Dear Republicans, Cutting science budgets has not historically been a Republican thing. For example, Lincoln created the National Academy of Sciences. Eisenhower's term increased the science budget 366%. Gerald Ford, +15%; George H. W. Bush, +30%; George W. Bush, +54%. Just sayin’.

If you’re a scientist with even a little bit of experience talking about your science to the public, I’d encourage you to sign up to do one of these. I can help. 🧪🌎🦑

We’re living through Trump’s conversion of the presidency into a global business operation—one in which family enrichment drives national policy. Foreign influence. Secret deals. Cryptocurrency grifts. Worse than just corruption, this is a blueprint for authoritarian kleptocracy.

TIL MARC records—the metadata backbone of libraries— were created in the 1960s by Henriette Avram, a computer programmer who worked at the NSA before joining the Library of Congress. Carla Hayden called this her favorite image in _The Card Catalog_ 😢: www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture...

Most Americans frequently use federal science information. But few are concerned that cuts to federal science spending could affect their access to such information, a new poll finds.

So much of what we’re seeing is this. It’s not outright data removal but the dismantling of the data stewardship systems within agencies. These actions will have a longer term impact and will be harder to recover from.

This suit rightly challenges Trump’s lawless restructuring of the entire Federal Government without Congress’s authorization. Read the details here: statedemocracydefenders.org/fund/massive...

The #imls is about learning. I want to pay taxes for programs like this. Not for the bs efficiency Musk claimed. A science program was poised to reach kids across Philly. Then DOGE killed the funding. www.inquirer.com/news/philade...

"This way of understanding the United States and our place in the world has a dark track record. It is unsurprising that one of the first casualties of the attack on IMLS has been tribal libraries." Powerful series of stories collected by @thomaspadilla.bsky.social on why the IMLS matters.

Before the election, I warned that there is no safe haven under authoritarianism. If they can ship Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a foreign prison—accused of no crime, with no trial—they can do it to anyone. Americans of conscience must stand against this now.

My adult daughter Rachel works everyday, pays taxes, loves going to movies with her friends, and listens to awful (IMO) music. Our U.S. Dept HHS has lost all of its humanity, compassion, and intellectual curiosity

Losing the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) would be an act of monumental neglect. I made a video about what’s at risk, and how orgs like @amlibraryassoc.bsky.social and the American Alliance of Museums need us to help advocate for these critical places. youtu.be/fYLC-KWy-Ks?...

NEW: ALA is going to court to stop the President’s attempts to illegally dismantle the Institute of Museum & Library Services. The President does not have the authority to destroy a federal agency. That's why we're taking action with our co-plaintiff @afscme.bsky.social. #ForOurLibraries (1/3)

This!

Trump signed an executive order that "improper, divisive or anti-American ideology" is removed from the Smithsonian Institution The order singles out the National Museum of African American History and Culture as problematic

I’m close to being able to explain why Extract Function is the most-used refactoring. Not sure why I didn’t ask this question for 30 years but here we are. #TidyTogether

“If you think I’m overreacting and sounding the alarm too soon, consider this: It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional republic,” Pritzker said.

The book "Strongmen" by @ruthbenghiat.bsky.social hugely influenced my thinking about autocrats and how they come to power. I can't recommend it enough. She just posted a 30-minute video answering questions about autocrats, and it's also fantastic (if depressing): youtu.be/vK6fALsenmw

The richest man in the world took over $5K out of this guy's bank account, claiming he was dead. The richest man in the world said he was saving money. He was not dead.

Anyone? Bueller?

To perform case-insensitive comparisons in Python, use the method `casefold`. Its purpose is exactly this! You need it because some characters in some languages are kinda funky :D Using `lower` or `upper` for case-insensitive comparisons only works if you're working 100% with ASCII.

🇺🇸 tells 🇺🇦 to not condemn russia for invading… "The Trump administration has asked Ukraine to withdraw an annual resolution condemning Russia’s war, and wants to replace it with a toned-down U.S. statement that was perceived as being close to pro-Russian" - Washington Post (via Marijn Markus)

True words.

Thank you to everyone who has joined the resistance! Our ranks grow stronger every day.

Captures it perfectly.

So the Trump - Musk plan is (in part) to shake down poor allies, gut cutting-edge research, make the government less transparent and accountable, and rewrite government systems at lightning speed with inexperienced coders who lack security clearance. What could possibly go wrong?
