I have a sort of loose arrangement with the allotment committee that I can have dandelions if I chop off their seed heads, ditto with flowering grasses. The grasses have been looking fabulous but I'm gradually chopping most down now. Not sure grass seeds would fly onto other plots but there we are!

“Unite believes that the planned changes in fact create greater injustice. The proposal to limit Personal Independence Payments (PIP) to new claimants will create a two-tier workforce and will create a massive barrier to work for newly disabled people” www.unitetheunion.org/news-events/...

“It’s a real insult to disabled people to say that they are “noises off.” These are real lives and we care for these precious lives and that’s why we will vote down this Bill” @rachaelmaskell.bsky.social 👏 I urge every Labour MP to watch this superb BBC News interview & vote down this Bill

On the constant look-out for children's books (ages four to twelve years) to pass on to children who have few, if any in their homes. If you have any children's books you can pass on, or if you know any people who are in this position, please do let me know.

My hands are too hot for knitting. The needles are squeaking.

Don't like to remove random plants unless completely necessary but goosegrass was bidding to envelope the apple tree so I sort of wound it in. 'This is easy 'weeding',' I thought. Until my arms and hands began to hurt. Hours later and they are still covered in bright red streaks and rashes.

Just learnt that Mr Trump is having the lawn dug up in the White House Rose Garden for it to be replaced with concrete and flag poles. I suppose I shouldn't mind as I don't live in America and it's not my garden but I find it oddly upsetting. It's an image of what's being done to the world.

Ever since I discovered a little red weevil in my greenhouse, I've been reluctant to chop its food source (Dock) down - and Ragwort is already welcome for the sake of its amazing colour and for Cinnabar moths and their caterpillars. It's hard to keep concentrating on the proper allotment tasks when there are cheerful companions to notice around the place. Seven Spot ladybirds are theoretically common but it's a while since I've seen one. Mostly I notice Harlequins.

Cinnabar caterpillars always seem exotic - and their first appearance of the year is always a special moment.

@sofaflyer.bsky.social Thanks ever so for your re-tweets, Mike.

Bird people - do you have colourful books you'd be willing to pass on to children aged six and ten who are finding it a struggle to read but who will be inspired to learn if they are given books about birds - their genuine interest . . . please!!!!

Camera advise please. My Canon G9X has broken. I need a new camera. More difficult than anticipated. I want a small camera that I can whip out the moment I see an insect or a leaf that I want to photograph. Want high quality including RAW. Have been recommended a Soni RX V. Can anyone comment?

@photography-aj.bsky.social Wondering if you might comment on these moths on my allotment. They look like Cinnabar Moths but their colouring is red and green. All the info. says Cinnabars should be red and black. Am I wrong in thinking these are Cinnabars or is something else going on do you think?

Descriptions of Cinnabar Moths say they are red and black but these moths on my allotment are definitely red and green. 15th June 2025

On Portland, the old limestone quarries are superb for insects and plants. But they are getting overgrown and losing interest. At Broadcroft it’s great to see some new scrapes that will restart the succession and hopefully save Silver-studded Blue from extinction @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Private Eye exposing again the utter idiocy of our politics. This sums up *exactly* how Farage and Reform get rocket-boosted by a media, drunk on sensationalist nonsense. Unserious and irresponsible but it’ll be up to us to prove them wrong.
