVA. Parents need to know about this dangerous trend!!

You’re not out of time, it’s still spooky season. Plenty of time to get out there and get your spookies on

"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" well, ideally I was hoping to be curious, research, create stuff and enjoy beauty but apparently it's actually forever triaging emails until I die. I hope this one wild and precious life finds you well.

“I just always assumed, despite the fact that the US hadn’t sent any women up there, or people of color, that I was going to go.” Dr. Mae Jemison was born #OTD in 1956. Doctor, peace corps volunteer, first Black woman in space, and the first astronaut to appear on Star Trek. 🧪 👩🏾‍🔬

Happy Indigenous people's day!

*older couple gets on the train* Polite passenger: I'll move so you can sit together. Older husband: why thank you! We're newlyweds, y'know. Older wife, playfully shoving him: yeah, 51 years ago! Sometimes people are good, actually

In addition to exploring the far reaches of the universe, #NASAWebb is used for science in our solar system, including this image of Neptune, with detail of its delicate rings and methane-ice clouds. Discover the Solar System with Webb: webbtelescope.pub/47v4JRE 🔭 🧪

#same

I've been thinking the same thing. I love being middle aged!

The Space Age began #OTD in 1957 when Sputnik 1, the first satellite made by humans, was launched into low Earth orbit. Image: NSSDC, NASA

🍯 🍎 Shana tova to all who are celebrating– may it be a sweet new year. And for us all— may it be a year of every goodness, with collective liberation for a more whole, healed world– community by community, institution by institution, relationship by relationship. We are how we will get there.
