We are delighted to announce that the winner of the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize 2025 is Jeffrey Zuckerman's translation of Jellyfish Have No Ears (MacLehose) by Adèle Rosenfeld. Many congratulations to to all the short- and longlisted translators!

Everyone order $50 of Various Size Jars RIGHT FUCKING NOW

After two fabulous years, today was my last day at @deepvellum.bsky.social. Proud to have played a small part in this org’s constant upward trajectory, and honored to have worked with such great people, incredible books, and brilliant authors & translators. I made a fun hat and a lot of memes. 1/

While our disgraced mayor was kissing up to Trump in D.C. today, another mayor just across the river was arrested protesting ICE's unlawful operation of a mass deportation facility in his city. Collaboration and cowardice are not the only responses to authoritarianism.

A judge in Vermont has ordered Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk immediately released from ICE detention. Öztürk has been held in a notorious prison in Louisiana. She still faces the threat of deportation, apparently in retaliation for co-authoring a piece for her student newspaper about Gaza.

Columbia students in a standoff with campus police, after occupying Butler Library and declaring it a liberated zone, dubbed the Basel Al-Araj Popular University.

The only violence Claire was the one you ordered. The only students hurt today, including the Jewish students who have shown up bravely in the face of your oppression time and time again, were the ones you had the NYPD brutalize.

Vichy-style collaborationism will not save you!

Louder, for all the would-be capitulating university presidents at other institutions in the back

I think it's very important to note that when you want to run human misery like a business--a business based on rounding up people to ship them to a country they aren't from to work in forced labor camps--you're a slaver. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

It’s a month since the administration detained and disappeared a green card holder, a lawful permanent resident. We cannot allow this to be normalized or forgotten.

Interview with Avi Shlaim on his new book “Genocide in Gaza: Israel’s Long War on Palestine”. “I was radicalised in the archives. I was indoctrinated at school in Israel, and even more so, when I served in the IDF in the mid 1960s.” “I believe…Zionism is in the process of destroying itself.”

Nearly 1000 teachers, academics, and more are mounting an academic boycott of Columbia. Columbia "is colluding with the current U.S. government's project to destroy higher education and criminalize protest," they say. Signers include Noura Erakat, Marc Lamont Hill, Ruha Benjamin.

Columbia boycott: We call on everyone to sign on and demand that Columbia reverse all changes made in compliance with the Trump administration's harmful and illegitimate demands. Sign here: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Columbia University, whose endowment is bigger than mine own, is also the largest private landowner in New York City. Cowardice paired with unimaginable riches, society has moved passed the need for such rank institutions.

So it seems Columbia gave the Trump administration everything they wanted and more, including a new "vice provost" who will review curriculum, hiring, and leadership. www.wsj.com/us-news/educ...

My blood is boiling

Since I know everyone is following developments here - we just received this message from the Board.

I’m shredding this.

‘No Way to Please Everyone’ Says Only University Where Students Are Regularly Kidnapped

If Columbia has the choice to give Donald Trump direct oversight of its faculty, students, and curricula, or to die, it should die.

“A small arthouse cinema on Miami Beach faces the possible cancellation of its lease + the loss of $80K in grant $ promised by the city after refusing to cancel screenings of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land (about 🇮🇱’s displacement of 🇵🇸) following rptd intimidation attempts by the mayor.”

Columbia disenrolling a fifth-year doctoral candidate poised to graduate this spring because she was forced to “self-deport” by ICE should be a major scandal.
