Herculean collation of >12K megafauna tracks, >100 species, reveals 75% overlap of critical habitats with shipping, fishing, pollution or warming. Protection targets not enough to safeguard megafauna. New paper in @science.org, led by @anammsequeira.bsky.social 👇 📸silvana-palacios,daniel-torobekov

Very much looking forward to talking about everything fishy and nutritious in Oxford on Wednesday. Many thanks for the invitation @petescarbs.bsky.social

🐟 My PhD's 2nd chapter is now published! Here I show how industrial overfishing in Ghanaian waters exacerbates inequalities in the post-harvest sector, impacting fish processing and trading livelihoods, as well as Ghanaian aquatic food systems more broadly. 🐟 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Great week with the @fieldstudiesc.bsky.social team at Dale Fort supporting their Marine Science Camp. Students spent time learning about seabirds, rockpools, plankton and even let me ramble on about coral reefs. Thank you @thembauk.bsky.social for giving me this opportunity. Anemones are so cool!

Fish diversity has changed dramatically on the Great Barrier Reef @earthdotcom.bsky.social www.earth.com/news/fish-di...

Hot off the press! This week's research 🦑🧪🌍🌊 🎣 Global small-scale fisheries www.nature.com/articles/s41... 🪸 Diversity shifts on Great Barrier Reef www.nature.com/articles/s41... 💎 Artisanal mining impacts doi.org/10.1016/j.ex... 🏝️ Reef indicators for island restoration doi.org/10.1016/j.ec...

Small-scale fisheries account for 40% of global catch, providing 20% of micronutrient intakes for up to 2.3 billion people and livelihoods for 1 in 12 people. Huge effort involving @fao.org & 800 experts, out now in @nature.com www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Another coveage by oceanographic magazine: "Life in the '90s: Barrier Reef biodiversity has 'shifted significantly'" oceanographicmagazine.com/news/life-in...

Excited to share our new paper: we reveal that artisanal miners making the transition from the mines to other forms of livelihoods in Sierra Leone are often “stuck in transition”, as they are neither gainfully engaged in mining, nor in agriculture www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Big paper drop by @reefjav.bsky.social ! Reef fish communities are undergoing substantial change on the Great Barrier Reef, with latitude and through time. Changing coral composition, not simply coral cover, a major driver. @lec-reefs.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Congrats @reefjav.bsky.social on a beast of a paper showing that coral composition, not cover, drives reef fish assemblage change over space & time. 28yrs of #AIMS data over entire #GBR www.nature.com/articles/s41... Not bad for 1st paper of PhD 🤯 @lec-reefs.bsky.social @nickajgraham.bsky.social

Great Barrier Reef fish reveal that large-scale macroecological patterns have changed significantly 🐟🐠 We found that changes in latitudinal diversity gradient & rising species turnover were strongly correlated with shifts in coral composition Out now in Nature Comms www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Check out our new paper! We compare indicators for monitoring the impacts of island restoration on coral reefs. Massive thanks to our huge list of collaborators, which enabled us to look at seabirds, nutrients, microbes, algae, corals, and fish! 🐦🦠🌱🪸🐠 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

A bit late but excited to share our new paper exploring how seabird nutrient inputs influence mangrove food webs! 🐦🌿 @entropie-marinelab.bsky.social @lec-reefs.bsky.social @iomarinescience.bsky.social Open access: esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Still hope for coral reefs. Using 28-years of data in Seychelles, we find reefs recovering 4-5 years faster from the 2016 bleaching event, than they did after 1998. Also, a reef that had regime-shifted to macroalgae for over 15 years, is recovering to coral. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Reaching out to the community on here. I’m in the process of assessing antibiotic impacts on a strain of denitrifying bacteria but first need to dissolve my antibiotics in solvent. Anyone got recommendations on which solvent is best to use that won’t have an impact on my bacteria?! (will be <1% v/v)

📢New Paper Alert📢 (and first chapter of my PhD!) We show that scale matters when quantifying motile cryptofauna on tropical coral reefs 🦀 Paper in MEPS: www.int-res.com/abstracts/me...

It has been great to host Joe Roman and discuss nutrient subsidies, invasive species, and whale pee! Excellent seminar today, covering his whale research and his superb new book - Eat, Poop , Die!

Great audience in the Lancaster Environment Centre for Joe Roman (joeroman.com) explaining role of birds and seals in fertilizing the new volcanic island of Surtsey, and plugging his book Eat Poop Die. @lec-reefs.bsky.social
