Starting soon: "Integration of variable renewables in electricity markets", at the Complutense Institute for International Studies - ICEI in Madrid.

I'm back in Graz to present at my PhD alma mater Uni Graz - Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change about Variable Renewables Are Not Variable So good to meet old friends in this lovely town!

The Spanish system operator (Red Eléctrica Española) confirmed that the real-time data was wrong and actually all generation fell to zero during the blackout.

Blackout in Spain and this is the info of the official system operator:

Just posted updated version of our DID textbook! We now have drafts of all chapters, including the one on general designs! Now you can tell your friends still on X that they are DID-outdated :-) Happy easter for those of you that celebrate it. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

🏆 Research integrity consultant and image forensics expert @elisabethbik.bsky.social has uncovered fraudulent data in over 7,600 scientific papers and exposed the practices of ‘paper mills’ that produce counterfeit scientific articles. She is honoured with the €200K Individual Award. Congrats!

The single most important laboratory in climate science, the tool that is telling us the story of our time, is now in the MAGA crosshairs. Not surprising. But sad, stupid, and tragic in the saddest and stupidest and most tragic way.

After a long wait, the working paper for the Many-Economists Project: The Sources of Researcher Variation in Economics. We had 146 teams perform the same research three times, each time with less freedom. What source of freedom leads to different choices and results? papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Personal news: just became Associate Professor at Yonsei - Mirae

Here are some cool animations I made a couple years ago for teaching DAG-based causal inference Confounding!

We streamlined six new DID-like estimators and created this tutorial for implementation in R. yiqingxu.org/packages/fec... Hope you no longer need to spend months figuring out what these estimators are and how to use them.

Dear hive mind. I'm starting a living document listing Trump actions that are (1) likely unconstitutional, (2) likely illegal, or (3) demonstrate abuse of power. Here's my list so far. If you see something missing, please DM or comment w/a link and I'll add it! docs.google.com/document/d/1...

The new White House has already deleted dozens of environmental justice websites and reports. Worry not, they’re all backed up on various independent university websites. eelp.law.harvard.edu/tracker-type... 🧪🌎

ERROR is our scientific bug-bounty program. We pay reviewers and authors of impactful published articles to do a deep dive on results, data, code, etc to check for errors. Our second report of 2025 (and my first acting as Recommender for the review) is out now!

Nuclear is a baseload technology: once installed, it must run continuously. As variable renewables increase, residual load declines. When residual load < nuclear capacity, nuclear is no longer profitable. For this reason, Spain will be shutting down nuclear progressively during the next decade.

Cheonggyecheon is proof that removing highways can make cities better. 20 years ago, Seoul replaced concrete with a stream, and the results are remarkable: cooler temperatures, cleaner air, and 12 million visitors annually. My latest for the Guardian: www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...

The Venn diagram overlap of Strange Maps and Energy Stuff is definitely one of my happy places. Not that reorganizing European borders according to the most suitable renewable energy in a place is a realistic vision, but fun to think about. #EnergySky #ClimateSky #GreenSky

Holy crappazola! Global battery storage capacity additions increased from less than 1 GW per year to more than 40 GW per year... in less than a decade. They *more than doubled* between 2022 and 2023 😯

Thank you @cwolfram.bsky.social for a fantastic presentation on CBAM in today's Virtual Seminar on Climate Economics. The slides and recording are here: www.frbsf.org/news-and-med... Also worth checking out this @rff.org policy brief: www.rff.org/publications...

Come study with me towards a PhD degree in political economy at the CEU, Vienna with good funding. dsps.ceu.edu/tracks/compa...

Peak-load pricing theory in the electricity market with only variable renewable supply and elastic demand in 4 situations of low/high demand/supply. Prices vary between 0 (P12) and very high (P21). Scarcity prices set the optimal capacity in the long-term given the WTP (demand). #EnergySky
