Polar bear sighting!!

We went to a cliff with 60k breeding pairs of Brunnich’s Guillemots today. (Not a real Guillemot.) It was amazing.

Polar bear tracks in the ice. (No actual bears seen yet.)

This is a tiny iceberg that we saw today. It was really that color. Kayaks near it for scale.

This is the boat I’m on. It has about 170 people. So a v small cruise!

If you were wondering, the Arctic is gorgeous.

I am on a ship in the Arctic.

I once posted on Twitter that any white person who reflexively opposed antifa would likely have been opposed to the civil rights demonstrations of the sixties. People got VERY mad, but I was just summarizing the data.

And with all that talk on my feed and others about promo and sales and how book buyers have a lot of power in deciding what sells big..... Here's me with my weekly DIY promo! It's still pride (It's pride always!) Buy queer books by gay authors, even ones who are not me! But you can get mine too 😀

The thief has been found! His name is Guðmundur Pedro and Nettó gave him a bag full of dried fish.

I have just crawled inside a coal mine.

The doors of all the rooms in our hotel have weird (complimentary) burlesque-style photos? I love them.

I am a fan of breakfast in Norway.

It’s definitely confusing to have full sun at 10pm.

Augustus formed the Praetorian Guard to occupy Rome as a garrisoned city for the 1st time in its history. It was an unprecedented move & he at 1st hid praetorians in plain clothes in the city of Rome. So, no: fuck the Praetorian Guard & all people who imitate it to justify their horrendous violence.

The sign I made for today's march includes four of Woody Guthrie's New Year's resolutions for 1943: Don't get lonesome. Beat fascism. Love everybody. Wake up and fight.

Another reason to march today. March because Minnesotans can't.

Polar bear bouncers on the race course.

Finished the 10k. Got a medal with a polar bear on it. Totes worth it.

This taxidermied fox is in the restaurant in our hotel. I have named him Rico Suave. (I asked; he didn’t have a name.)

And his dog Dootie is really good-looking

I’m not going to any protests today because, well, I’m in Svalbard. But I’m thinking of everyone out there. Stay safe but tell those assholes to go fuck themselves!

A lot of people want to Be Helpful by warning other people of dangers, but sometimes what’s most helpful is letting people know that the risks are mostly in their heads.

Canada: *confused but trying really hard to fit in* ... One king??

I’ve seen a lot of hand wringing about the dangers of going to No Kings protests and gently, I want to tell people to chill a little. These are permitted marches and the point is to be out there and seen en masse. Please don’t scare off people who are maybe going to their very first protest

Okay. We have signed up for the 10k in Svalbard. We had to. There are armed polar bear guards along the route.

So, there’s a marathon in Svalbard tomorrow and we’re probably going to do the 10k. Daisie will run but I’m just walking. (I brought boots but not running shoes.)

Made it to Svalbard.

Oslo is great. (Not pictured: pile of meatballs and sausages. This is breakfast dessert.)

Accepting any suggestions about things to do/see/eat in Svalbard, Oslo, or Bergen.

We’ve been traveling and every time we get internet I feel like I’m in some kind of montage about the world ending. (Boeing crash in India; Israel strikes Iran; Sen Padilla getting shoved to the ground and handcuffed for interrupting Kristi Noem.)
