June is racing by! I was pleased to mark & celebrate World Refugee Week in different ways: with @dundee.ac.uk students & staff, refugees & asylum seekers, & more. In parliament I challenged Scot Gov on its record on funding arms companies & how it supports those in deep poverty. Here's a snapshot:

I used to watch soccer with my Dad in Zim, on the telly, usually after we knew the results of the game. But it is so much more than a beautiful game - read my reflections here: open.substack.com/pu...

Interested in free speech & the right to protest? Then come along on Monday to hear Haim Bresheeth (Jewish anti-Zionist activist, film-maker & son of Holocaust survivors) & others discuss genocide, free speech & protest activism: 23 June, 7.30pm, Quaker Meeting House, Aberdeen

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is not inevitable. War is not inevitable. Both are a consequence of political failure. Our governments are complicit in that failure. We must act. The Palestinian people deserve better!

The report out today about @dundee.ac.uk financial crisis is vindication for staff, students & campus unions who’ve been calling for transparency & culture change for months. Glad to have stood in #solidarity with them throughout - including on the picket line in February!

Diversity makes us stronger. Welcoming refugees makes us kinder. The world is a scary place - let's be proud that Scotland can offer people a safe haven and a new home. #WorldRefugeeDay

More shocking than what was already known. Misogyny, neglect of duty, the devastating effects on staff and students could have been avoided with better management. Dundee Uni needs fresh management.

About to learn details of the independent investigation into the University of Dundee's financial crisis. It's left staff & students completely lost at sea, their calls for transparency ignored. I'll be scrutinising senior UoD officials in Education Committee next week.

Poverty is not inevitable, but a consequence of political choices. A minimum income guarantee would be life-changing for many people. I hope the Scottish Government takes these @jrf-uk.bsky.social recommendations seriously: greens.scot/news/min...

Local authorities can't handle a national crisis. We need a national audit & funding to tackle RAAC, putting those affected at its heart. Until then, I'll keep bringing campaigners & ScotGov together to find solutions. 🏠

4.3 million children are in poverty UK govt won’t see progress on child poverty by 2029 even with high economic growth 📢 Our analysis shows under our central scenario only Scotland will see child poverty rates fall by 2029 in part due to social security policies 1/5

TW: harm to children. My research into the effects of the UK government puberty-blocker ban has finally been published after peer-review. It details the severe harm being caused to young trans people & children by the Starmer government's puberty-blocker ban. Unlike Cass it is peer reviewed...

Help is there for those struggling with gambling addiction. @citzrights.bsky.social and GamCare are running a webinar tomorrow at 5.30pm for people from migrant communities fighting addiction or gambling debt. Sign up linked below.

It's Refugee Week - our opportunity to stand firm with those who have made Scotland their home after fleeing persecution and danger. Scotland must be a welcoming country, offering sanctuary to those who need it. Our enemies don’t arrive in small boats! greens.scot/news/ref...

I'm standing for selection to be the @scottishgreens.org's lead candidate for the North East region in next year’s Holyrood elections. Here is my candidate statement: open.substack.com/pu...

I have again, written to Scot Govt about @dundee.ac.uk's ongoing crisis. Compulsory redundancies are still on the table despite the voluntary scheme in place. A £12million loan hasn't been accepted by Uni Court. And Fair Work principles definitely aren't being followed. My letter:

Last week, I was grateful to discuss how we build a better, more inclusive & peaceful world: in the Scottish Parliament, with @caatuk.bsky.social, & at Aberdeen Uni. Taxpayers' money should not fund genocide, survivors of abuse deserve justice, immigration is good, & equality benefits everyone!

Just one day left to respond to @abshirecouncil.bsky.social's consultation on sheltered housing. 17 complexes are proposed for closure, with limited alternatives available - in the midst of a housing emergency! This could devastate lives. Make your views known here: engage.aberdeenshire...

peter krykant meant a lot to those who work in homelessness as well as drug addiction itself - he will be sorely missed

There is no more room for denial - the UK Government, the Labour Party, is actively participating in genocide. @teamlabouruk.bsky.social

Thousands of young people in Aberdeen will receive free school meals because of the @scottishgreens.org budget asks 🎉🎉 When a quarter of Scotland's children live in poverty, policies like these make the difference between surviving & thriving in childhood.

The UK Gov sanctions two Israeli ministers...a week after announcing plans to make the UK a military-industrial machine. And Scotland still gives millions to arms companies. Hundreds of us came together & called on both governments to take action for Palestine, & for peace, at last week's rally.

BREAKING THIS MORNING📢 Aberdeen is one of eight council areas trialling free school meals for S1-S3 pupils, after the @scottishgreens.org won funding for this scheme in this year's ScotGov budget. Incredibly proud that Green policies are making a difference for families in the North East!

Over a fifth of people in the UK are providing unpaid care. And that's only going to increase - forced by brutal recent cuts to social services in Aberdeenshire & across Scotland. #CarersWeek recognises those so often left behind. More info for carers & about unpaid care 👇

Education, public services, sustainability, social justice and human rights - all important issues we know young people care about. @officialsyp.bsky.social wants your views on these topics and more as part of their manifesto. 👉 Tell SYP what you think by Thursday 12th: bit.ly/SYPManifesto26

RAAC campaigners need ScotGov to stand with them – and they must be included in any decisions made about their homes. Glad to host the Housing Minister in my Dundee office to speak with constituents affected by RAAC, & I'm sorry I couldn't be there myself. Engagement cannot end here.

All eyes on the Madleen - not because of celebrity presence, but because Israel is denying aid to people who will die without it. Surely we need no more evidence: this is a genocide.

Pride marches always bring a renewed hope & joy that we so need when hard-fought LGBTQIA+ rights are being rolled back. As well as marching at Aberdeen's Pride event, here's what I was up to last week ✊

We should celebrate trans lives, in their splendour and variety, as evidence of what human life can be, containing multitudes. I came to understand this so late and so slowly, perhaps because my own life as a cis, straight husband and father is so conventional. And I'm still learning it now.

🚨 Over the next 5 years, the Government will hand £70billion over to landlords...to cover shortfalls where people can't afford their rent. £70billion. Public money to private landlords. Renters priced out & out of pocket. We need homes for people, not profit. #RentControlsNow

Holy smokes! Our article is on the cover of The Lancet!!!!!!!!!! Nbd 💅

ANYONE who thinks ANY group should accept fewer human rights than everyone else is totally unfit to serve as an EHRC commissioner.

Disabled people are footing the bill once again, with cuts to their services being used as a sticky plaster over massive budget issues in Aberdeenshire. It's unfair - it's injustice. Austerity doesn't work. We need a fairer tax system to fund vital services across Scotland.

5 million vapes littered or discarded every week, spoiling our natural environment. But now Scotland is curbing this horrendous statistic. We need to remember huge wins like this on #WorldEnvironmentDay2025, when so much of our natural environment is mistreated & defaced.
