For 45 mins this morning, we lost the car keys & tried to use the spare set which set off the alarm waking up the entire street but after charging down the M20 at 90mph we made it to our crossing & after HOURS of driving, we are at our gorgeous home for the week at Dol-de-Bretagne. #cidre #brittany

Currently have a text conversation in French with my Airbnb host. Goodness knows what I’m saying.

Late afternoon meeting at the Royal Warrant Holders’ Association in Victoria about next issue of Royalty in Britain magazine then lugged about 12 books back to the London Library before heading home. The capital beautiful & balmy tonight.

Before…and after. I appear to have collected the wrong dog from the groomer this morning.

Driving to France on Friday and can I find my car’s log book? Can I hell. Too late to apply for another.

Dressing like a mad woman today. But I really do love my new t-shirt from Manchester Art Gallery & vintage 80s jacket, bought in an Oxfam in Manchester. #dressforjoy

I used to love the Roly-Polys when I was young. Now, after trying on a swimming cozzie in advance of our holiday in France, I realise with horror I have become one of them.

Watching #outrageous - been a long build up…supplied pics to this production months ago. Anyway, not one for Mitford fans. Mitford-by-numbers.The hair is all wrong for starters - too long (why can’t period dramas get this right?). But if you don’t know much about them, worth a watch I guess.

The wedding of Lady Violet Manners yesterday is all over (some) papers. Her sister Alice sat in front of us at Ascot on Wednesday & narrowly missed singeing the sleeve of my dress with her fag as she mwah-mwahed some friends. 🙄

When your cat's a master of disguise.

Despite being generally feisty Feargal is actually scared of German Shepherds. Just encountered one in #wansteadpark He ran from but it chased & attacked him. Fortunately Feargal’s squealing was because he got stuck in brambles trying to escape. Owner says dog had never done it before (yeh right).

Happy 24th birthday to my middle one, Monty. Jammy bugger with his midsummer, longest day of the year birthday.

Working Men's Club, Sunday morning, painting by Bill Hindmarsh (ex-miner, b.1942 in Durham). #NorthernArt

Been having a very nice email exchange with an author who is licensing a picture from us at work and anyway, he’s just told me his address and turns out he lives in my home town - Barnard Castle. For some reason this pleases me greatly.

Been a bit of a packed, frantic week what with early morning dog walks to beat the heat, a day at Ascot, in the office Mon & Thurs, dashes to Westfield, dreadful traffic trying to make clinic appointments on Tues. So I’m enjoying the peace & calm of working from home today with no other obligations.

Leaving the un-air conditioned Mary Evans office (sauna level heat) shortly to drive home in my un-air conditioned car (oven level heat). Nice knowing you folks.

Me at Ascot today, up in the grandstand for the afternoon’s races.

Morning! Am on the Elizabeth line in my Ascot finery and trying to be nonchalant.

Bloody hell. Scorchio!

Remember when everyone used to get a pedicure by allowing small fish to nibble your crusty feet. Do people still do that? (I never did…the thought repulsed me).

Recommendations for the best blister plasters please. This is an emergency. Penny-sized circle of raw skin on back of heel after wearing loafers without socks on Saturday. Very sore indeed & I’m at Ascot on Wednesday. 😬

Blaise Metreweli is an ace name for the first woman head of MI6.

Bravo this sign.

Daughter’s last GCSE exam this morning. Physics - which she is quietly confident about saying ‘because I understand it and other people don’t’ (how I spawned a child good at science I’ve no idea). Anyway, big relief. The whole thing has been very drawn out & fraught this time around.

Have come into work to a book left on my desk about the (New York) Hippodrome by a contributor who is also a friend. Lol-ing at the highly informative contents page.

After taking well over an hour to sew this silk rose and leaves on, I (literally) take my hat off to milliners everywhere.

@guardian wheeling out the same old pictures of the Mitfords in this piece because they’re tied to deals with Getty & Alamy. We have a really brilliant selection of pictures at Mary Evans. The Kardashians of history: why are we so obsessed with the Mitford sisters?

I’ve no idea what’s happening here but it’s made me cry happy tears. Also, love the guy at the back with what looks like a wedge of cheese on his head.

Absolutely love this picture, and what Colin says is so true about eras and fashion.

Currently on tube heading to VV Rouleaux to investigate embellishments for my hat for Ascot.

I have woken up feeling MILES better so we’ve decided to have my birthday today instead.

Well, that was my 54th birthday. Streaming cold & feeling dreadful all day. But I did get some nice presents including this abundant bunch of peonies and Sweet William from my friend over the road.

Happy Gotcha Day Feargal. I’m sorry I’ve been too ill to take you out. ☹️

Just having the worst week. Rabbit death = daughter distraught in midst of GCSEs. Stuck in traffic for hours Tuesday eve. Forgot to turn up for a lunch date y’day. Have a dreadful cold now and have just had to cancel a lovely event I was organising at Mary Evans because we’re apparently not insured

Yep. Beat me to it.

Just seen an email from someone saying they were sorry not to see me at lunch today. It was a kind invite to a very nice sounding Marylebone restaurant & I had COMPLETELY forgotten. As it is, not well enough to have gone but still - I’m mortified. I’ve written back offering profuse apologies. 😩😳😞

Was supposed to going to an English wine tasting this evening at Must wine bar in Wanstead which I was dreading as I have lurgy and feel rotten with a nasty sore throat. Was an early birthday present from my aunt. Hallelujah - it’s been cancelled & we can go another time and just drink the wine.
