Reminder to register for this super cool @biogeography.bsky.social Funk lecture by @jacquelyngill.bsky.social next week!

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants. Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

For the first time in nearly 30 years, the EPA under Trump failed to release the U.S.’s annual greenhouse gas emissions report. So a nonprofit did it instead. Facts don’t disappear just because the government refuses to print them. Read their findings below ⬇️ www.cbsnews.com/news/greenho...

As the Trump administration fires government researchers, cancels scientific grants, and targets universities with funding freezes, scientists who might once have welcomed public attention for their work or spoken up on issues affecting their field are instead opting for silence. scim.ag/4jLxA9E

duh!

If you are a person who cares about the future of science in the US, please take actions this week to #SaveNSF. @asn-amnat.bsky.social @sse-evolution.bsky.social @systbiol.bsky.social are leading a week of action - here is a Media Support Tool from the societies docs.google.com/document/d/1... 🧪🧑‍🔬🧬🖥️🦑

🧪 What the f is going on with NSF right now??? 🚨🚨🚨 There's been so many NSF updates within the past 48 hours that it's hard to keep track. It feels like an onslaught. It *is* an onslaught. But it's still vital to remain focused, organized, and strategic. So here's my recap of past 48 hours...

NEW: Starting May 5, NSF will implement an across-the-board 15% indirect cost rate (mirroring policies at DOE, NIH) Also, NSF staff expect 341 additional terminations today, bringing the total number of terminations to ~1,380.

Our messages are not getting outside our bubbles. Been telling a US citizen about the assault on science and the NIH since January. Sent this article today. Response was "What is NSF?"

New study finds where birds are declining most. High trend resolution data reveals complexity of bird population changes. “This is the first time we’ve had fine-scale information on population changes across such broad spatial extents and across entire ranges of species,” said Dr. Amanda Rodewald.

Thanks, Jacquelyn! Yes, check out our new paper! We hope it will serve as an impetus to focus on understanding the processes shaping the assembly, maintenance, and spatiotemporal dynamics of RSPs.

*** Academic BFD alert *** We just published a new global bird phylogeny. It synthesizes the work of thousands of researchers before us, and it will grow and improve over time. @snacktavish.bsky.social @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Quick reminder! Funk lecture is tomorrow, and we will host Dr. Lydia Beaudrot.

The Senate Faculty Council at Ohio State have voted to join the Big Ten Mutual Defense Compact. 💪

ATTENTION: NSF GRANT RECIPIENTS We received a heads up from a trusted source that you should proactively download/print/screen shot any documentation on research.gov pertaining to your NSF awards, both those that are current and any that have closed in the last 5-6 years. 1/n

Poor guy. The strain of cruelly destroying dozens of important, life-saving agencies/programs that make our society healthier, smarter, and more resilient, with no clear legal authorization, no transparency, no attempt to understand what agencies do, and no justification must be a lot to bear.

The Trump Administration is stealing from us. NSF-funded research is for the public good by design. Our future scientific workforce. Our ability to use science to solve real-world problems. The joy and wonder we get from learning about our world. Science is for everyone, not just billionaires.

Check out @sciencecolin.bsky.social first PhD chapter in @ecol-evol.bsky.social on how LiDAR-derived habitat structure drives avian diversity. Congrats, Colin!

A reminder that @biogeography.bsky.social is hosting our monthly Funk lecture next week, and we will hear from Dr. Lydia Beaudrot! She'll talk about disassembly of mammalian communities! Sign up if you have not yet done so!

Statement from TIBS to our current, former, and future members

We call on all those who care about the future of education & democracy in the US to stand up now against these monstrous assaults on our core principles of freedom of speech, student & faculty safety, & free inquiry and thought. Now is the time. When we fight, we win. #defendhighered #academicsky

Racial affinity groups are under attack. Now is the time to redouble our commitments to these vital organizations that make science better for all. Proud to pen this letter with @khadlily.bsky.social and many @wocineeb.bsky.social colleagues www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Again, today would be an excellent day for Ivy League, Big Ten, & all the other chancellors & university presidents to start speaking loudly & collectively against the all-out existential crisis that this assault on US higher ed represents. The silence is deafening. bsky.app/profile/mcop...

1. For the past thirty years I've had the best job in the world.
I've had the opportunity to follow my curiosity; explore the workings of nature and society; mentor students and junior colleagues in the same process; and teach generations of students about it all.

I feel this so hard.

OSU banned departments from considering race in admissions two years ago -- we aren't allowed to know applicants' races, and diversity (of any kind) was removed from all rubrics. So to come after us now shows how useless & futile it is to comply.

New: A NOAA lab in Hawaii that is connected to the longest-running observation of global greenhouse gas concentrations is slated for closure in August, according to a list of lease terminations Democratic members of Congress shared with @washingtonpost.com.

"Much of the power of authoritarian regimes comes not from direct mandates — but by institutions and the people who control them sensing changes coming and abandoning freedoms without resistance."

NSF is a model federal agency and its program officers are what make it work. There is no sense to these firings except to degrade US scientific capacity.

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

Absolutely outrageous.

“Forums, trainings, media spots, Op-Eds and student-led actions: we helped to make Ohioans’ anger against the bill visible…you can’t read a single journalistic report about SB1 this morning which does not show the mass opposition…we have shown that Ohio will not go down without a fight.”

In a couple weeks, @biogeography.bsky.social is hosting yet another amazing speaker in the Funk seminar series: Dr. Sidney Gouveia. Join us!! Register online!

🚨Senate Bill 1 just passed the Ohio Senate by a vote of 21-11.

CFPB - closed USAID - closed Medicaid - under attack NIH cancer funding - frozen Department of Education - under attack But do you know who just got a NEW government contract for $38,858,978 literally today? SpaceX — owned by Elon Musk

"From Baylor to Florida State to Clemson to Ohio State, these are enormous places that will lose tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in research support under this move. Jobs will disappear, labs will close, trials will stop, drugs will go undiscovered, patients will die."

Happy International Day of Women in Science. The National Science Foundation’s list of flagged words includes both “Women” and “Female.”
