[shameless self-promo mode while still looking for a job] Anyone want to invite me to give a keynote-style lecture on the role of national/research libraries in an AI-laden world? It's probably the best talk I've written in years and I'd love it to reach a wider audience than it got last week.

My more optimistic take on the whole “did the protests do anything” debate is that here is value to showing you are not alone and that a massive number of people are willing to come out and be public even in very far right areas. Organization takes time and a diversity of tactics is a positive.

(Printing to deal w/how horrifying this language & related executive actions are re:desired eradifcation of trans people & immigrants: bsky.app/profile/erin...)

Don Jr: "The radical transgender movement is per capita the most violent domestic terror threat if not in America, probably the entire world."

1. Trump has promised harsher ICE crackdowns on Truth Social. He blamed transgender people as the reason such crackdowns must happen. Particularly, he used the phrase "transgender for everybody," a phrase he has increasingly used to justify anything he wants. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Genuinely, what does it mean to call for less "inflamed" rhetoric when the President of the United States is a pyromaniac with unlimited stores of molotov cocktails?

"Are you a tool of capital?" 😂🤯

Today we launched a small service on JSTOR to help expert researchers get bulk access to bibliographic data and full text content. A fun part: you can go download 12M+ metadata records bulk in one file, right now: www.jstor.org/ta-support

"I have spent the past four years traveling across all 48 lower U.S. states to more than 150 [craft schools].... Each site of craft education I visited had its own unique slant on place, pedagogy, and the people who taught and learned there."

(The type namesakes, Maple and Rocky; they are buddies)

Printed specimens (1 of every character aka "sort" so you can see what using a typeface will look like) of 2 of my personal letterpress wood type sets & gave them local pet names: Cooper Maple, Rocky Gothic (HT @shane.logoff.website for 3D printed green angled furniture in 1st pic!)

Quick letterpress print because some horrible person keeps using this phrase but it's got "heavy into transgenderism" "you don't know how rad that sounds" vibes #DHmakes (re: even a stopped clock shows the right time twice/day)

@msnbc.com reporter at the 1:15 mark. “The chaos you’re seeing is not the result of peaceful protestors, it’s the result of actions of law enforcement, specifically the Los Angeles sheriff’s department.” #nokings

Read the thread up and down, but this one is important. 🧵

It doesn't take bravery to do scary things when you're not scared, only when you're scared.

Hot pink version. Grabbing the alt text from my notes, though, realized I somehow replaced "collective action" with "conviction" in the quote, which is a dilution & a shame. Sigh.

Almost done w/this print. Layering black over yellow-orange hid the grey spots from the uncleanably dirty type. And I found where the "s" missing from "requires" went, lol (it dropped to make "boths" on line below). Going to print it where it belongs & print over that erroneous "s" (w/a big period?)

Still surprised how soothing and engrossing typesetting little bits of metal is

Thanks to folks who shared ideas—I'm looking forward to doing these as ways to test out a couple different presses at work and home.

Today I'm typesetting a mashup of Warde's "This is a Printing-Office" ("refuge of all the arts" etc) + Sandia Nat'l Labs' "this is not a place of honor" label text for nuclear sites (written to best stay understandable to future generations who might think security=treasure) + my own writing +

Last quiet weekend morning working in the printshop before it closes for good. Goal was getting to do this weekly once I reached this point of allowed to use the Vandercook w/o someone around, but am content I got the good time I did. Next weekend: getting to serious work on my home press setup.

I go to bed tonight proud to know how many people are willing to stand up for what’s right — and how few are willing to rally for his hate. Night, all, and let us try to be good to one another — and ourselves.

A veteran. Going to the VA.

I get so tired of all the ways pundits talk around Democrats’ real problem, which is so obvious that an entire industry exists to obfuscate it. They cannot describe, let alone attack, the real sources of injustice in this country because to do so would indict themselves and their donors.

I don’t mean to imply that I’m an expert on any of this, but I do know this: it’s really, really important that you take the energy you ignited at the protests today and put it into an organized group that continues fighting. Please find a group of people you can continue to do this with.

This is as close as I've seen the mainstream media come today to acknowledging that the cops are rioting.

#DHmakes: keep on:

Specimen print (1 of every character) for my 1st attempt at lasercutting moveable type. Line thickness inconsistencies=Illustrator issue w/font's particular inline style I know how to fix; gluing straight+same margins=hard, but carving type+mount from same (thinner) sheet should fix #DHmakes
