AI is taking over social media, from posts to YouTube videos. As a result, I am narrowing who I follow. While I doubt that many of those who I follow use AI, I believe that as AI slop takes over more of everyone’s feeds, the further corruption of information online overall is assured.

@scalzi.com - I’m curious about what technology you use when writing. MS Word? Scrivener or some other writing app? And what else do you have by your side or on your computer when you write.

@karaswisher.bsky.social writes: “He’s so poor, all he has is money.” I think that sums up the TechBro oligarchs well. I will reflect on this as all of them demonstrate their values.

Hope Audible will still let @wilwheaton.net & @scalzi.com collaborate now that they're adopting >100 AI voices to narrate books. Perhaps they’ll flood their own market with audiobooks that wouldn’t otherwise get published? www.theguardian.com/books/2025/m... Very glad I moved to @libro.fm in 2024.

I fell while walking the dog. And I thought our political mess was a pain in the butt.

not that i take fault in people pursuing realism in digital media, but as realism becomes more real & infallible (speaking globally: computer graphics, sampled instruments, voice synthesis, "intelligence"), it's the impressionistic and blatantly artificial that speaks more to me as an artist

Feds renew their attack on international students (and higher education too). Looks like the new policy is worse than what was going on previously. apnews.com/article/inte...

Back from Fountain Bookstore in RVA, where I purchased On Freedom by @timothysnyder.bsky.social. Holding a small book reading about On Tyranny (currently NYT #1) in June & thought the new book would be additional good prep (in addition to being interesting on its own). And it’s indie bookstore day!

It’s Independent Bookstore Day! Going to Fountain Books here in RVA this afternoon. Just preordered the audiobook of The AI Con by @emilymbender.bsky.social from @libro.fm. Libro.fm shares the profits with an independent bookstore of my choosing. Fountain benefits again! libro.fm/audiobooks/9...

Counter-proposal: instead of wasting time arguing with people who begin by refusing to accept valid baseline points and by establishing themselves as the arbiter of what points will and will not be permitted, let's cancel student debt without seeking their permission or even involving them at all.

Yesterday, near my apartment. The little things in life often hold a great deal of wonder. Moments like these remind me of theory of endosymbiosis for chloroplasts. With this theory, the color green in plants becomes a testament to the idea that working together can create a hopeful future.

BREAKING: Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez has been released. This is the moment he reunited with his mom.

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

🚨A U.S. born citizen was arrested in Florida for entering the state as an “unauthorized alien.” His mother and a community advocate showed his birth certificate during a hearing in Leon County. The judge said she had no authority to release him.

I’m about to board my flight to El Salvador, where I hope to meet with senior government officials to discuss the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. I also hope to see Kilmar and check on his condition — and remind him that we won’t stop fighting until he’s home.

Trans rights and trans liberation now. Anyone with a heart or a soul is sick of this evil shit and how it's taken over the UK - not to mention it's the tip of the spear, as we've been warned by our trans siblings so many times. No forgiveness or pity for transphobes, in government or outside of it.

“It’s amazing that others in this room underwrote electing a man who, in the last week, single-handedly destroyed all of American science. It’s amazing how much good science you can destroy with $320 million and RFK Jr, very fast.” — Seth Rogen’s censored remarks presenting the Breakthrough Prize

HAPPENING NOW: At the federal courthouse in Greenbelt, Maryland, Judge Paula Xinis is set to begin a hearing on the government’s efforts – or lack thereof – to “facilitate” the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who was wrongly removed to El Salvador. Follow along for updates ⬇️

My two cats, Vita (calico) and Rosemary (black cat). They’ve grown up so quickly - and I’m grateful they’re in my life.

It looks like the Trump regime is trying to hide ICE flights from the public tracker.

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks can’t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until they’re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.

The congressional switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. This number can connect you to both the House of Representatives and the Senate offices.

Bone chilling. A court ordered Kilmar Abrego Garcia to stay in the United States. The Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that he was illegally removed. Trump is pretending he won the ruling 9-0. 1/ You may not think this case means anything to you. But let me tell you why it does.
