"The government sacrificed sovereignty to get security & it looks like we're going to lose both." @turnbullmalcolm.bsky.social & @emmashortis.bsky.social lay out the problems with the AUKUS deal. "The only people we can truly count on are each other: Australians." #auspol šŸŽ§ theaus.in/4e6moCB

The parliament has lost confidence in Liberal Premier Jeremy Rockliff, and so next month Tasmanians will go to the polls. This is the system working as intended - but it is unusual for a power-sharing parliament to end early. More in my op-ed from The Mercury - linked below.

"Giving tax breaks to people who’ve got half a billion dollars in their self-managed super fund makes no economic sense and it doesn’t make a lot of political sense either.ā€ @richarddenniss.bsky.social in Yahoo Finance ā¤µļø

Australia, Canada, Norway and U.S. are responsible for nearly 70% of projected carbon-dioxide (CO2) pollution from new fossil fuel projects between 2025 and 2035. Also Australia - "we are a renewable powerhouse and should host COP31" #nonewcoal #nonewgas #climatecrisis oilchange.org/blogs/planet...

It's getting hard to tell what's satire. Thanks for the sanity check Richard

"You're not alone in thinking Australia is getting taken for a ride." Other countries are making a fortune from our gas exports, while Australians pay a premium price for our own gas. @richarddenniss.bsky.social with @punterspolitics.bsky.social 🧔 Our EOFY appeal: theaus.in/support_EOFY25

By now, we've all seen the video of Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) being forcibly removed and handcuffed for asking a question during Kristi Noem's press conference. But what Noem said just moments before the video was taken is "classic authoritarian red-baiting," points out @davidcorn.bsky.social.

Members of the crossbench have written to Deputy PM and Defence Minister Richard Marles, calling for an urgent parliamentary inquiry into Aukus. In April, polling by @australiainstitute.org.au found 56% of Australians support such a move.

ā€œSalmon farming companies should pay a royalty to the Tasmanian government for the use of waters which are ā€˜owned’ by the state government on behalf of the people of Tasmania,ā€ - Saul Eslake Our research shows the tax paid by the three largest salmon farms has been near-zero. More here:

While the media drone on about how hard it is for people with most than $3 million in super to lose some of their tax breaks, in reality the vast majority of Australians have less than $200k in super. The median for a 60 year old woman is just $158k, which means half of women have less than that!

Good to see @sauleslake.bsky.social calling for royalties on Tasmanian salmon - just a reminder on how much tax they don't pay #politas #auspol #salmon @marineprotection.bsky.social @tasclimateco.bsky.social

"Confected outrage at the very wealthy paying slightly more tax is misguided and misdirected." Great piece on proposed super changes by @gemkillen.bsky.social womensagenda.com.au/latest/dont-...

ā€œAustralia…remains one of the top three fossil fuel exporters in the world,ā€ said President of Palau #ClinateCrisis #COP30 #COP31 #auspol

Peak hypocrisy. Woodside boss attacks young people for "ordering things from Shein and Temu" as her company unleashes a climate bomb, extending the NWS gas export hub to 2070. Our research showed that emissions from the NWS extension would be equivalent to 33 years of Australia’s entire emissions.

A glacier has collapsed. This is climate change - our govt just approved a 50 year extension to a gas export facility - be afraid Australia #northwestshelf #nonewgas #climatecrisis #auspol www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m...

"Gas companies are the gold medallists in avoiding tax," @grogsgamut.bsky.social went to the Australian Energy Producers conference, and explained what you won't be hearing from the execs inside. #auspol

There is no gas shortage in Australia. We don't need new gas wells. We just need to prioritise Australians over exports. #auspol

In approving Woodside's North West Shelf gas export plant extension, the Government has put big gas ahead of Australians. ā€œThis expansion will do vast damage and deliver almost no benefit to Australia or Australians," said @rodcampbell.bsky.social #climate #auspol

So @albomp.bsky.social used his thumping majority to deliver Peter Dutton’s gas policy. What a gutless nothing. Proud day I guess for all those who worked in the campaign. Your values being brought to life!

