“What AI is is an ideology—a system of ideas that has swept up not only the tech industry but huge parts of government on both sides of the aisle, a supermajority of everyone with assets in the millions and up, and a … growing sector of the journalism class.” aworkinglibrary.com/writing/tool...

When was the last time that you were pleasantly surprised by software? I was nearly finished reading a book when my library loan ended and my ereader auto-returned it. After waiting weeks, I was able to borrow the book again. And when I opened it, the ereader remembered my page. It just worked.

I'm halfway through this article & like (and agree with) the points made thus far. But I want to have an aside on how people uncritically use the term "foundation models" & "reasoning," when it is very likely that the models memorized all these benchmarks. 🧵 prospect.org/power/2025-0...

The first in @pepperraccoon.com's Par Avian series of enamel pins inspired by the birds of Aotearoa New Zealand have dropped and they're super-cute! pepperraccoon.com/collections/...

Pros and cons of using HTML data attributes to store web component state? I'm talking small, simple states (not serialized json or large objects). I kind of love declarative state that's visibly attached to the component.

Me: I'll never finish all of these small side projects Also me: maybe I should combine these countless small side projects into one huge side project, then I'll be able to focus Finally, me: this side project is too big

This is your periodic reminder to never take Kevin Roose seriously about anything again.

Hey fam, just a wee reminder that I'm an artist and I draw lots of nature-inspired cool stuff including apparel, bandanas, and stickers (and enamel pins!) over at pepperraccoon.com <3 would appreciate some folks checking out the store, it's been real sleepy!

Fast and Furious franchise centered around public transportation

This is an article that I've wanted to write for over a year, and I finally got the chance to do it! Atproto Ethos is a deep dive into how we think about protocol design - its influences, the core innovations, and the opinionated takes that we've adopted

✍️ New Article: First Look at The Modern attr() I explored the new attr() capabilities and shared my thoughts about it. Happy reading! ishadeed.com/article/mode...

Where is the best, clearest explainer of when to use aria properties? I like the MDN page because it begins with some forceful advice against using them. Anything better and more specific about common situations when they are needed and make sense? #a11y developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/W...

Let’s talk about placeholder, format indication and accessibility. Short and simple version: don't placeholders to communicate input format indication.

Here's the first of many smaller projects I plan to release this year: A custom reset style sheet that comes with a website that allows you to compare it with the default user agent styles and other reset style sheets. fokus.dev/tools/uaplus/

We’re introducing the kids to a wide variety of older popular music. And made the mistake of starting with Queen. 🤦 And now they’re ruined. Every band we show them, the younger one just side eyes, asks the name of singer, and then says “not as good as Freddie.” And he’s not wrong. #parenting

🔥🔥🔥 “If you personally work on developing LLMs et al, know this: I will never work with you again, and I will remember which side you picked when the bubble bursts.” drewdevault.com/2025/03/17/2...

"Please stop legitimizing LLMs or AI image generators or GitHub Copilot or any of this garbage. I am begging you to stop using them, stop talking about them, stop making new ones, just stop." drewdevault.com/2025/03/17/2...

In other totally real news, I’d like to announce that matthewhowell.net entered into talks to be acquired by reasonable.work in a deal valued, by me, at precisely 484 quadrillion double dollars, 200kg of Japanese sencha, and three bowls of oatmeal

looked up the clip just because sometimes people change his words for captions that end up innocently reshared, but upon finding it decided to share the video because hearing him say it makes it 1000% more definitely true and everyone will listen/believe more than reading it written out

Can we please skip ahead in the timeline to the part when they try this shit on Nintendo’s trademarks and copyrights and then get ground into fucking dust 🙏

I don’t think OpenAI thought through just how easily Studio Ghibli’s lawyers will be able to write the copyright and trademark claims of the inevitable lawsuit

Just stop posting the fake, disgusting ai Ghibli slop. Please. My block button is getting tired.

despite popularised beliefs, LLMs are not fit for medical applications. SoTA models produce "non-trivial levels of hallucinations" even w inference techniques like CoT & search augmented generation: arxiv.org/pdf/2503.05777 of surveyed clinicians, 53% use LLMs daily & 91% encountered hallucinations

The thing about a treadmill though is that it has an off button. Like, a physical off button, not a tailwind v1 button component from a deprecated UI framework. polotek.net/posts/the-fr...

And this is why giving your work to the bros will never work on your favor

What is something good that you have made in the last few days or weeks?

Normalize being thirsty for kindness, and inclusion, and empathy, and whatever good you want to see in the world. It’s fine. Drink the whole planet. Or: tryhards are cool if they’re trying hard with moral clarity.

Fun list of ideas for the personal website that you definitely all have. Right? jamesg.blog/2024/02/19/p...

Had some... well... thoughts on Donald Trump claiming that he's brought free speech back to the US government just hours after promising to imprison and deport protestors. www.techdirt.com/2025/03/05/t...

Wrote up something about Techdirt's recent coverage, and why (whether we like it or not) we need to be a "democracy blog" now, rather than just a "tech" blog (not that we've ever been just a tech blog). This story is *the* story and it impacts everything else. www.techdirt.com/2025/03/04/w...

So I decided that the format is actually just HTML and that HTML should have reference-style links like Markdown has. I made quick proposal: github.com/whatwg/html/...
