My entry to the Annual IPAC Dessert Bake-off. It had to be astronomy themed, so I took some artistic license and recreated Hoag's Object with cookies and sprinkles. It didn't win, but I think it turned out alright. I also included the ring galaxy found in the gap of Hoag's Object! πŸ”πŸͺ

While we're on the topic of biosignatures, I'd like to re-up my last two papers about the challenges of observing Oβ‚‚ (a key biosignature) on 𝘌𝘒𝘳𝘡𝘩-𝘭π˜ͺ𝘬𝘦 exoplanets with the biggest upcoming optical/IR telescopes ever built: ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2025AJ..... ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2023AJ.....

#Astronomy grad students, come work with me or one of my fantastic colleagues for 6 months! I'm happy to answer questions about the program and/or my #exoplanets projects! πŸ”πŸ§ͺπŸͺ

From Skylar Grayson/Cole Meldorf/Abby Lee/Drew Lapeer/Catherine Slaughter: NASA is facing severe budget cuts that would cancel missions ready for launch, put tens of thousands out of jobs, and set science back decades. We need your help to ask Congress to prevent this! astrobites.org/2025/04/15/h...

"Among the proposals were: A two-thirds cut to astrophysics, down to $487 million; a greater than two-thirds cut to heliophysics, down to $455 million; a greater than 50 percent cut to Earth science, down to $1.033 billion; and a 30 percent cut to Planetary science, down to $1.929 billion." πŸ”

Astronomy grad students, come work at IPAC for 6 months! Several great projects for 2026, including a few led by me! As a former visiting grad fellow, I can attest that this is an unmatched opportunity that opens many doors. Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions! #Astronomy #Exoplanets

Tonight I'll be remotely observing some M dwarfs with IRTF! I got to observe on-site back in 2017 to observe some M dwarfs for my dissertation. This picture shows the Milky Way over IRTF with the Keck AO laser clearly visible. πŸ”

Dueling press releases today for two exciting nearby #exoplanet system updates! πŸͺπŸ” GJ 3998: a super-Earth in the habitable zone added to this system with two previously known planets! www.iac.es/en/outreach/... The possibility of detecting oxygen in nearby exoplanets is a game changer. This scenario presents a win-win situation; we don't even need to detect life to succeed. It is truly amazing to learn how unique Earth is regarding its atmosphere within the solar neighborhood. I want to bet on the answer.😊

Check out this new paper by @kevinkhu.bsky.social, addressing a super interesting question - will future extremely large telescopes be able to detect biosignatures on Earth-like planets??? Here's the press release: news.arizona.edu/news/how-nex...

It took a while, but our paper has finally been accepted to the Astronomical Journal! Check out the updated version, which is ~5 pages longer (now with more figures and tables)! Our Oβ‚‚ survey yields are slightly higher after two minor code corrections. arxiv.org/abs/2405.11423 πŸ”πŸͺπŸ§ͺ

The fires in LA have affected many folks at IPAC and within our greater community. Due to this, we will have a smaller cohort at the AAS meeting than expected. However, we would welcome a chance to connect with friends & colleagues and to look forward to better days ahead. Find us at the IPAC booth!

Jenn and I co-chaired a task force for a report to NASA in 2021 (ExoPAG SAG22: arxiv.org/pdf/2112.04517). It's incredibly sad to see so many colleagues and friends lose their homes. Please donate if you can. πŸ”πŸͺ gofund.me/85e0c3cd

When one air purifier isn't enough to mitigate the #EatonFire smoke, a Corsi-Rosenthal box might (hopefully) do the trick.

If you’re looking for something to watch for the new year, I had never heard of the disaster miniseries (2 episodes) β€œMeteor” until yesterday. It has egregiously inaccurate science and hilariously bad writing, but is full of many well-known/recognizable actors (mostly from other sci-fi). β˜„οΈπŸ”