The Environment Minister Murray Watt will approve the 50-year extension of one of the world’s biggest fossil fuel projects, Woodside's North West Shelf. Along with releasing 4 billion tonnes of emissions, this decision will result in $215 billion worth of gas given away royalty-free. #auspol

People still wondering about intent. Israeli minister: ā€œI say to the prime minister, ā€˜Dear prime minister, we must not give them humanitarian aid. We must not give them fuel…’ Our enemies deserve only a bullet to the head!ā€ aje.io/d9wxs3

One of the world's leading rock art specialists has accused the WA government of producing "propaganda" to support its view that Woodside's controversial North West Shelf gas project should be allowed to extend, labelling government-produced documents a "disgrace to Australian science".

Just gave a press conference out the front of the Brisbane Convention Centre where the Australian Energy Producers conference is being held. A security guard came up and took a photo of my lanyard to check that I hadn't faked the accreditation!

Other countries tax their oil and gas industries. Australia subsidies ours. Our research found while gas prices boomed in 2022, LNG companies made windfall gains of up to $40 billion. PRRT take increased by less than $1 billion. It's time to fix the tax loopholes that Big Gas exploits. #auspol

Think you might one day have $3m in your super & be affected by the super tax changes? Ok, you are 18yo, you just got a job - it pays... $150k! Give yourself a 3.7% annual pay rise. Never take time off for study, kids or illness. You will retire with $3,017,016 moneysmart.gov.au/how-super-wo...

Tragic to see the flooding across NSW. As these disasters get more common and more severe, we should make fossil fuel exporters pay a climate disaster levy. So that those causing the damage pay for the clean-up, not ordinary Australians. Add your name > theaus.in/fossilfuelco...

Holy toledo Batman - better run and check if my super is over $3mil - what a beat up #supertax #taxreform

Hilariously, the AFR is showing just how absurd is the scare campaign against the super tax changes. They give an eg where someone's super goes from $2m to $3.18m in a year! Yep a $1.18m increase. How much extra tax? $1,528! OMG!! THAT'S OUTRAG... err... oh actually that's bugger all

I don’t make make many economic forecasts but I’m going out on a limb for this one…I predict that there will be new investment in Australia even if we tweak tax concessions on super balances over $3 million…I think ive got this one :)

Wouldn’t it be fun to see the carbon offset industry get as angry at the fossil fuel industry as they get at scientists & environmentalists who call bullshit on ā€˜carbon neutral fossil fuels’ If we scrapped fossil fuel subsidies we could easily afford to pay landholders to store carbon #climate

Hmmm..was it the ā€˜AcTiviSts’ (scientists, independent experts, former ACCC chair) forcing businesses out of the govt’s carbon neutral certification scheme? Or the fact that the scheme is a legally fraught garbage fire that puts businesses at risk? Just so hard to know! #auspol #climate

Lulz the pro-superannuation tax rorters still wheeling out the line about how many will be affected in 30 years time. 30 years ago the top income tax rate threshold was $50,000. Oddly it is now $190,000. Bizarre. I thought these things are not able to change in 30 years!

There are over 4 million guns in Australia, more than before Port Arthur. Don't share this post, because doing so would "compromise community safety,"... ...according to the gun lobby. @australiainstitute.org.au 1/2 www.ssaa.org.au?ss_news=aust...

Richard makes a great point. If we scrapped fossil fuel subsidies we could easily pay landholders to store carbon.

"If this was somewhere else in the world, there would be a national outcry. "The pollutants that are coming out of those Woodside stacks are actively degrading the rock art surfaces. "It's incontestable." šŸŽ™ļøProfessor of Archaeology Benjamin Smith #savemurujuga #auspol

We export shit tonnes of our gas, we collect fuck all in taxes and royalties for it and we run over the top of the owners of the land. Keeping it classy Aus #nonewgas

Our fantastic Director of International & Security Affairs @emmashortis.bsky.social is on Q+A tonight! Tune in tonight on ABC TV and iview or the YouTube livestream: youtube.com/live/0BWTPIs...

Huge news: EnergyAustralia has acknowledged that carbon offsetting is not the most effective way to reduce emissions, and they will now focus on direct emissions reductions. Last year, @pollyjhemming.bsky.social explained how the government's Climate Active is facilitating greenwash ā¤µļø #auspol

The Aus's Dennis Shanahan devoted a column to @australiainstitute.org.au 's new report on declining media power & this was the best he could do: "the big election editorial has never counted for much with voters. To suggest there’s been a decline of their influence ignores the political reality." 🧵

Of course rich people are bleating about this change. If you have more than $3m in super you are super rich and just hoarding. You ain’t gonna live forever! Get over yourselves. Good on you Jim Chalmers. Stick to your decision. #auspol
