This is just beyond belief. Just posting for anyone who thought science was non political. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/03/c...

Ok, holy shit, there is a LOT more to this story than was initially reported. Joss wasn't shot in a "dispute between neighbors": he was shot *saving his newlywed husband* from a *premeditated murder* that was actually a follow-up to an act of arson earlier this year. Both homophobic hate crimes.

“Thousands of newly obtained documents show” that the founders of Clearview AI—which is backed by Peter Thiel—“always intended to target immigrants & the political left. Now their digital dragnet is in the hands of the Trump admin.” This is incredible reporting by @lukeobrien.bsky.social, 4/2025 1/

It's fascinating to watch people pretend that regulating a new industry built on wholesale theft is just so gosh darn complicated, tying themselves in knots to avoid admitting that corporations are just stealing content, content they agree is so valuable they couldn't make their products without it.

A group of Labour MPs, peers and supporters write: “We should legislate to root out DEI in hiring practices, sentencing decisions and wherever else we find it in our public bodies.” Devastated to see how quickly this has arrived in the UK mainstream. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Newcastle University goes from 'Raising the Bar' to a doom loop of redundancies, course closures and failure. It's hard to see any future for UK HE except as a narrowly-focussed credentialling arm of the tech sector.

Newcastle University staff invited to a ‘Doodling for Wellbeing’ session (‘Let your pen dance across the page' in 'a perfect escape from the everyday hustle and bustle'. Invites sent on same day 153 academics were informed of their location in 'redundancy pools', with 38 redundancies planned. 1/2

Trump’s HHS is canceling a contract to develop an mRNA bird flu vaccine, even as the disease continues to spread through dairy cows across the U.S. Make no mistake: delaying the development of this vaccine puts people’s lives at risk.

My view has always been that flags and nationalism are for football fans, children and dickheads, and the thing that won me over to Scottish independence is basically the same thing that makes a fox caught in a snare stop and ask itself: do I really need *four* legs.

I'm at a loss for words, except to say that we are witnessing the most absolute evil.

Big Tech billionaires dominate our media landscape — and now they want to take over our financial system. Thanks to Senate Republicans' crypto bill, these billionaires may be allowed to issue their own private currencies that wouldn't be subject to government oversight. This is oligarchy.

I find this the single most infuriating line pushed by AI promoters, which is saying a lot. But the argument that you can ignore laws if following them would stop you from doing what you want to do is an argument taken seriously in no other context I can think of

“Tories would be fools to fall for Boris Johnson again” Well they are, so they might… But for the rest of us, it would be like being offered a stinking piece of rubbish that we’d watched them get out of the bin, dust off and put back on the plate. Forget it. www.thetimes.com/comment/colu...

Every.single.word. @nesrinemalik.bsky.social has everyone's back against the wall.

America cannot long remain free, nor first among nations, if it becomes the kind of place where universities are dismantled because they don't align politically with the current head of the government.

Each and every terrible university IT system (and most of them are eye-wateringly bad at their stated purpose) achieves cost savings only at the expense of displacing administrative work into academic time, and enabling one single administrator to run it.

The really shameful thing about some of Trump's policies is he saw them in the UK first. Yes, it's a more vicious and targeted deployment, but revoking overseas student accreditation, threats to 'offshore' asylum seekers - all ideas from UK governments. #Harvard

Idly looking up our major franchise partner. Here’s its address listen on Companies House, and the serviced office space listed on its own website. Entirely reassuring.

Holding his newborn child for the first time after 2 and a half months of confinement—for what? Attending protests. In a country that supposedly has a First Amendment. The cruelty is just staggering.

After 35 years of teaching history in New Hampshire, John Dube left the state he called home—driven out by threats and censorship under a law that bans the teaching of “divisive concepts” in schools. He refused to stop teaching the truth. Now he’s starting over in Vermont.

Last year my wife had breast cancer and a double mastectomy. This morning, for the first time ever, she was challenged in the changing rooms at the swimming pool. Her breasts were not what make her a woman - but, breasts or not, she is entitled to dignity and protection from vigilantes.

Nice to have a solid argument backing something so obvious.

Whenever you hear conservative politicians preach from the gospel of "fiscal responsibility," remember that one of the biggest drivers of deficits lately are the Bush and Trump tax cuts, which have added nearly $10 trillion to the national debt.
