Integration is transmutation :)

"What am I going to do with a Bachelor's in Mathematics other than teach?", they wailed. Well, kids, let's now also add "become Pope" to the long list of things people do :D [ok, yes, Pope Leo XIV might have done a few things in the theological space, but, he holds a degree in math, too!]

There are two ways to think about optimization. 1. Start with your objective function to optimize and judge actions against that metric. OR 2. Look at an action and find objective functions that are optimized by said action If you can't explain behaviors with (1), you may want to look at (2).

i enjoyed seeing the various combinatorial identities to get us to 2025. i was curious if anyone decided to go insane and work off of atan(1) = pi/4. like here's a ridiculous joke. let atan be the arctangent function. introduce a typo and call it ajan. thus ajan(1)*180/pi = 45 😜

mathmisery.com/wp/2024/12/1... Math education for a lot of folks is a kind of torture. I get it. And the response to anything about math tends to be hostile and fearful. “I don’t want it near me. I hate it. It was a waste of time.” -- #mathsky #edusky #MTBoS

we're so close! AR = autoregressive ARCH = autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity GARCH = generalized ARCH IGARCH = integrated GARCH but we're losing focus people with FIGARCH! next has to be LIGARCH and then OLIGARCH, i mean 2025 is the year for it. #datascience #mathsky

Merry Christmas! #iykyk

I tried to start a business with a 49er, but things didn't pan out.

I knew better than to invest in a trigonometry startup. All the sines for failure were there. First they asked me to cosine a loan. Then they went on a tangent to build their CAST product. And finally, they came full circle and decided to go back to their roots and make pie.

what a great question on about pythagorean triples and pascal's triangle :) math.stackexchange.com/questions/49... #mtbos #iteachmath #math

i was heartened to get an email the other day from a teacher who has been using my cryptarithmetic puzzles in the classroom! mathmisery.com/wp/?s=crypta... #math #mtbos #iteachmath

A classic problem in #probability is to randomly cut a piece of string into N pieces, while making sure that on average the length of each cut is 1/N. The "random" part can be tricky from a math perspective, but also intuitively. On average, how large is the largest cut for, say, 20 pieces? #math 🧵

math riddle! Show how half of 8 is 3. Using the same process, show how half of 1 is 1 :)

every now and again a parent asks me about the rules for rounding. these questions are a consequence of an assignment their kid gets with answers that are dissonant from how the parent learned the rules. Ex: round 10.5 to the nearest 1. teacher says 10, parent scratches head and says 11 #mtbos 1/n

today is 4/2/24 a palindrome! cool thing about palindrome numbers with an even number of digits: they are divisible by 11 test it out with your students. palindrome WEEK is coming :) 4/20/24 to 4/29/24, of course, this is an odd number of digits #mathsky #edusky
