Golden State's 17-point loss is beside the point for a sellout opening-night crowd, but not for the head coach, who knows her team has work to do. Our @macsmith413.bsky.social has more from the historic night in San Francisco.

Valkyries announced a crowd of 18,064. A sellout.

A little emotional tonight watching #Valkyries debut. And amazed watching how much gear people are buying!!! The violet rules all! “We have the best gear in the W”, Kayla Thornton says.

An update on Savy King ❤️

A league source told the Chronicle that Sellers did not play in Friday’s intrasquad game and her health did not play in the decision to cut her. She passed her physical before the WNBA Draft.

HC Natalie Nakase on Sellers waiver. “Sellers was a joy…She picked up everything we asked her to. She did everything that we wanted her to. It's just that I have to choose the best 12 that are gonna fit. Doesn't mean it's the most talented. It means the best 12.” @wgoldenstate.bsky.social

The Valkyries waived Shyanne Sellers today, a shocking first training camp cut | @sfchronicle.com www.sfchronicle.com/sports/artic...

Only the criminals, they said..

Your 2025 Valkyries training camp roster. No surprises, Juste Jocyte not reporting. Will still be eligible after EuroBasket in June if she wants to sign.

Incredibly relieved to see confirmation that Kilmar is alive. Now we need to bring him home.

Dear Mr. Kennedy, I offer a rebuttal to your uniformed, gaslighting nonsense. The amazing Brian Maurer featured in the spring issue of SJSU's Washington Square Magazine talking about how he defines his success as a college student. I'm so proud of him. sjsu.foleon.com/washington-s...

On the latest episode of @lockedonwbb.bsky.social, @natalieheavren.bsky.social is joined by @macsmith413.bsky.social to discuss the details of the Valkyries' first draft: www.thenexthoops.com/features/loc...

Was Jocyte a surprise pick at No. 5? Not to the Valkyries. From @macsmith413.bsky.social www.thenexthoops.com/features/val...

Valkyries going deep on international flavor with Justé Jocyté , a 19-year-old from Lithuania, who has been playing professionally since she was 14 years old.

The next big step for the Golden State Valkyries to get closer to their WNBA debut comes tomorrow in their first WNBA Draft. @macsmith413.bsky.social breaks down what to expect from the "poised and ready" Valkyries. Story ⬇️

My live gamer from Tampa. Will be updated, of course.

You don’t get the emotions that we’ve all just seen from Geno and Paige if you’re a one year kid in the transfer portal. Just saying.

Fagbenle is officially in the fold for the Valkyries after the restricted free agent signed on Wednesday | @sfchronicle.com www.sfchronicle.com/sports/artic...

In a surprising turn of events, Tess Heal is entering the transfer portal after her one year at Stanford | @sfchronicle.com www.sfchronicle.com/sports/colle...

Jzaniya Harriel is in the portal for Stanford. She told the team she wouldn't be back after her redshirt senior season, so they already expected her to leave the team by season's end.

ESPN’s silence on Sedona Prince makes me uncomfortable.

Don’t underestimate what it means to have UCLA in the @ncaaw.bsky.social Final Four. Having the LA market be such a relevant place for women’s basketball is huge for the growth of the game. Congratulations to Cori Close and her squad.

Manifesting Kiki in a Valkyries uniform.

Nobody trying to hurt anyone. The booing is uncalled for.

Dammit.

As UCLA gets deeper into this tournament, they'll rely heavily on Timea Gardiner's skill, and her sense of calm. The latest, from @macsmith413.bsky.social: www.thenexthoops.com/ncaaw/gardin...

Today is a bad day.

@mingemi.bsky.social does it again, winning @usbwa.com's 2025 Rising Star award. "She is setting the standard for newspapers across the nation and what great things can happen when they embrace women's sports with the right person doing the work," @macsmith413.bsky.social says in the announcement.

Ted Lasso will return for a fourth season. Speaking on Jason and Travis Kelce’s podcast New Heights, Sudeikis explained his character would be coaching a women’s team in the new season. 🔗: www.nytimes.com/athletic/620...

Five years ago today, the NCAA Tournament was cancelled. Our @macsmith413.bsky.social caught up with Kelly Graves and an Oregon team that had a chance to win it all to reflect on what was lost #NCAAW www.thenexthoops.com/features/kel...

How are those retirement accounts doing today everybody? So. Much. Winning.

I should be getting ready to cover the Pac-12 Tournament championship game like I did every year for nearly 25 years. But I’m not.

Per @schatz.bsky.social: “The stock market is down but at least everything is more expensive and services are getting shittier. On the other hand we have more measles. To be fair, they are finally delivering the reductions in FAA and National Parks staff that people have been demanding.”

Stanford loses in the first round of the ACC tournament, and likely the Cardinal's 36-year NCAA Tournament run will come to an end.

As members of a one-bid league, the road is clear for Washington State and Oregon State. @macsmith413.bsky.social takes a look at each team's 2025 resume and what they need to do to win the WCC Tournament:

JUST IN: Sabrina Ionescu joins NWSL’s Bay FC as an Investor & Commercial Advisor.

Via ESPN Research: JuJu Watkins has scored 30 points in 4-straight games vs UCLA. That's tied for the 3rd-longest streak vs. a single opponent in DI since 1999-00. The only player with a longer streak in that span is Caitlin Clark (10-straight v Nebraska, 5-straight v Minnesota)

My town in Dublin CA showed up and stood up today against the possibility of an ICE detention center in our community. More of this.

That was quite a little play performed in the White House today.

For @msnbc.com, I reflected on what Diana Taurasi's career and competitiveness meant for women's pro basketball and for women everywhere. "Taurasi defied gender expectations and taught future women athletes and women in leadership to embrace their competitiveness and bold personalities."

Few things better in my sportswriting career than to say I got to shoot the shit with Diana Taurasi. One thing better though, getting to watch her play. May go to my grave thinking that the 2009 WNBA Finals with Taurasi and Catchings trading haymakers was the best basketball I’d ever seen.

Diana Taurasi tales: Untold stories about retired WNBA legend www.espn.com/wnba/story/_...

Make no mistake, I don’t want the story. I don’t do breaking news. But there are lots of people who cover the game regularly who do breaking news and they do it well.

Diana Taurasi. Thank you for the ride. It was amazing.

As per usual agents and players give their big announcements to outlets who don’t usually cover women’s basketball, in today’s case TIME and The View, relegating women’s basketball media to minor league status. It’s deeply frustrating.

@mingemi.bsky.social is proof positive on this:

Dear @ESPN. How many times do we have to go over this? Mike Montgomery is not the winningest coach in Stanford history. He is the winningest men’s basketball coach in Stanford history. It’s not “regular” basketball and women’s basketball.
