"In Kenya, for example, the WFP will cut its rations in June down to 28% — or less than 600 calories a day per person — a low never seen before...The WFP’s standard minimum for adults is 2,100 calories per day." Just unbelievable suffering as U.S. withdraws foreign aid.

I’ve yet to encounter a single person in emergency management who thinks FEMA is capable of managing a major disaster right now.

The hotel I stayed in recently had a library in the lobby -- books you could borrow and take to your room. Truly a brilliant idea. (I started reading Kate Moore's THE RADIUM GIRLS, 5/5, incredible story).

Thinking of this @propublica.org reporting today about stillbirths of unvaccinated parents during the Delta wave, before CDC had explicitly recommended COVID vaccines for pregnant people and the damage the virus did to the placentas. www.propublica.org/article/covi...

UPDATE: Mahmoud Khalil was allowed to hold his one-month-old son for the first time today after a federal judge blocked the Trump admin's efforts to keep father and son separated by a plexiglass barrier.

I regret to report that avoiding screens for 2 hours before bed does help me fall asleep more quickly. It’s so annoying when inconvenient advice works. (What’s next, trying to become a morning person?! Never, I insist.)

🤖 Artificial intelligence is being used in newsrooms to publish error-ridden stories with no human oversight. But journalists are drawing the line. Guild members have won enforceable AI protections in over 35 union contracts — one of the only national frameworks for AI accountability.

I'm calling on management to change their minds. Stop blocking Stewards from PIP meetings. We're not backing down. open.spotify.com/playlist/5tl...

"If you take a clear-eyed look at what climate change means for life on this planet, Ram and Oltman ask, what’s the sane thing to do?" Fascinating. I have a long train ride this weekend so I guess I'm downloading this! grist.org/culture/sabo...

Three colleagues are being placed on PIPs today, and @propublica.org management has refused to allow stewards in those meetings. We're not shutting up about this — our colleagues deserve better and we're extremely disappointed in management for denying us this basic union right.

I left my job at ProPublica about a month ago. Here's why: I've teamed up with @mantzarlis.com to launch indicator.media, a new publication dedicated to exposing digital deception and to equipping professionals and the public with knowledge and skills to investigate it. Sign up for free below!

Standing in awe of the @propublica.org team helmed by @jenniferberryhawes.bsky.social that pulled off this journalistic feat: a stunning narrative that painstakingly captures Helene’s tragedies and NC’s missed opportunities. www.propublica.org/article/hurr.... www.propublica.org/article/hurr...

I love working at ProPublica, but I do not love this union busting of stewards happening. As a shop steward for our Guild, I find it absolutely inappropriate that management is refusing to allow me be present with my colleague who is receiving a PIP.

I really hope management changes their mind and does the right thing. We're not asking for the moon here — having stewards in these meetings is a basic union right.

“Employees are requested to please notify” the EPA or the Office of Personnel Management “of any other agency office, sub-unit, personnel position description, contract, or program focusing exclusively on DEI.” Nobody used the tip line.

Sesame Street is officially UNION! Workers at Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind Sesame Street, have voted 55-19 to join @opeiulocal153.bsky.social Huge congrats to @sesameworkersunion.bsky.social! “We can officially say that today, May 15th, is brought to you by the letter U!”

ICE pretended to arrest a 21 yo in order to force her to call her undocumented mother to come leave the house (where she was safe from ICE arrest) to care for her baby. When the mother came, she was abducted and the daughter was suddenly of no interest to ICE. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

Jabbi’s top deputy, Hassan Jallow, told ProPublica he saw Cromer’s message as a veiled threat: If Starlink doesn’t get its license, the U.S. could cut off the desperately needed funds. “The implication was that they were connected,” Jallow said. My colleagues went to Gambia to report this 🤯 story:

The GOP’s “big beautiful bill” includes a clause giving Donald Trump the ability to revoke the tax-exempt status of any group the Treasury Department says is a terrorism supporter. The bill is in the reconciliation process, meaning it only requires a simple majority in the House and Senate to pass.

Cairo/Geneva/Jerusalem---The risk of famine in #Gaza is increasing with the deliberate withholding of humanitarian aid, including food, in the ongoing blockade, per @who.int "This is one of the world’s worst hunger crises, unfolding in real time." www.who.int/news/item/12...

Rümeysa Öztürk was ordered released by a federal judge in the latest setback for the Trump administration's effort to deport noncitizen activists it accuses of antisemitism.

Just a few days after Columbia announces the Pulitzers, the university goes and suspends its own student journalists.

Hey this is extremely not cool, just in case you didn’t know.

This is incredible. This computer science professor makes his students play a game that simulates the risks and repercussions of getting Long COVID, and then he's like, hey anybody want a mask? And: "approximately 95 to 100% of students who’ve played the game now wear masks in his classroom."

1/ 🚨 Yesterday, @propublica.org management confirmed that it will again deny steward representation at disciplinary meetings. Our full statement 👇

"The Washington attorney general’s allegation that the Trump administration violated a court order comes as the country lurches toward a constitutional crisis" Yes, this is the big deal, and @anniewaldman.bsky.social has the receipts

Amid all the other news, it's easy to become inured to the basic facts here. Öztürk: -Is not accused of committing any crime -Is nonviolent -Was in this country legally -Merely engaged in speech that the administration objects to -Has been locked up for six weeks

Amber Thurman Candi Miller Josseli Barnica Porsha Ngumezi Nevaeh Crain Their deaths could've been prevented. Their lives should not be forgotten.

Solidarity with @propublicaguild.bsky.social colleagues. News organizations that tout ideals of fairness, transparency and holding power accountable should not be surprised when their employees demand those values in their workplace.

I believe in ProPublica’s mission, and in my amazing coworkers who uphold those values every day. I hope that management will agree to our requests for basic union rights, like allowing stewards in performance meetings that could lead to discipline.

One of the many reasons why I'm so nervous about peak wildfire/hurricane season. Emergency management is already a mess, in need of more $, staffing, training, reform. @kendrawrites.com on what Trump's immigration + tariff policies will mean:

I'm so proud of the work we do @propublica.org every day. And I signed this letter because we deserve a fair union contract with basic rights — like allowing stewards in performance meetings that could lead to discipline, and a standard approach to just cause.

I love this show! also the fashion is incredible. It’s what I watch when I need to feel less despondent about anything and everything.

Please highlight this story. ICE stormed into the wrong house, trashed the place, and made women/girls stand outside in the rain in their underwear. ICE also stole phones, laptops, and cash savings from the family, who moved to OKC two weeks ago. kfor.com/news/local/w...

NEW: A top official in the Department of Labor this week informed all staff members that they could face criminal charges if they speak to journalists, former employees or others about agency business.

@fastlerner.bsky.social: What if the courts find in your favor, but the administration doesn’t abide by their decision? Is that something that keeps you up at night? Dillen: I worry very much about losing the rule of law in this country. Q: Are you sleeping well? Dillen: No.

scoop: NPR is mobilizing. In response to White House plan to rescind federal funding, NPR tells member stations it is pushing up its timeline. "We strongly urge you to communicate and meet with your Members of Congress this week."
