"That telomere phages are so prevalent means that they are a selective force, one that we know little about. We now want to understand how the telomere-toxin is secreted and also understand how this ‘telocin’ wheedles its way into unsuspecting bacterial neighbors” www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

If you have a background in #photosynthesis, N₂-fixing cyanobacteria, or photosynthetic biotechnologies, consider applying for a postdoctoral position in @photomicrobeslab.bsky.social group @utu.fi, Finland. tinyurl.com/4b4nvyn6

This was another good paleobiology read Cyanobacteria developed phycobilisomes to absorb green light 2.4B yrs ago, as iron-rich Archaean oceans filtered sunlight. Phycoerythrobilin gave them a competitive edge, fueling oxygenation/biodiversity. Green light adaptation may mark life on exoplanets 🧪⚒️

Very interesting review estimating that cyanobacteria were already prepared for aerobic metabolism before oxygenating the global atmosphere! 🦠🌍💨🧪

I'm beyond excited to share our new paper in Nature! We sequenced the first ancient human autosomal genomes from the Central Sahara, two ~7,000-year-old individuals from Takarkori in Libya, revealing a long-isolated North African lineage: www.nature.com/articles/s41... Here's a short thread: (1/n)

Delighted to share that @asm.org has met its goal for all of its 'legacy' journals (ie favorites like J. Bact, I&I, AEM) so ALL 2025 articles will be published open access. Thanks to all institutional subscribers, this is the S2O way. Please submit to these great journals! asm.org/Press-Releas...

In a new Science study, cryo–electron tomography captures the in-cell architecture of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, illuminating how the coordinated action of molecular machines drives life’s fundamental energy conversion. Learn more: scim.ag/41PWgYc

The latest discovery from the lab and great colleagues at McMaster and U Illinois, Chicago. Lariocidin, a new lasso peptide antibiotic that inhibits the ribosome. rdcu.be/efdha

Please spread the word! We have an opening in the Atkinson lab for a post-doc with a focus on the molecular mechanisms of microbial immune systems. Can be a fully computational or experimental or hybrid project. Read more and apply here: lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/... #phage #bioinformatics

How rapidly do oxygen & ROS cross biological membranes and what does this mean for their detoxification? Jim Imlay tackles this question in a new Perspective, which provides a quantitative framework for thinking about how gases interact with cells. #MicroSky onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

📢We are hiring : Are you skilled in microfluidics and fluorescence microscopy in biological contexts? We're seeking a postdoctoral researcher to delve into the spatio-temporal dynamics of carboxysomes . Join us in advancing the frontiers of microbial biology through innovative research!

We would love feedback on a new NCBI-BLAST service we are launching today: sky-blast.com Under the hood it's the same BLAST executable and databases provided by NCBI, with a replica of the NIH's interface - providing an alternative to the US gov service that's less congested, faster & more reliable

🚀 Thrilled to share our latest work from Zhang Lab, now published in Science (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...) We introduce TIGR-Tas, a PAM-free, compact, modular RNA-guided DNA-targeting system in prokaryotes & their viruses. More details coming soon 👀 #TIGR #RNA #GeneEditing #CRISPR

It's a cyanobacteria on the outside, fungus on the inside. Well, sort of. The fungus lives in the extracellular sheath produced by the Cyanobacteria, and therefore are not really true endophytes. But the cyanos do create the external structure.

Interesting
