There are two ways to think about optimization. 1. Start with your objective function to optimize and judge actions against that metric. OR 2. Look at an action and find objective functions that are optimized by said action If you can't explain behaviors with (1), you may want to look at (2).

i enjoyed seeing the various combinatorial identities to get us to 2025. i was curious if anyone decided to go insane and work off of atan(1) = pi/4. like here's a ridiculous joke. let atan be the arctangent function. introduce a typo and call it ajan. thus ajan(1)*180/pi = 45 😜

I knew better than to invest in a trigonometry startup. All the sines for failure were there. First they asked me to cosine a loan. Then they went on a tangent to build their CAST product. And finally, they came full circle and decided to go back to their roots and make pie.

A classic problem in #probability is to randomly cut a piece of string into N pieces, while making sure that on average the length of each cut is 1/N. The "random" part can be tricky from a math perspective, but also intuitively. On average, how large is the largest cut for, say, 20 pieces? #math 🧵

every now and again a parent asks me about the rules for rounding. these questions are a consequence of an assignment their kid gets with answers that are dissonant from how the parent learned the rules. Ex: round 10.5 to the nearest 1. teacher says 10, parent scratches head and says 11 #mtbos 1/n
