thinking about this article for no reason

Muriel Bowser to DC’s immigrant community in two parts:

This is an important point. International students matter for campus diversity, they sometimes matter for the bottom line, but they are essential for the academic research enterprises and the attack on them should be understood as another attack on research.

Bruce Sherman and ANC 3/4G oppose the end to reversible lanes on Rock Creek Parkway. They'd rather people die than have commutes that might slightly longer (which of course is taken on faith). anc3g.org/wp-content/u...

now that's a Chart of the Week (from @gelliottmorris.com):

∀x. international students ≥ x

TFW you get held up by another bike bus on your way to bike bus.

A HAPPY UPDATE! Mahmoud Khalil was allowed a "contact" visit—without plexiglass divider—with his wife and newborn son this morning before his immigration hearing, ACLU tells me, so I think we can safely assume that he was finally able to hold his child for the first time.

This is—it bears repeating—ethnic cleansing and a war crime. It feels utterly pointless to say, and roughly equivalent to screaming into the void, but the United States should not be supporting or providing any aid to a state that has ethnic cleansing as a policy position.

Today is the National Ride of Silence — a day where people across the nation gather to honor the many cyclists who have been injured or killed by road violence.

As part of SIGPLAN blog, @samps.phd (Cornell) and I started an interview series where we talk to luminaries in the field of Programming Languages. Our first one is a super fun conversation with Ranjit Jhala (UCSD). 1h26m of goodness. www.youtube.com/watch?v=goUZ...

All @acm.org publications will be 100% Open Access as of January 2026. When we announced this at POPL and CHI this year, conference participants spontaneously erupted in applause. The CS community is excited about ACM's move to OA!

WaPo gift links require an email address to access. I don't think that's always been the case. And it sucks.

Psst. Did you know that cities could just paint extra sidewalk space? 👀

NSF just cancelled ALL grants to Harvard researchers. That’s right - physics, astronomy, bio, CAREER - ALL. Professors won’t get paid. Postdocs won’t get paid. PhD students won’t get paid. This is insane! If they can do this to Harvard, they can do this to your school.

Join us for: 🚲-> 🍕🍻 ⏰ Gather at 10:30am Sat May 17th 📍N Michigan Park Rec Ctr 📍metrobar Ride : 3.2 miles. See you there #bikedc!

I'm a member of AAUP-AFT because my dues fund the lawsuits that fight the fash in court, they fund the staff and the training that help us fight the fash at work and in the streets, and they fund our locals so that we can build power where we are strongest--at work. If you're in higher ed, join!

Imagine the numbers if Bowser and Kershbaum didn't pull the plug on Connecticut Avenue, on Michigan Avenue, on K Street, etc. etc. etc.

"why wouldn't I use a car to get there?"

Your monthly reminder that people use the bike lanes—especially the protected ones!

Congestion pricing was designed to finance more than $15 billion in critical transit upgrades in New York City. Those investments will take years. But the parallel changes at street level are already apparent. Here’s what we know so far. nyti.ms/4mbuGg0

Reminder that the Ride of Silence is next week on Wednesday, May 21. Join me in remembering Allie and other cyclists that were killed or injured in dc. More details here: ggwash.org/calendar/eve...

RFK Jr submerged himself in an open sewer on Sunday. Excellent use of free will.

Just reminded of this letter I wrote for folks on the academic job market in 2020. Reading back over it, I can't help but think that "weathering the storm" might not work out this time around. Instead of life jackets, the US Gov't is throwing out cinderblocks. blog.sigplan.org/2020/09/10/l...

The first Democratic governor who sends their state troopers into an ICE field office to free someone ICE has kidnapped is going to be president in four years.

Folks, this wasn't a protest. It was elected officials trying to do oversight of a PRIVATE ICE PRISON. The ICE Gestapo apparently went for the Mayor after receiving a phone call.

What's the point of having large-scale computing failures if there's no functioning government funding agency around? Waste of a motivating example if you ask me.

When we talk about the "golden age of America," places like the St. Louis metro area used to have dozens of local, regional, and national rail lines. In 2025, we have 3.

I am so damn sick of loaded coverage of stadium subsidies. "The man who *could tank* the RFK Stadium deal"? There is no deal to tank. That's not how democracy works. He's not tanking it, he doesn't support the proposal because it's a terrible idea. www.axios.com/local/washin...

Hearing from a friend how ICE on Tues was hanging out near both campuses of Mundo Verde in DC, a bilingual public elementary school, but never attempted entry. Why? In part bc "10 parents at each campus" offered to take shifts of working outside the school all day. That's community right there.

Read my latest:

I'm incredibly excited to announce that I've accepted a tenure-track position as an assistant professor at the University at Buffalo! The PL/SE group at UB is already really impressive, and I am honored to be part of its continued growth

In light of the DC raids we want to reshare our ICE watch 101 graphics. Reminder to verify, document, and then report to our hotline.

Join me and others for the Ride of Silence on May 21 at 6:30pm at Freedom Plaza to honor and remember cyclists who have been killed or injured. More info here: ggwash.org/calendar/eve...

Friends in and around DC, please follow and support @dcmigrantmutualaid.org for updates on local ICE activity. Remain alert, please video record video when you can, and call the migrant solidarity hotline if you see anything: (202) 335-1183.

I've spoken with multiple Mundo Verde parents who tell me they're taking turns camping outside the school to observe, another likely deterrent.
